I just watched The Waters of Mars (again) before coming to this and the ending gives an additional perspective to this sequence of goodbyes including the Doctor acting to save them or boost them before saying goodbye. tWoM ending was a powerful moment for the Doctor. A viewer watching episodes as they were released with time and personal life gaps in between viewing loses some of that power. It is worth it to close this particular gap thanks to streaming.

I would say luke never actually met him face to face but I forgot the episode of Sarah Jane adventures, the wedding of Sarah Jane where his doctor ran in to save the day.

The way David says "I don't want to go." really hit me. I don't know if he meant that genuinely or if that was brilliant acting, but it goes to show that he is a great actor, and was a great incarnation of he Doctor.

Can we just appreciate this. At the book signing he asks her if she was happy in the end. She was the nurses great granddaughter and has never met the doctor before. For all she knows, it was just a story. But she just looks into her eyes and knows. Knows it’s him. A immortal Ailen from space but out of all the things she could have asked she just says “ were you?” His smile after is just devastating because after losing Rose for the final time when she gets to grow old with the human doctor and seeing the nurse get her happily ever after you can see his pain. He will never get that peace, never get the joy of growing old with someone. The joy and sorrow in his eyes is indescribable. I know we only saw her for two episodes but it shows us just how broken he really is, how desperate for love. It’s most heart wrenching goodbye and yet so beautifully simple. Thank you Russell and Steven for this beautifully written scene and brilliant acting from David.
