I just received my TruArc 15 brand new from Brunton, and setting the declination is a total PITA. What a horrid design. You should be ashamed. "Made in the USA" - perhaps made in Taiwan would be better.

I've been waiting years for this to become affordable, but I guess it never will. I bought a knockoff version made in China for $150 about four years ago and it hasn't let me down. I'd prefer to spend locally but I can't afford anything made in my own country.

This PIA method should be a relic of the past. I set mine several years ago, with difficulty. I tried, after reviewing this, to change it--way too hard. The tools work fine and doing it mentally works fine as well. What doesn't work is this grabbing the bottom of the capsule and risking damaging the rings. My Truarc makes me really appreciate my GI Cammenga lensatic, especially if it gets dark.

Hello thank you for this beautiful product, I just bought your AXIS. After opening the box I realized that all the black parts with graduation were stickers and one was glued with a different angle. A scratch appears on brand-new compas. I'm not confident about the sticker with the graduation on the long-way utilization of the unit. I work as an exploration geologist in Canada in rough conditions. I will return the product even the exceptional concept.

Got it, but I have to agree with a lot of the commenters here - this would be much easier if it came with a tool. A tip for those who are struggling with this, try using latex gloves so you have a bit of a grip.

The only thing to add would be how to adjust for magnetic declination if you don't have the ability to adjust the compass. The way that this is done is to orient the map, while offsetting for declination. It essentially turns your map from true to magnetic.

A new high definition video is a must Brunton team, specially with cumbersome scale of brunton truarc 15 its forward and reverse degrees are difficult to apprehend specially with other compass promoting there easy to use method. I really truely love brunton truarc series a through video is mandatory and the reincarnation of dvd video is a must in good video quality. Do it ! other compass are really pushing with tutorials. A Brunton way is mandatory an hour long video encompassing all. Love from Australia...you global needle really shines here....

The reason I don't like this compass is because of how symmetrical it is. And when stress or panic sets in. It's easy to doubt your self. Were you holding the compass right. Did you accidently have the compass backwards. Reading of the south end instead.

I love the phrase, "Stay found." IMHO, that is the gist of orienteering. If you are paying attention to your surroundings, using a topo map and compass when appropriate, you will stay found! Hence, you will not get lost!

The Compass is great but the price puts it out of reason for most of us. I purchased a brand new Transit, Tripod, and meter Rod for less than the price of this compass. Run a sale or something the price is embarrassingly high $779.99 to $315.99 on Ebay is just outrageous. My better haft would go ballistic if I told her I paid that much for a compass.

This is the most polished, smooth and clearest explanation of a Brunton Transit ever made. Very logically organized. This Axis Transit Compass is very versatile. It's also a bit of a work of art.

Mine is stuck and only moves between 8 degrees east and 10 degrees west. Is that by design? The markings go all the way to 90 on each side. I'm trying to set for 13 degrees east but it won't turn further than 8.

the vial (the center part with the needle) might have a little nub left over from manufacturing. If you take the vial totally out of the housing, the outer perimeter of the vial should be smooth. There might be a little tab left over - say near the east part of the vial. Take a xacto or similar blade and shave a little off the housing until its smooth. that little tab can get caught on some of the protruding parts of the declination ring. The reason I know this is because Brunton sent me a new vial - my original one had a bubble in it. The new vial had the full tab still on it and I had to cut it off for the vial to fit in the housing.

0:29 he says it "has a liquid-free dial." I don't see how this can be true. I also noticed in the declination markings that on one set on the east declination side, the markings have been marked wrong (3 marks in between the long ones on one measure, and then 5 in between the next. See picture www.brunton.com/collections/outdoor-compasses/products/truarc-3?variant=907594737). Has this been fixed?

Hey, Brunton; thanks for nothing. This vid has no useful information, It's just an ad. Your instruction sheet doesn't even show the Mod 20. That's piss-poor for your top of the line unit. I'm no dummy, but it didn't make much sense to me... Guess I'll just have to use the compass, and sink or swim. (P.S. I also have a Mod 15. I can use that one fine... Oh. And a GEO, which I ALSO understand better than the 20. I think you're missing the boat, here!)
