Can a lot of wind "ground the fleet"??? In the sense it would be difficult to land and take-off .????
@markwest4996
@markwest4996 4 ай бұрын
A carrier will turn into the wind for take offs and landings. They want 30 knots over the bow. If there is no wind, it can make it's own. It'll easily go 30+ knots.

Not very glamorous, but think about the strength of the nose gear assembly. They lock it into the catapult and pull the jet from 0 to about 150 mph in 300 feet in just a few seconds.

If you want to take some video, try to find a handheld gimble. It'll hold your phone horizontal and stable. You can also just hold it up above everyone's head and aim towards the action. That's how I did it. I was a carrier sailor myself. The day back at sea was something I'll never forget.

I'd think it was less about security and more about covid. The Roosevelt was the carrier that made the news big time for pulling into Vietnam as the pandemic started. There were warnings against going. Almost 2 weeks after leaving, the CO had thought they'd gotten lucky and didn't have any cases... but then it started spreading through the crew. The CO lost his job for spreading a letter to the media try8ng to protect his crew by quarantining in Guam. My friend on the TR was lucky and didn't get it then.

The "BIG STICK" TR would be proud to see this ship with his name on it. The real danger zone is the flight deck itself. Truly the most dangerous place/job in the world. FLY NAVY!!!

I happened to be visiting the USS Midway the morning Capt. Crozier was having his retirement ceremony. It's sad that standing up for his crew put a hault to his advancement. Imagine being Capt. Sardiello who finished his tour as CO and was called back to replace Crozier in the middle of covid.

@@markwest4996 I always kind of compared Capt Crozier's situation to that of Capt McVay of the USS Indianapolis. All of the crew that survived from Indianapolis went to bat for Capt Mc Vay at his trial, yet they still convicted him. Years later he was acquitted but it was too late as he had committed suicide. My first carrier was the Connie. We did a dependence day cruise. Put on a little air show for the families. An F-4 was going to do a high speed fly by at flight deck level. Aircraft was about 500 feet off the port side at flight deck level. When they throttled up for the fly by the aircraft exploded and fell into the sea in 2 pieces. Aircrews family was on the flight deck watching. We lost TEN guys on that deployment. Lost one to a drug overdose in Hong Kong, one to heart attack at age 22 and one to alcohol poisoning. The rest were NORMAL flight deck/naval aviation operations. Flight deck is not a very safe place to work.
@markwest4996

F-4 was a long time ago! I did 3 deployments on the Forrestal. Lost 1 F-14 when pilot blacked out & RIO had to eject them. No flight deck deaths, but Sure- plenty of injuries. You're right about the dangers. I'd absolutely go again. I'd guess the others would too. :-) I always say California highways are more dangerous.
