Jessica Lange makes language seem three-dimensional, like a scalpel, or a hacksaw, or a sledgehammer. She uses language to cut, crush, flatten, and expose whatever lies or truths are in the way of her characters. Fucking brilliant, she is.

When you can see a more honest script, it changes everything ... if the 1958 film had been allowed more freedom, the ending in the film (1958 ) would have been more realistic. I couldn't understand the motivation for the sudden change in Brick's attitude toward Maggie [the kissy-kissy ending as the closing credits rolled].

And, we did. I don’t think you can do a Tennessee Williams play without multiple undertones and nuances. These performances lack that. Except maybe for Jessica Lange. All the other actors play one note

The film with Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman, Burl Ives, Judith Andersin, etc, was a scorcher in the fifties. A great film. You got to have a talent like Jessica Lang on board, if you want to have the guts to re do it. Lang is one of the greatest actors on film. From her Fancis Farmer to Blue Sky her instincts and genius in her craft can take you down there. She can remind me i have a soul when she pierces it on screen. Elizabeth Taylor in the fifties and sixties was a one woman revolution. She and Brando and Sydny Portier, etc, in the sixties brought about the ratings system. Suddenly Last Summer with Tennessee Williams and Elizabeth Taylor was, and is still, shocking. Taylor's visceral empathy and passion on film was one of a kind. Taylor was a fire storm and is legendary. Tommy Lee Jones is a great talent. He certainly smolders here, he and Lang are a great team up. Jones casts a spell here, I hung on every word. His Raven haired rustic good looks compliment Lang thoroughly. Beauriful woman. But much more his talent and instincts shine here, like hers. In the film in the fifties, when the director landed Newman and Taylor in the leads he insisted on color, because they were so good looking, black and white couldn't do justice to their eyes alone. One of Burl Ives best films. Like Burl Ives in the fifties, Rip Torn here is a revelation. Masterful job by one talented man. These four in this version are a firestorm. Great time watching them make a Tennessee Williams piece their own. I could not look away. Hypnotic. Excellence.

I LOVE JESSICA LANGE. I think she's a fabulous actress. Her interpretation is great, different than that of ELIZABETH TAYLOR'S. TAYLOR'S to me was more seductive, like a cat. Jessica's, to me, is a little more trashy. It's not a bad thing, just different. Jessica only got better through the years. One of my favorite films of hers, besides "Sweet Dreams" is "Blue Sky," with Tommy Lee Jones. Her performance in "Grey Gardens" was phenomenal! 💙

So glorious, watched this 100 times since I was a teenager. I do have to say however, The only people who could dare call this overacting would have to be under the influence of pure Yankee mendacity or a shameless sympathizer of the northern aggression...lmao. Being raised in a home and family with a distinctly deserved air of aristocracy I can assure you, I hear nothing in this play I haven't heard in nearly every gathering at my Grandmother's well set dinner table...not to mention the post gorging activities on the back porch swings....lmao. And we wont even go into the molasses smooth banter at the family reunions every year, where roamed more cats, male and female, than you'd find in the poorly lit back alley of a Florida Panhandle fish market. The only downside to this masterpiece performance by all involved is that for 2-3 weeks afterwards I am damn near insufferable in conversation, sporting a plantation drawl that leaves everyone around me with eyes like daggers and displaying the confused expressions worthy of a proper southerner bearing witness to manner-less trash so completely bereft of etiquette as to wear white after labor day IN PUBLIC without even a semblance of the shame such behavior would rightly call for, not to mention the lack of breeding and proper upbringing it exposes, but I digress as I think you can comprehend my point without me having to monologue any further, despite it's most probable assistance in your education on the matter, but I assume if you haven't the breeding required to have understood and called out a few AMENS by now you most probably aren't worth any more of my time.
