The fact is that no matter how much these new taxes will hurt the rich, it will be absolutely devastating to the poor, as they will see a sharp rise in the cost of living, while their wages will stagnate or decline. Plus, the more money the government takes from the system, the less money there is to grow the economy. Governments are inherently users, not producers.
