As a librarian, without a space due to a remodel and pushing into classes, I have been doing offline activities. It is actually refreshing to do read alouds and worksheets. We then have discussion on the activity and those are truly my best days. We have lost communication and writing skills due to our Covid year. My students need to be able to express themselves, that is essential for all learning. You keep being awesome in doing what you know is right for your students. By the way, I love all the books that you share. I have shared Salt in His Shoes and Can Man with my 3rd graders and in 5th they still talk about it. Truly it is those meaningful discussions that make my job rewarding for me and my students. It also builds relationships. Soon, I will be doing my book tasting activity, once I’m back in the library and I seriously cannot wait.

Thank you. As a parent I thought my children were using technology. That was one of the reasons why I pulled my children out of public school. Another reason why was that they took cursive out of the curriculum. I'm sorry but I think it's important to learn how to write in cursive. My children also liked text books. When my oldest was told she had to type a paper on her Chromebook, she came home, said she was not going back, she said she should have the choice to type it or write it, I'm not getting carpal tunnel syndrome in the sixth grade. Thank's for keep the Chromebooks to a minimum.

Preach, Fletcher! I agree 100% with everything you said. I teach 1st - 2nd grade combo class and my kids don't use technology in my classroom except for during testing. They get more screen time than is recommended or healthy for them as it is and I don’t want to add to that. I use technology to teach them, but I try to limit their screen time as much as possible. I absolutely love the points you made about boredom. We all need to be comfortable with boredom. It’s not a bad thing. Anyway, I’m just restating the things you said so well. I just want you to know that I wholeheartedly agree with your rant. Keep doing you! ❤

I work in a nice public school district, and I wish we used less technology. All the kids have Chromebooks, and they introduce so many problems. Sure, it's less paper being used, but it makes the kids want to constantly be in front of the screen. And for special needs kids (which includes kids who don't have a learning disability but have really huge behavioral issues), everything being on Chromebooks is so much more difficult for them.

"Offering all kids voice and choice." 😂😂😂😂😂 Yeah, see how that works for you. The kids would be running that classroom within 48 hours. Kids need structure and direction from an adult in the room, not voice and choice from a buddy.

Something that bothers me is the lack of general purpose computers Everything is a Chromebook or tablet I think classrooms should have at least a couple computers that allow more freedom and exploration of tech. Like a raspberry pi or similar

I 100% agree with you! I only let my students use technology for what I’m required for them to do. Other than that my students are reading, writing, or working.

I am a retired, substitute teacher, and I can guarantee that one of the main reasons I retired was because of tech in the classroom too much too much too much.

Amen. These kids can't read cursive or even count back change on their own when they start work in the service sector. You ask for help and they will tell you to goggle it. No communication skills because their faces have been fixated to a phone or Ipad.

As a veteran teacher of 26 years, I support and agree with everything you have said. You never have to apologize to people who are not in your classroom on a daily basis. You've established your routine based on what works for you. Not every classroom is one size fits all. Continue to do what you feel works for you and your students and take care.

Agreed. As a librarian also working on their masters, recently my professor shared that I don’t have to do the same lesson for both my grade level classes. Like you said every teacher style and classroom is different and I can adapt my lessons to work with what works with that group of students.

it’s snowing in Portsmouth, Va, so we have a two hour delay tomorrow lol. I sliced my pinky finger unpacking my Ninja Food Processor so I could make sausages balls. My last goal on my to do list for winter break. I had to go to the Emergency Room to get it glued shut and a tetanus shot. I came home and made those sausage balls. A great protein snack for lunches this week. All goals completed for winter break. Have a good week back!
