I’m elderly. I can remember my dad used to pick me up when I was crying because I was too tired, aged 3 or 4! He used to walk about with me in his arms and sing this to me and I went off to sleep in his arms. I will never forget the comfort of daddy. He calmed this baby down. It’s the best of memories. He used to pace about singing this slower and softly with me draped and held over his shoulders. It’s lovely to hear this. I LOVE the image too on the KZbin video, it is how I picture my grandmother’s life in Kinlochbervie until (as dad used to tell us) she left there for Glasgow with her new husband, who came from MacDuff. They stayed in a single-end. They had 10 children - some sadness there too. She was deeply religious, made soup for neighbours, worked in the big (tobacco lords, etc I guess) houses for extra cash to feed her family. She could speak fluent Gaelic. I was named after her.

My family were New Englanders brought to Nova Scotia after the expulsion of the Acadians. My Great-Great-Great Grandfather was born in Sackville, New Brunswick in 1791, but the family moved to New York in 1794 and never returned. I lived 4-1/2 years of my first 5 years in Newfoundland, but also have never been back.

Heard this for the first time, live, just now at the Belfast Tradfest (Cherish the Ladies). It was even better live. Music to make you weep (good tears).
