Amazing stuff! Just wanted to let you know I come on here every day to watch your videos - you’re always top of my search bar! Me and my grandparents lived here for 5 years around 2005. Beautiful house, I was only 13 at the time but was terrified as my bedroom was just down the hall from the chapel inside the house. I use to run down the hall to the bathroom every time as I was so scared! Amazing now reading all the history behind it.

Lol, a few years back my morals were put sorely to the test in Boots in Lincoln. I'd got a large pack of razor blades. There were no shop assistants at all in the PAY HERE section and I couldn't get the self-service till to work. Very annoying! I was sorely tempted to just walk out the store with them and make a quick getaway round the nearest corner. But my conscience got the better of me and so I put the blades back on their shelf and departed empty-handed. But whenever I read that supermarkets are having a lot of trouble with stuff being stolen because of self-service tills I always think to myself 'Serves 'em right!'
@lightanddreamsphotography71403 күн бұрын
I agree, I avoid self-check out tills as much as I can, they never seem to work properly and I'd rather keep human beings in with a job :)

I don't mind them to be honest. My main moans about getting around the pedestrian precinct are large groups of people who stand nattering to each other while blocking most of the space, and fast food deliveries on bikes without a care in the world for anyone else :(

I remember the revolving door, the lift operator who always seemed to have a fag going, there was a big ashtray for customers in the corner of the lift, and I also remember the lending library where my Mother would get her books. (she probably also used the ashtray). I'm also trying to remember whether there was a restaurant on the top floor but we never used it if there was. Perhaps someone else will remember.

According to the book 'Shops and Shopping in Lincoln: A History' published by The Survey of Lincoln in 2018, Boots moved from there in 1973. Interestingly, it mentions that when the building was constructed in the 1920s it was agreed with the council that it be set further back than the old building to enable wider pavements, also that the corner would be at an angle instead of square on so that people could more easily negotiate the corner.

Benefit.. not Truefit (as I guessed, yesterday).. don't remember that name, although I wasn't around in the '50s. Very fine, old photo. 'Belisha beacons were named after Leslie Hore-Belisha (1893-1957), the Minister of Transport who, in 1934, added beacons to pedestrian crossings.. '

I only realised from watching yesterday that Boots has moved to the other side of the High Street! What is in the old Boots premises now? I remember as a child being horrified coming down the stairs because I had hooked my umbrella over the handrail and let go. It went shooting down towards the hand of an old lady much further down, but she took her hand off just in time for my umbrella to shoot past her - how embarrassing 😑

I would have been 2 too! But I didn’t come to live in the area until I was 7 (Waddington then, North Hykeham later) I remember the pedestrianisation being done and fantasizing about rollerskating all over it, which I never did. I don’t have any memories of what it looked like before, so this is an amazing time slip for me. I agree that the area looks so much better now, it makes the buildings stand out so you can enjoy them rather than them disappearing into a long anonymous high street (apart from the Stonebow of course)
@lightanddreamsphotography714012 күн бұрын
I remember the doomsayers predicting that pedestrianisation would kill the city centre. Of course it did the opposite, and made it much safer too.
