In the mid 70s as a kid , Ron Funk took me skiing at Sun Valley. Have pictures with him and his van. My mom went up the lift to watch me race NASTAR and she was too scared to ski down so she went down the mountain on Ron's back. People were shouting his name as they went down the hill. Legend.

I was one back in the day....a ski bum. I was from Chicago and "bummed" in Jackson Hole two seasons (1971-1972). It was interesting. Problem was I was 19 and thought there'd be girls everywhere. Jackson back then was virtually unknown. It was a big, badass mountain so there were few tourists and even fewer GIRLS. We did Ok tho, and used to run down to Alta and Park City from time to time for more action. I lived in the attic of a lodge at the base of the tram (5:55 The Alpenhof to the right of tram bldg) ....$30.month. No windows. Just a bed and bathroom. Cool to see here the Sojourner which is now the 4 Seasons). Spent my nights at the Moose, or more often the Stagecoach in Wilson. Good times. Ski bums are POOR tho. No money.

We lived in JH for >15 years as well from the late 80's to late 00's - right around the corner from the Stagecoach for 5 years, and out in Teton Village for 10. And bartended at the bar in the basement of the 7 levels - formerly the Bearclaw, then the Village Café. You guys had it made in the 70's, all that powder and nobody except the locals knew how to ski it. Cash poor, lifestyle rich! "My life is better than your vacation" is a popular bumper sticker in JH to this day.

@@jackshaw2512 Yeah I played in a broomball league right at 7 Levels (broomball had never been heard of back then) with all the locals in the Village. After games we'd drop down into the bar at the 7 Levels. It was really great being able to ski every day. Not much grooming back then, and the Hobacks were open a LOT ! Only lifts back then were Tram and Thunder chair (which was brand spanking new). On Apres Vous were 2 chairs. For those that cannot picture it....the only lodges back then were (starting left to right as viewed from entrance)..... The Holton Inn, The Hostel, The 7 Levels, The Alpenhoff, and the Sojourner. There were two small condo buildings over behind the Holton. The Mangy Moose was there, and a gas station and post office bldg. That's it.

@@rds990 I dropped out of music school, (classical / Jazz guitar) in 1980 to teach skiing for a year. Never wanting a music career I was recruited to play bass for the ski school band we called "freebeer" because we played mostly for free beer and didn't rehearse because people always showed up giving us free beer... it was a good plan... I wrote some songs we played them at a wet T-shirt contest at the Kandabeer ski/ beer chugging race for Schnee Voguli. Many bands and beers have highlighted my ski bumming career of 40+ years. I played my bosses wedding at Mt Hood and many weddings at 11.000 ft at Mammoth.

Consider that by their perception their equipment is modern and the technique is new. No groomers... just natural mountain conditions. contrast with now and our excuses must improve and we must make it less fun.

Bob Smith wearing his new no-fog goggles and a puffy orange down coat that looks like it coulda been made from a Frostline kit. Honestly, I never did have a pair of Smith goggles that really stayed fog-free.

I remember when I was a chef for Theo in Valdez......The John Byrne group would show up and it was always the funnest week ever. Byrne took us skiing all the time. He is a very generous man. However......Richie Eidem would show up. He had would bring this 1970's ski instructor jacket. The name on the jacket was Ron Funk. It was always just so funny.

I am sorry to report... Ron passed a few weeks back. The U.S. Consulate in Bangkok has no info on him other that what was on passport, so they are holding the body until they can find a next of kin. So, if any of you out there, have any family/history info on him...? Or know of any other friends who might... Please contact American Citizen Services at the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand.
