My late close friend ( Dave M.) and I drove down Ten Mile Road from Southfield H.S. (Class of 71) and pulled into the WXYZ studios. Arthur “Worked” behind the studios in the WRIF trailer. Not very fancy and zero security. The three of us partied together like old friends (even though Dave and I were only 18 and soon to visit Vietnam just like Arthur did years earlier).

Detroit radio from the late 1960's through 1995 or so was legendary and epic. When the DJ was allowed to make their own playlist. It allowed the listener to have a favorite DJ, from the music he played. I really miss those days.

Steve was Howard Stern BEFORE Howard Stern. His era in Detroit, especially with George Baier, was groundbreaking for the late 70's. He is a legend for "Kid in the Crawl" alone.

I was a Sophomore in HS living just west of the city in 1984 and it was WMET and The Loop growing up. Listening to this I never heard the Dio Budweiser commercial and wonder if it was really Ronnie. Ratt with Bon Jovi wasnt my thing back then as I was already seeing Iron Maiden live. This really brought me back, thank you!

This video was too long. Halfway through it, I got hungry so I left it playing and went to the kitchen to fix myself a sandwich. But then I found out that I'm out of mayonnaise so I went to a store. There, I saw the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my whole life. But I'm a really shy person so I took up a three-year personality development course so I could introduce myself. She was very friendly and all, but unfortunately, she had a boyfriend. So I said, all good, I'm a mature person. I wanted the best for her and I harbored no illusion that I am the best person for her and she seemed happy with her boyfriend, so I didn't bother her anymore. But we kept in touch and we became friends and I got over my crush on her. Then she broke up with her boyfriend, we drank some alcohol because of it. I told her she'll be fine and I wished her well. I still think she's the most beautiful woman in the world, but like I said, I am over my crush on her. It was like five years already since I first saw her. Besides, I am quite happy with the friendship I developed with her. It was more important than a crush. So we kept hanging out, drinking, having coffee, and all. I had a girlfriend, she started dating other guys. My girlfriend wanted to live some other life without me in it, so I said, "Okay, I want the best for you and I want you to pursue your happiness." My lady friend and I drank alcohol about it, and she gave me the same advice I gave her when she was in that position and I became okay with the breakup immediately. But we were really drunk, so she spent the night in my apartment. I only have one bed, so you know what that means: She took the bed and I slept on the couch. But on the couch, I really can't sleep. Something was bothering me. So I tossed and turned for about three hours, then I finally couldn''t take it anymore, I stood up and went straight to my room where she's sleeping. I approached the bed, gently sat on it and I reached for her shoulder to pull her closer to me. She stirred and woke up. She asked what's up. I told her, "you know, the first time I saw you, I was watching a video and left it playing to get myself a sandwich then went to the store to get some mayo then I got so distracted by life that I forgot to finish the video." She said, "You know what, I've been wondering about a weird noise in your night drawer." So we opened that drawer, and lo and behold, there's my phone and this video still has two minutes of play time on it.

Chicago got lucky...because if Steve wasn't fired from W4 in Detroit a year earlier. This would have happened at Tiger Stadium and would probably have caused a bigger uproar than it already was then.

"Why do we always have to listen to this old stuff, Sarge?" "Watch your mouth, son. This "stuff" is your history. It should remind you grunts what we're fightin' to protect!" "Hey, if the Covenant want to wipe out this particular part of my history, that's fine by me." "Yeah, better it than us." "You ask 'em real nice next time you see 'em, Bisenti. I'm sure they'll be happy to oblige."

KSFX had a rocky time finding itself til it settled on a great rock n roll format. Previously it was a disco station, then a soft rock station playing Cliff Richard or Christopher Cross. Finally, around late 1980 it was a fully fledged rock station during which time there was also KOME, KSJO, KMEL (the camel), KCBS (later KRQR), and also KSAN from which to choose a rock format. Time does not sit still.

Interesting that this clip is from near Christmas 1978, and yet the music is heavy from 77 (Funtime, Spanish Stroll). Was KROQ catching up on songs they missed the year before? I ask because I know the change to Roq Of The 80's (re: Alternative) is somewhat subtle and takes place over about a four year period, starting roughly with Bingenheimer's hire in 1976. Just curious if any old time KROQ listeners have the answer.
