Thanks for doing this video. I am amazed by the 3 malls. They are only a stone's throw from Airside Mall. I am also very surprised to see no Christmas decorations inside the 3 malls. This is so un-Hong Kong! I once heard from older Hong Kongers that Kai Tak 啟德used to be known as 蒲崗。After the Kai Tak airport came into being, the old 蒲崗 was renamed 新蒲江崗。
@tranquilityonthemove11 күн бұрын
The malls were just opened like a few days ago. I guess they didn't have time for Christmas decorations. I'm also surprised how come they have 3 not-so-sporty malls here while we already have Airside and SOGO in the area. There are way too many malls in HK. I just looked up San Po Kong's history. Looks like you are right. zh.wikipedia.org/zh-hk/%E8%92%B2%E5%B4%97

16:07 APM Mall. I believe the APM mall is now the centre of gravity of Kwun Tong. You wrote Kwun Tong as 觀塘,I used to remember the name as 官塘. At 15:42, the building in front of you is named 官塘工業中心。 Was there a name change?
@tranquilityonthemove19 күн бұрын
I personally think that the blocks of industrial buildings around APM are the centre of gravity. I know it used to be called 官塘, but now we mostly refer to it as 觀塘. Even the MTR station is called 觀塘站. According to wiki, seems the change was due to people not liking the 官 word.

Thanks for showing/touring Ap Lei Chau. I have never set foot there. If I am not mistaken, it used to be called Aberdeen Island. In Vancouver (Canada), there is a shopping mall named after this island, called Aberdeen Centre. That mall caters mainly to Cantonese-speaking local residents. I am positively surprised by the many high-rise residential buildings in the video. All these buildings on a "small" island. The Wind Tower Park offers a nice and tranquil view of the Aberdeen Harbour. South Horizons Park/Promenade has a very nice boardwalk.
@tranquilityonthemove27 күн бұрын
It indeed is also called Aberdeen Island. I had no idea it's also called that as most of the time we address it by its Chinese name. It's so nice to know that there's a mall in Vancouver named after a place in Hong Kong. The Cantonese-speaking community there must be very large :D

25:23 Two major buildings have disappeared from the left: Peel Engineering Laboratory, and Ho Tung Building (Not Lady Ho Tung Hall). Both buildings (used to) belong to Mechanical Engineering. The drafting room inside Peel Lab was the place most students spent their time on their assignments, until the Haking Wong building was finished in 1984. The Ho Tung building used to house different diesel and petrol engines. 26:35 The flyover is new. It wasn't there when I was a student (1981-1984). 40:20 Gorgeous view of the Admiralty Station

Thanks for your sharing. Visited HKG and temple st market for the first time since 2006. We had young children with us and was disappointed to see the high number of street workers. Have they been moved?
@tranquilityonthemoveАй бұрын
I think they are still active in the area, though I have no idea whether they are getting more or less. But the neighborhood is kinda well known for them. Sorry it brought your some bad memories. There are many more places in Hong Kong that are worth visiting :)

Thank you for this video. The last time I set foot in Kowloon North was more than 30 years ago. I can recognize some areas, and was particularly surprised by how Baptist University looks now, compared to the old Baptist College in the 70s and 80s.

Thank you! The Jordan bus terminal, if memory serves, used to be the Jordan Ferry Terminal. Never knew there is a bus route to go from Jordan to Sha Tin. The ride definitely is much more enjoyable than a MTR ride.

Thanks. This Jordan terminal is a newly built one, though it's very near to the former Jordan Ferry Terminal. I think the old one lies south to 八文樓? This one is to the west of it.

32:46 My alma mater! This view used to be a football field in the 70s. 36:13/1:19:30 Maryknoll Convent School (aka MSC) is still there and looks exactly like how it used to look back then. 36:27/1:17:40 St Teresa's Church on the right/directly in front is now surrounded by high-rise buildings. 41:33 If memory serves, I think the old Waterloo Road Public Library used to be located around here (on the left), together with Alliance Francaise de HK. 1:23:25 La Salle Primary School (on the left) looks so beautiful!!! 1:23:50 La Salle College (aka LSC) on the right.

Townplace looks beautiful! Very unlike the 長沙灣 that I had in my old mind.
@tranquilityonthemove3 ай бұрын
It's actually quite far away from central Cheung Sha Wan and very near to the Stonecutters Island. And Townplace is a newly built hotel by SHK. It also "revitalised" the promenade. That's why it looks good. (FYI, The location on map: maps.app.goo.gl/j1KJGzhLvRsCgZnUA)

Right, not everyone can read hiragana and it's really crappy when you don't give clear indications for the location. I notice this trend a lot with Japan related "influencers", it's like they don't really want you to know about the location... only they should know it. Anyway, for those who can't read the name at 3:10, the bridge is Funado(Funato in maps) bridge over Shingashi river. Here's the Google maps location maps.app.goo.gl/9nKNCZEjtp68CMDD7, go enjoy live if you can.

Interesting sight. Camera running at 60hz rather than 50hz for Japan. Reason for the flickering lights I believe.
@tranquilityonthemove4 ай бұрын
Thanks and yes, I made this mistake the whole trip, wrongly thinking that it's 60Hz for Japan, while it's actually 60hz for West Japan and 50hz for East Japan :(
