The trick is to turn the handle side facing the ground when you casting and control the spool with your thumb. If you have an overwind the line will spin off the reel easier than getting bunched up with the handle. When starting off you have to cast gently untill you have the confidence.

I would like to buy a reel for shore jigging style. Currently the Penn Authority 4500, Van Staal VR 150 and Twinpower SW 6000 is at the same price range. Which of these reel would be better option to buy and which of these would handle bigger fish ? Thanks a lot

Nice catch, kwelera is a good spot when the west blows as its sheltered, We put kites up there too which works very well with big baits about 300m out for non-eds. Maybe you guys should try kiting out some baits on your heaviest set-ups when the west comes through. super fun and almost guaranteed to get a decent pull if the swell and baro are right. Cheers
@untraceablefishing23 сағат бұрын
You know we’ve been thinking of adding a kite for some serious baits hey… I think it’s very necessary to get baits out further. Will invest in one soon soon!
@matthewlukeschrier9 сағат бұрын
@@untraceablefishing You get 2x different kites, the square kite and the delta or triangle design. Both have pros and cons but the delta is much easier to fly and tack, also launching it is much easier as you don't need a long tail as you do with the square kites. I prefer to fly the kite with a short boat rod and a decent sized KP reel. I use 100lb braid to fly the kite. Although 80lb will probably work best but i went on the heavy side for ruggedness, birds tend to fly into the line more so i find if it's a green color than yellow so try stick with a yellow braid. Then you need a kite clip, I use the aftco clips, they are pricey but effective although there are cheaper ones around or you can make a diy clip or use cotton(old school). Kite fishing ideally needs to be done with 2 people. Cheers

Hi there I'm currently 69 years old and got my first penn 285 delmar at the age of 12 , used this reel for about 15 years and in the latter years I used to cast a 4 once sinker 120 meters with a 12 foof blue marlin rod 20lb maxima marine green what a combination

Crazy to think how long the older stuff lasted… almost bulletproof reels that stood the test of time and held up through so much punishment!
@tonykruger8712 күн бұрын
In the Transkei early eighties the mob slowly started to switch from Penn to mainly to the Daiwa 50H as they could cast a bit further than the Penns . It too was bullet proof with a higher rate of retrieve
@untraceablefishing2 күн бұрын
Heard some really good things about the Daiwa 50H. But what we can say is they don’t make things like they used to… modern reels can’t put up with the abuse these vintage models did.
@johnbarnes45402 күн бұрын
Wow. Brings back lots of memories. First Penn was an 85 which I got at the age of 10 after cutting my teeth on a centre pin reel for 4 years. Then "inherited" at the age of 12 when my dad died a Penn 66, Penn 67 and a Penn 49. They stood in the cupboard until I was 19 and bought my first car - a Ford Anglia. Until then had nobody to take me fishing. I used them all from then on for about 12 years but the 67 seemed to be my go to reel. Caught lots of fish of various species. Kob, shad, steenbras, galjoen, black tail blue ray, sand shark, a few smallish bronzies. Chased mostly edibles and lots of blaasoppies and barbel. Then sold them all and bought a Penn 500. Later acqired another 500 from a guy desparate for money. Fantastic old reels. You could treat them with utter disrespect and they just kept going. At about 40 I bought my first "modern" multiplier. Shimano. Still kept the penns until I came to east london in 2016. Gave away all my stuff when I left Cape Town and bought new here in E. L

Very nice content guys. I have a Tackle Tuesday suggestion. How about doing a clip on fishing gear for retired guys. We have money to spend and need to buy good kit to last for 5 to 10 years. We suffer from sport, etc injuries so an easy casting rod with good quality grinder is essential. We're not interested in fighting big sharks for hours, so mainly edibles. Maybe a budget set-up, but also higher end stuff like Assassin, Hearty Rise and Berkley

In the early eighties off the Transkei coast the most commonly used bait for blacks was small Venus Ear ( perlemon ) which were could still be found in abundance . They blacks were not difficult to find . The unwritten rule was once you had caught and released two from the same spot , you moved on .
@untraceablefishing3 күн бұрын
So basically what we call “siffies” which can still be found, but obviously not legal to use and fish with. But I’ve heard it’s a deadly bait. For now we stick with saddleback and octopus to catch blacks and silvers🎣

I have the Battle IV 6000 DX, excellent surf reel and a super bargain; have used it from Narragansett to Montauk to Cape Hatteras. Only drawback is the auto bail but this can be converted to manual bail by removing part # 1E. Penns are very simple and very easy to service and maintain. All parts are easily and readily available, at least here in the US.

Here's a few fact correction points that need to be addressed: - Bearings from the Penn Pursuit IV and above are sealed stainless steel bearings. Sealed bearings better protect the bearing from water intrusion, these bearing will last longer than a standard shielded bearing. - The rotor on the Penn Battle III is plastic. - The Penn Battle III has an aluminum main gear up until the 5000 size, 6000 and above comes with a brass main gear. The DX model of the Penn Battle III comes with a brass main gear throughout the range. Brass gears will last longer than aluminum. - The new Penn Battle IV will be coming with physical seals around the main shaft, dust cap cover and handle entry point. - Penn Slammer IV DX comes with a stainless steel main gear, which is the best main gear you can buy in a spinning reel. With spinning reels, the best gears are stainless steel and brass. Aluminum and zinc gears wear down faster, leaving your reel feeling rough after a while. Stainless steel and brass gears maintain their smoothness for longer, they will also wear better and become smoother the more you use it.
