I had the pleasure of walking into a breaker's yard when working in the UK in 1984. "I don't suppose you would have an overdrive gearbox for an MGB Mk I ?" I said. "Sure", he replied. "There's two sitting on the floor over there" he said. "Help yourself to one." Things were a little less happy when I drained the oil prior to shipping it home, and a whole lot of metal filings drained out in the oil. But a gearbox and overdrive rebuild prior to fitting it, (and one more since after about another 140,000 miles), and the wrecker's yard gearbox and overdrive is still providing excellent service in my now 250,000 mile MGB.

@@IconicBrands123With our vast distances in this country, I never understood the logic of selling MGB's without even the option of overdrive available from 1963 to 1968, when "the penny" must have finally "dropped". I quite often travelled 600 miles in a day when touring. I used to drop the car into neutral and coast on longer downhill sections, just to give my ears a break.

When I was 18yo (in 2002), the x-type was the very first Jag I drove (it was a 2.5 petrol). I really liked it, it was the very best car I got on at such time... It felt to me like a nice quality thing. Now I have an XKR x150 Convertible and an XJR x356... And I still like the X-types. I wouldn't mind to have one as a daily driver. Sometimes I think to give one to my wife as present, she loves them because she thinks the XKR and the XJR are too big for her.

Exactly the same here. I could have killed for a mark 1 at 11 years old when they came out but my father didn't buy me one. I think that you should start a club for deprived boomer chopper children. I bought my first Raliegh Chopper, a mark 4 in ultra violet at 64 years old last year. Very sad and the neighbours think it is very strange but who cares what anybody else thinks. They just don't understand. Johhny Seven next maybe, rather more expensive than the £4 19s and 6d they used to be in the early 60's 😢.

RALEIGH announcement in 2023..."We’re relaunching one of the most iconic bikes of all time: the Raleigh Chopper. Back in all its original glory, this Limited-Edition 2023" is almost an exact replica of the old-school Chopper MK2 - from the U-shaped handlebars down to the chunky rear wheel". Now they are releasing "Limited Edition edition 2024". Both the same bike.

Lovely looking GT! I do really like the original steel wheels on them. A month ago here in OZ I bought an early 67 GT in Sandy Beige (GT only colour) on chrome wires. It has a period Tudor Webasto sunroof, black leather with white piping to interior & new carpets. It has a mild cam in a rebuilt engine and a close ratio gearbox with Overdrive. I OWNED THIS VERY CAR IN THE 1980s. I purchasing it in 1984 and sold it in 1988 - it is now back in my ownership after 36 years. I found it purely by chance on an online car sales site. Initially I thought it looked like my old MG due to the colour, but when I saw the detail photos I realised it was my old GT! What chance in that it has survived in that time, accidents, rust, neglect etc. It is still in excellent condition, testament to is owners post me and retains 90% percent of its original paint when I had it - and it's still rust free which is a blessing here.

I bought one almost exactly the same just yesterday (06/06/2024) and I've yet to collect it from the (private) seller. Went for a test drive (took me a few minutes to get used to auto's again) and was delighted. It's the 3.0 Sovereign AWD model (2007) and it cost me £1,900. The insurance will be an extra £260 on top of what I was paying for my (manual) 2005 Volvo S80 D5 SE Lux and it would have been considerably more if I wasn't registered as disabled (Blue Badge etc). The Volvo has now done 144,460 miles and the Jag has done only 68,770 miles. The main reason for the change though was the switch from manual to automatic because of my disability. The Jag is smaller of course, but the grab-handle over the drivers door helped me to get in (and out). However, I'm not looking forward to the huge increase in fuel consumption from a 2.4L Turbo diesel (average 44mpg) to a 3.0L V6 (average - no idea). Can't have it all ways though, I guess..!!

I have had a couple of classics, a 1957 100e Anglia in 1991 and into the club scene and later a 1971 Stag in 2002 again into the club scene. Later in life i got well into the MG Zed scene. Had an MGF, ZR and three ZS 180s, two of which i still own. My 2002 car i have owned from 2006 and was my daily family car. Retired in 2012 and SORN as i couldn't part with it, replaced it with a more modern car. Later recomissioned and put onto the show/ club scene. I would call these and others with the 15 to 25 age group ' enthusiasts cars' as opposed to classics. Moving the free road tax from 25 to 40 years hasn't helped prices. ZS 180 now £415 per year which is a piss take when many only do two or three thousand a year to shows/ Sunday afternoon drives etc. I think there is a Goverment agender to get these 'ungreen' cars to the scrapman.

I bought two TR7s in a deal, a hard top and a soft top. My girlfriend and I decided to drive them from London to my lock up in Brighton. The hard top broke down on the A3 in New Malden, so we got a rope and towed it with the convertible. The convertible broke down on the A24, just past Dorking. So there we were, with two broken down TR7s attached by a bit of rope. I had to get the train to Brighton, get my W123 estate out and tow them down to Brighton one at a time. It was a long night and the last time I will ever buy a TR7.

The UK market will always remain bad, unlike the rest in Europe and USA etc.. leaving the EU was of course also very stupid. The car steering wheel is on the wrong side and the cars are usually in worse condition, due to the weather. In the Netherlands, a classic is very popular. A Mercedes S from the 1990s easily costs 50,000 euros and a C124 is easily between 25 and 40,000 euros. In the next 10 years, it will double. An SLK is just old junk and funny that it is there. That's never going to be worth anything. Everything after 1995 is 👎

Can’t see what this has to do with leaving the EU, my understanding is the EU wants to tighten restrictions on old vehicles, modifications and self repairing. Hopefully not something the UK will adopt, but probably will. We can still import cars from South Africa, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan and enjoy right hand drive, doesn’t seem so bad to me.
