Good job Wes. Ive been a fan since the early seventies and I am guilty for losing touch after Secret Treaties because I thought the departure of style was extreme. I now too love Spectres, Fire, Symbol Remains, etc. You nailed it but my only issue is Agents of Fortune is not their second best. Good job.

Being British we have a different and nostalgic love of Whitesnake than Americans. Here’s my ranking from worst to first not including the Purple album. 12. Flesh and Blood 11. Good to be Bad 10. Forevermore 9. Restless Heart 8. 1987 7. Slip of the Tongue 6. Slide it In 5. Trouble 4. Lovehunter 3. Come an Get It 2. Saints an Sinners 1. Ready an Willing. Early Blues Rock Whitesnake with Bernie Marsden, Mickey Moody, Neil Murray and Jon Lord was by FAR the best incarnation. Paice and Powell on Drums were pretty damn good too.

nice review, thanks for the opinions. I like the more metal sounding Aerosmith albums with Steve Tyler belting out yak-yak-yeows (as opposed to the soulful tender sweet corn syrup high notes that I can't stand to hear). For guitars I definitely prefer the Black Sabbath metal guitar sounds, that sound like the guitars are plugged into a million watts and recorded from an arena that seats 10,000. That's the Classics Live and Classics Live II metal sound. I do appreciate all genres of music including soul, but I like to hear a real soul queen like Aretha Franklin singing them rather than Steven Tyler. And, I like the more metal lyrics rather than the adult-contempory lyrics (boy can't live without girl a moment longer songs). So, given all that, here's my favorite Aerosmith Albums... 1 [A++] PERMANENT VACATION (1987) -- Fast metal guitars and high energy across the whole album. Steve Tyler sings way cool and macho, his most yak-yak-yeow metal screaming album of all. Backbone tracks are opener Hearts Done Time, Magic Touch, Simoriah and The Movie, all metal, all great. drapped around those tracks are high energy heavy blues and fast rockers, including several hit singles. This was the album that started my music collection with 80s metal bands. 2 [A+] DRAW THE LINE (1977) -- although 10 years before GnR's APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION, I hear this as a prequel to that style of music: hard, fast, in your face grit and bad boy lyrics . The production focuses on fast and gritty guitars, just like GnR's classic. It's not as fast as Aerosmith's ROCKS ('76) but it seems heavier because there's no sweet ballad at the end, and the production seems more honest for a hard rock album in that the grit shines through, and guitars especially. And, Steve Tyler is truly at the top of his hard rock image here. 3 [A+] ROCKS (1976) -- this is actually the album that GnR's Slash said inspired him. Every track is perfectly recorded and all the instruments are in full balance. This is a 70s metal masterpiece, complete with Steve Tyler screaming out that he's Back In Saddle for the album opener. The reason I rank it below next years album is the production. Although perfect, it has no personality or instrumental focus. It's so perfect, in fact, that it sounds like a Hollywood soundtrack, every track polished to a shine. It does have the tender sweet ballad at the tale end, where they draw the line at all the hard rockin' to cut the edge off. 4 [A+] TOYS IN THE ATTIC (1975) -- Masterpiece of song execution start to finish, including the orchestra on the final ballad, and the blues remake tune. Such a variety of tunes from 70s metal to Rolling Stones style rockers amped up just a little bit. I place it here because of the eclectic variety of tunes bunched together, and as a whole album listener, I enjoy sticking to one genre the whole album, or at least for a good long while, rather than the song writers playing hop scotch with my ears and mood. 5 [A] DONE WITH MIRRORS (1985) -- Aerosmith's most macho sounding album, and most even sounding album start to finish, and their most live sounding album. It's not the heaviest, or fastest or catchiest, but sounds like the most honest of a production of their entire catalog in that there are zero producer enhancement tricks to make something "catchy" for the radio: zero choruses, zero horn sections, zero organs or pianos or zero producer sound affects. This is the one album where the band, and the band along, lets the music do the talking start to finish, and all macho rock, zero sweet soul songs about a boy's lost affection from a girl 6 [A] ROCK IN A HARD PLACE (1982) -- Aerosmith introduces their electrified 80s sounding metal guitars. The rhythms are awesome and beats are fast, among their fastest albums overall. Lightning Strikes, Bolivian Ragamuffin, title track, Bitches Brew and Jailbait are bad to the bone, heavy and energetic. Cry Me a River is among Steven Tyler's best soulful sweet vocals, and whereas I love to hear him sing so sweetly here, I can't take that same effort from the ballads on later albums. This album saved Aerosmith with Joe Perry and Brad Whitford abandoned the band. 7 [A] GET YOUR WINGS (1974) -- a 70s rockin' masterpiece with an ole style highly electrified 70s sound on each track. Love the guitar sound even more than Toys or Rocks, the producer really got it right and nailed the balance. This is their most Led Zepplin sounding album, really guitar oriented. Steve Tyler sounds great too.

Overnight Sensation is really good. I definitely wouldn’t rank that one last, not even close actually, but each to their own. Other than that the rest of your ranking seems pretty close to mine other than 1916 which I’d also rank a lot higher, maybe even number 1.

Great going, Wes!.....interesting input! Been a Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship fan since early 1978, just before the 'Earth' album was unveiled to the public. I'd have to say that 'Spitfire' is my favorite of all the JS studio albums. It seems more in line w/the Airplane. It's great seeing a younger generation enjoying their music! To me, the Jefferson Starship was to the mid-to-late 70's, what the Airplane was to the mid-to-late 60's. Both bands held a mirror up to the world, showing what each era was reflecting upon itself. The Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship has always been my favorite musical force. Thank you for posting this, Wes. Go ride the music!! Peace.

VH III is 12, ADKOT is 11, OU812 is 10 (very poorly produced), Fair Warning is 9, Diver Down is 8, Balance is 7 (underrated album but needs to have the song Crossing Over which is the extra song on the Japanese album version. Fantastic song!), WACF is 6 (And the cradle will rock was the first song I had ever heard by VH and I couldn’t get over the beginning of the song. Phenomenal!, 5150 is 5 (Love Walks and Dreams are masterpieces), VH II is 4, 1984 is 3, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge is 2 ( The Dream is Over is the best song on this album), VH 1 saved rock n roll and started the Rock hair bands in the 80’s. All of Van Halen albums being ranked are completely subjective because they all are incredible minus VH III. My list with this band changes all of the time. After Sammy left the band suffered immensely. Great list!

I think when a decade ends a band or tv show isn't the same. if you ask card collectors which cards do you like better say Ryan's from the 70's or 80's most people will say 70's same with Schmidt. So I understand what your saying about in through the out door. Led Zeppelin 1 is far better than no.6 I understand it's your list but I would put 1 in front of 3 just saying? I would Zeppelin 2 is in there top 5? this is how I would rank them 8. in through the out door 7. Presence 6.. 3 5.. Houses of the holy 4. Physical Graffitti 3. 2 2. 1 1. Zoso the top 4 can be changed around. this is how I would rank them if I had to. nice list though.

Jimi Hendrix are you experinced Kiss - self titled Black Sabbath - self titled Def Leppard - On through the Night Van Halen -1? ranking only the important albums 11. Get a grip 10.. Pump 9.
