Fantastic choices. Conan Is the best. Flash Gordon was a surprise too
@SequentialTreasures2 күн бұрын
Yeah, Conan is currently the "gold standard" of how to create a comic with a well-known property. Many in the industry would do well to learn from Titan Comics example (though, I doubt they will). So, it was an easy choice for my best of the year. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for your comment.

Brilliant coverage James! Also , check the profiles of these schmucks. It's usually a bot as many of their posts are the same picture. Or just newly made. I got into it with one on Roy Thomas's page. He was saying how he grew out of Roy's writing! As I was saying Roy and Shooter should be consultants for the MCU. I also pointed out Roy is considered Legendary as a writer. Look at the books that are favorites by the comics community! He replied back, "you must be the type of person who thinks he is right all the time?" I replied back, have you looked in the mirror lately?
@SequentialTreasures9 күн бұрын
Oh, I don't doubt it. But there are also brainlettes out there who actually believe this nonsense they spew. They simply can't accept the numbers and reality, because of either being too indoctrinated into their ideology or thinking anyone who don't believe as them are just a "troll" to be ignored. But, as a famous little Jewish man once said: "Facts don't care about your feelings." So, they can deny and ignore the numbers, but they don't lie and their denials won't change them. Well, one thing I can say about the mutant titles at this time, especially Uncanny X-Men, is how well they handled big characterization issues, like this one. Even without a "big bad" to face, the issue had great pacing and kept you engaged, while not feeling like a morality lecture, as so many modern comics do. Glad you enjoyed this one, my friend!
@legkick116 күн бұрын
Hello James! This reminds me of the Blue Beetle movie, where the director was talking about how Hispanic people get stereotyped in movies, by "white directors!" Yet what does he do? He portrays the uncle as a stereotypical older Hispanic man. And the Grandmother a Guerilla. It's crazy! It just emphasizes a lack of talent by Writers, Directors, and so called artists, who push this nonsense.
@SequentialTreasures16 күн бұрын
And that's what happens, when you look at everything through an "Identitarian lens." You want to "think outside the box" on how to represent a certain group, to show the authentic experience of said group, without resorting to stereotypes, but when they try, they always end up doing the most stereotypical things to "spotlight" that group, even more so than the type of people they claim always do. And what makes it all so funny, is that they don't even see themselves doing it. This is why none of their DEI creations ever work out. Thanks for your thoughts, as always.

And that's perfectly fine. But it doesn't absolve her (and many others) of what they have said and done to bring about the collapse that the industry is suffering. It doesn't change the fact she (and those who think like her) have driven away many readers from this industry. So, their supposed concern rings very hollow and very ironic. Because if they aren't willing to accept the role they played in all this, how can they do what needs to be done to fix it? And more importantly, why should we have any sympathy for the conundrum they now find themselves in? Interesting questions, I think. Sadly, I don't think anyone will like the answers. They don't know who really pays their wages. Manga also is beating the American comic industry because look at where you can buy Manga! They are almost everywhere! Walmart, Target, Barnes N Noble. American comics companies do not care, they are just run by political idealogues. Thanks for the video James! Hope you and Heidi are well.
@SequentialTreasuresАй бұрын
Just further proof of how these political ideologues don't know how to market and satisfy an audience. Manga's dominance shows the disconnect Western comic makers have with their audience, that the Manga creators don't. Thanks for your thoughts, as always, my friend.
@benboru9013Ай бұрын
You tell them to go tell their slice-of-life stories about their politics in their own books, but they already know it won't sell and that's why they try so hard to cram it into Spider-Man and anything else they can get their hands on. Definitely not a lot of respect for the history or legacy of these characters.
@SequentialTreasuresАй бұрын
Well, that's because they don't see the characters as the iconic touchstones they really are. For this type, it's merely a platform to launch their political bile from. That's why they don't go make their own political comics separate from everything else. Because while they would be able to do exactly what they are now, they wouldn't have the platform and attention they get doing it with a character like Spider-Man. And it is a waste (in their minds) to pump out "the message" when no one is listening. The point is to make people have to see it and interact with it (plus it turns escapism into "no escapism," which is also something they want). Doing their own solo thing doesn't accomplish that.
@benboru9013Ай бұрын
@SequentialTreasures So true, and so sad :(
@benboru9013Ай бұрын
Those are some rather ignorant takes from Busiek. Really, he's just trying to semantically justify bad behavior from he and his cohorts. At it's most basic, a customer is a client. So saying that the buying readers aren't clients is like saying that when you go in to a local restaurant to eat, you're not a client. Just because we don't go into the back and negotiate our dinner with the cook directly doesn't mean we don't have a client relationship. The cook is hired by, and operates, as part of the entity that is providing goods, and the consumers of those goods are the clients. Period. Once the cook contracts to engage in producing at item for sale (a meal) he now shares in that companies relationship with the client. Saying that it's just freelance doesn't change the dynamic between the company and client, only between the company and employee. It's basically only the difference between a long-term employee and a short term one. He's clearly just twisting semantics here in order to rationalize his, and others, self-serving positions. Once, you engage with an entity to serve a product to the client, you now share in the responsibility to that company's client base. NOT to yourself.
@SequentialTreasuresАй бұрын
That is basically the point that Busiek (and many others) have been obfuscating for many years now, to justify and excuse their poor online and business behavior. It's simply an "otherizing" tactic. That way they can attack the readers who complain about their horrible work, or seeing the properties they have supported for years being subverted for political reasons, and they don't have to accept the fact they are quite literally biting the hand that feeds them. This is what happens to you when you become a political ideologue, who believes that anyone who doesn't think as you do is "evil." Really, the point in this video is what is at the core of the issues the industry is suffering with today. Once you have otherized your audience, the end of your business/industry is close at hand. Because you can't properly service an audience/client you hate. Which is exactly what has been happening in comics for the last decade. Thanks for your well-thought out comment. It's exactly the kind I always hope to get with this kind of videos.

X-Factor was a great series in the beginning. I remember reading an interview and seeing some preliminary art with Dazzler as the female character before they decided to resurrect Jean Grey. Always wondered how that would have been.
@SequentialTreasuresАй бұрын
Huh, I didn't know that. It does sound interesting, especially since around the same time Dazzler was losing her solo series. But without the Maddy/Jean torment for Scott, it certainly would have lost a lot of that "soap opera drama" I talked about. It certainly would have made the book feel very different than the one we all know. Don't know if I could imagine the series without it. Thanks for the info and comment, my friend!

Great point about Grummets work and making them look like teens. I feel like Jiminez did the same insdie the book too. The movie theater scene doesnt just play like school kids going out but visually supports that. Coincidentally they both did work on New Titans and i think Grummet was up and down on that book with making them look young. I feel like sometimes he nailed it, and sometimes they looked older. Might just be, and might have been inkers. Great video and great choice of books to cover. Its so nice being able to revisit the eras of comics you cover.
@SequentialTreasuresАй бұрын
Yeah, there is a real trick to making young people look young, not just like shrunken adults. Grummett really knows how to get that "softness" (for lack of a better word) of them, which gets that effect across very well. It's something a lot of comic artists struggle with. Of course, I agree that getting the right inker also helps in that, as a bad one will destroy such delicate details. Thanks for your comment.

I noticed that the bullies often show that they are incompetent. They hire each other, so this idiocy spreads. They are also owned by a mentally deficient Corporation, run by incompetent people. The anger is a sign of stupid! Great job James.
@SequentialTreasuresАй бұрын
Yeah, that makes sense, but I think Willingham really hit on it, by saying that those who can escape this atmosphere, without sacrificing their careers, have already done so, leaving only the "incompetent bullies" running the mainstream. This is why things aren't getting better, even as sales and relevance for the industry keep declining. Without any of "the adults" in the room, just incompetent bullies, the situation can never improve. And that's what we are seeing. This is way all the reboots and revamps fall flat today. It's a situation all of their own making and is why they can't take any of the responsibility for it. Because bullies NEVER take the blame for what they do. Thanks for your insights, as always, my friend.
