Hey Mr. Hopkins, I’m really hoping this reaches you eventually. I’m happy to see you’re still as nerdy as ever, I just binge watched fleabag and thought of you talking about this show. I just wanted to say thank you for everything, your inspiring efforts have permanently embedded in my mind:) Hope you’re doing well!

hi, would this be relevant to talk about when talking about Golding's purpose of the loft, like the book being a psychological allegory, therefore, explaining why mankind is inherently evil? :)
@mrhopkinsenglish3 жыл бұрын
This is a great question, and sorry for the slow reply. Absolutely, we (the reader) can see LOTF as a psychological allegory for the human personality based on Freud's work. However, did Golding intend for this to be the case? The answer to that is that it doesn't matter! If we read the text that way, and can support our reading, then our critical analysis is justified. I hope this answered your question :)

I believe it's not possible to categorize humans into evil or good. So, I think both Hobbes, and Locke are correct and wrong in some way. Golding would surely agree with Hobbes as he countlessly makes the characters seem violent and selfish. However, Ballantyne would subscribe to Locke because the coral island portrayed themes of peace, and maturity.
@hanyahashem84703 жыл бұрын
Oops, I didn't get to the part where you said I should provide evidence. Anyways, Humans are all born good, their future self is based on the environment they grow up in and how they deal with pain or struggles. Mencius, a Chinese philosopher believed that all humans were good, which is backed up by his saying that, "Human nature is good, just as water seeks low ground. There is no man who is not good, just as there is no water that does not flow downward." Golding would agree with Hobbes as he gives his characters selfish traits such as, in chapter 2, Jack craving control and being liked by others through bullying and invalidating Piggy. "shut up" (Golding, 21). Ballantyne would agree with Locke as he indicates Ralph as peaceful when describing him meditating, and feeling "exulting" upon acknowledging the "kind creator of this beautiful world." (Ballantyne, 1) The boys additionally care for each other and respect rules such as food fetching.
