I wouldn't mind even a slower aperture lens, if the bokeh were nicer to my preferences, for example I had a Fujifilm X100S, in operation it surely was prehistoric compared to a less older camera like the G1 X III, and its f/2 lens in full frame equivalence, I mean in how much it can defocus, surely is f3.2 or so, but it was a nice bokeh and rendering, my brothers pause a moment when they see the printed photos of family gatherings (yep, I am not a pro, so I prefer a camera I can hide into a pocket so I can talk and enjoy the gatherings) It seems not that different from a Sony RX10 1 and 2, with their constant 24-200mm eq. f2.8 lenses in their one inch sensors, cameras that I think have been replaced by the Sony RX100 VI which have the same focal length coverage and a slower zoom lens to make it pocketable, but then again the lens seems to be high quality.

I know the Panasonic Lumix CM1 from when it was new in 2014, but in my country it never came, I would have bought one if it was possible. In general smartphones are crap compared to real cameras. I had the Microsoft Lumia which had Zeiss Lens, it was good for a smartphone, but not compared to cameras, now I have the iPhone 13 Pro which is ok and have macro, but still not good enough. I hope that either cameras and lenses gets much better in smartpgones or that cameras and totally dropped from smartphones ! If cameras and lenses shall be much better in smartphones, then the phones need to be thicker, will people have thicker phones today ??? I do not think, so real cameras are the best for serious photography, I use Sony A7RV which is a great Camera.

I love my G1 X mark iii. Thank you for making a video about it! Here’s to hoping Canon makes a version four. I prefer mine with a leather half case to make it easier to hold (it’s so small it is borderline awkward for my adult male hands) and the screw on lens hood allows you to use a larger lens cover that is less fumbley and the lens hood gives good protection with the lens cover in your pocket against bumps or accidental finger touches. The lens hood also lets me attach a Nisi closeup filter for massively improved macro and almost zero setup. I still have one of the 3rd party petal automatic lens covers too, but I find I prefer the lens hood in most situations and you can’t use both. I set the front ring to step zoom and remap the AF point selection button to ISO. I live in Av / M. Two custom My Menu tabs give me good access to fast settings in the field. The lens holds the camera back slightly because indoors it goes pretty high on ISO / you have to watch shutter speed, and thus it’s not “for beginners” because it needs monitoring to give reliable or good results in these everyday low light situations. And I wish I could use it as a webcam for video meetings plugged into a computer. But I love it quirks and all. I don’t want a large camera for everyday life but I do love having one with adjustable controls like the G series cameras have. I’m also an R5 owner and the G1X is an excellent second camera. Please Canon make mark iv.
@leadwhite124912 күн бұрын
Thanks for sharing your usage scenario. I tried using the olympus automatic lens cover which fits nicely, but I found it darkened the corners at 24mm, so that was a no go. Would love a mark 4 though!
@tylerbenner12 күн бұрын
@ JJC ALC-G1XM3 auto lens cap has no vignette. It can be a little squeaky rubbing on the barrel, but I’ve quieted that with some electrical tape. Like I wrote before though, I believe the screw on lens hood and larger lens cap is the best approach. I do like the JJC auto lens cap, but I save it for complete one-hand operation / specialty scenarios. They are very similarly sized with the camera off in a bag. The Canon 49mm lens cap is much easier to hold than the 37mm one. The 37mm lens cap is so small my finger tips don’t easily fit into the slots for accurate removal. Solving the lens cap situation really improved my happiness with the camera because fingers get uncoordinated in cool weather and the camera is already cramped and borderline everything so small it is unwieldy. Hopefully my messages give you confidence to keep looking at different lens cap options if you’re annoyed with what the camera comes with like I was.
@leadwhite124912 күн бұрын
I don't like those petal style auto lens, just from the way they look. In the end, I got a little uv filter, and now I don't worry so much if forget to put the lens cap every time.

@@leadwhite1249 try the lens hood, I think you’ll like it! JJC makes an affordable one too. I do prefer the Canon branded 49mm lens cap however because of the finger slots. For me it was worth exploring! This camera is amazing but with a couple ergonomic challenges.

Agree with all the commentary. I was crossed between a Fujifilm X70, several M4/3 cameras, the Nikon J5, and the Coolpix A among 5 other cameras. I've got a bunch of other dedicated cameras but I don't grab them for every day photos with the family. To this end I also needed a flip up screen to grab a selfie with my fiance and myself every once and while. This and small size ended up being the goals. The X70 would have been the ultimate here but I can't justify the insane prices quite yet (maybe someday). I was able to get an excellent condition J5, extra batteries, the PD Zoom VR 10-30mm, the 18.5mm prime, the 70-300mm tele, and the 6.7-13mm wide angle, plus associated filters for just under $800 by some careful shopping. The cheapest good condition X70 I could find at time of this comment was $1272 on the used market which is just insane considering it was $699 new and I kick myself for not buying it then when I had a chance. If you can stomach the 70-300mm tele price it's an amazing compliment to the J5. I use it for birding pretty successfully.

Great photos and review! Really unfortunate this did not sell better. Sure it was ultra thick by smartphone standards and lambasted for it but it was the slimmest 1" sensor camera out there by a fair margin. And if you ignore the ultrawide 19mm and 23mm 1" phones, which are a touch too wide imo for general purpose photography, it still is. Certainly thinner than carrying two devices. It bugged me that DPReview complained about the bulk when they are a camera website and the CM1 is comfortably in the top 1% of cameras with regard to thinness even including 1/2.3" digicams. They also did the CM1 dirty in their low light test by shooting at ISO 3200. Seriously considered switching to this from my Nokia 808 but the 808 had the same light gathering (f2.4 1/1.2 vs f2.8 1"), xenon flash, non-retracting lens, thinner, replaceable battery, brighter better screen, and sharper lens. On the other hand the 808 didn't have RAW and the manual camera controls were garbage. Dynamic range was also bad. Both had crappy autofocus and no IBIS but back then I thought, "Sony will fix this. They had a 1" camera with phase detect, xenon flash, image stabilization, and superb video in the RX100 IV so maybe some version could make it into a smartphone". It never did. Maybe if the CM1 saw some success that might have happened. As for smartphones vs cameras, I prefer the physical controls, RAW, flash, and normal focal lengths of cameras versus the extremely waxy, over-sharpened, and unnatural color output that has characterized most smartphones in the decade since the CM1. Especially irritating from Samsung and Sony who know better. The one computational feature I like that regular cameras don't have is the easy HDR since blown out skies are a pet peeve of mine. The ultrawides in smartphones can be pretty handy too even if the quality is typically mediocre. But it looks like the Chinese manufacturers are picking up the torch where Nokia (and Panasonic) dropped it a decade ago with a handful of 1" phones back on the market. And based off one comparison I saw on KZbin of the RX100VII vs the vivo X200, it looks like they are finally succeeding considering their first attempts at 1" phones in 2022 left a lot to be desired. Still nothing from the big three in the US though. I do more video nowadays and smartphone video tends to walk all over digicams so they definitely have that going for them. Neither are enough to make me happy though I really wish they were. If Panasonic does a new LX100 but with the phase detect and IBIS from the G9II, I can finally rest. PS, I actually like the fact you aren't using a teleprompter. The video and audio quality are great but it doesn't have an overproduced or over-rehearsed feel.

I feel that the limiting factors here are competition from other systems like m43 and pentax q, and the rather limited lens selection. I gonna assume you meant the older Canon G10 point and shoot, since there doesn't seem to be a Gx10. The older 1/1.7" sensors are pretty obselete these days and have been superseded by 1" sensors (usually with 20mp). A sony RX100 or (ZV1 if you care more about video), or a canon GX7 or GX5 would all be a good upgrade if you want a similar form factor. The G1X cameras are probably one step larger. If you care about telephoto, check the zoom range, because a lot of the newer point and shoots start wider, but don't zoom in as far.

When I bought into the Nikon one system, I started with the V1 and an FT1 adaptor and the 10 to 30 lens and the 30 to 110. Eventually, after the J5 was discontinued I bought it for a very reasonable price with the kit lens like you mentioned, I was able to purchase some extension tubes which with that 30 to 110 lens makes an awesome combination for flowers and birds with stabilization. It’s my travel ensemble like you say with very good auto focus and the lenses are so small that they fit into a little fanny pack when you travel. I carry two extra batteries as well. Tends to use up a lot of batteries. Like you mentioned it’s like an RX 100 with interchangeable lenses so very versatile system. I do have 6.7 mm wide angle zoom and it is a beautiful lens. It looks extremely sharp. I also use with the FT 1 adaptor with my 70 to 300 FX lens for birds which is a really good combination. The Nikon one system was way ahead of its time and it was the first point and shoot camera I ever bought because auto focus and low light abilities for point shoot cameras were terrible back then. I enjoyed your review very comprehensive. I also wanted that 32 mm F1 .2 portrait lens but like you say it’s very expensive. One of the pros of olympus cameras is they are often easy to get cheap, even for relatively newish models.

thanks for the review My search for an alternative to my aging fuji x30 and looking for something else than leica d-lux 8 leads me here. , amazing this old camera is still better than most recent one. , I wish you could provide some insight for portraits and dof

As long as you shoot raw and watch the highlights I think this is one of the better point and shoots (at least with zoom). As you get into the longer range (80-120mm) you can achieve a fairly shallow dof.
