Excellent video on using the Provane and very interesting to see how you gybe with the vane. I would be interested to know why you chose Provane over the Hydrovane?
@bhsailor3 ай бұрын
There are several reasons. The Provane is mostly made from standard parts. In case something breaks you get spare parts in every hardware store. And you get a really good support since the vendor is not such a big company as Hydrovane where you are just a number. And of course the price. It's cheaper. The Hydrovane is well-known and for sure a high quality product but you pay for the brand.

You find such boats let's say between 50 und 100k, dependent on their condition of course. I was more to the lower end of this scale but had to invest a lot to get it ready.

Hi Bernhard, I wanted to let you know I have just finished installing the Provane on my Aloha 34 and this video was VERY helpful in getting it properly set up and I was able to have my first successful experience using it this afternoon for a couple of hours, thanks to your video. The manual from Imre is helpful, but seeing your video and the actual functioning of the windvane through the different stages of setting it up make it much easier to understand. Thanks!

That's great to hear, thank you very much! Although I knew how everything works in theory I needed some time to figure out how to practically operate it. Hence I thought such video may be useful.

Great video Bernhard, can you please tell few words about your boat and sails you beeen using.
@bhsailor9 ай бұрын
Thank you! The boat is a Belliure Endurance 35 built in 1983, traditional long keel boat. There is a video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZfVaqRqgL-Fl5Y) where I talk about the boat. The sails are from a hybrid material called Hydranet which is said to be bullt-proof. It is tri-radial cut and I'm very happy with them. All sails are new. I bought them specifically for this project since the original sails which came with the boat where pretty worn-out.

Sehr gutes Video!

Very educative explanation and demonstration of the vind vane. Thanks! IMHO: What causes the boat to head up by itself, especially in gusts, is the heel. The heel causes the forces acting on the sails and those acting on the hull/keel to be moved apart from each other in the horizontal plane. This causes a moment turning the boat towards the wind. An imbalanced sail plan also may lead to weather helm, but the strong tendency to head up comes from the heel. This is why you want to keep a boat as upright as possible. @5:05 you say that the vind vane should not try to permanently counter balance... Well, of course the boat should be balanced, the sails be well trimmed, no heavy bias on the main rudder, but then the job of the vind vane is exactly this: Counterbalancing any forces which take the boat off course, it has to counterbalance its tendency constantly wanting to head up. A note on stalling sails: When pointing too high, the sails get depowered, but they do not stall. The wind just rushes along the canvas without generating lift. The sails are stalled when pointing too low or when oversheeted. Then the laminar flow breaks down, becomes turbulent, you get very little lift and excessive stress on the rigg and a lot of heel.
@bhsailor Жыл бұрын
Yes, you are absolutely right with everything you say here. Heel is a major issue. That's why reefing is important and you may be even faster with properly reefed sails than without.
@bhsailor Жыл бұрын
And "to stall" means IMO that the aerodynamic flow collapses. And this can very well happen if it points to high to (or almost into) the wind. But probably this is just a matter of you using the right vocabulary.
@quantenschaum Жыл бұрын
@@bhsailor Maybe it's a question of how "to stall" is defined. But in this case stalling means that the angle of attack is too big AFAIK. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stall_%28fluid_dynamics%29
@bhsailor Жыл бұрын
Yes, of course. So you're absolutely right. I should have known that.
