Your guess on the possible fraud being planned is plausible, and I admit I did not consider this possibility. Indeed some retailers may be willing to deliver goods just with a customer’s bank sort code, account number and home address. However I have never come across this option with any of my own on-line shopping activities. Other than that, fraud is difficult to commit with just bank sort code and account number, although a fraudulent Direct Debit could be set up. However the Direct Debit Guarantee protects you in the UK. Then again if a fraudster managed to gain access to more of your personal details (E.g. Date of Birth, mother’s maiden name, National Insurance Number, etc) through data breaches or social engineering, they could commit identity theft against you. So the bottom line is ONLY give such details to well know organisations to set up direct debit mandates, and NEVER to people you don’t know cold calling you.
