You can completely purify biodiesel through distillation, which results in a clear oil that looks like water. I have fractionally distilled biodiesel made with ethanol to have a fraction of enriched saturated esters, and the rest is a pure unsaturated product. The unsaturated product has a lower melting point that allows it to be used in colder climates without gelling. My research also recycled the glycerol byproduct into a glyceroxide catalyst to minimize the waste and water in the reaction process
@Johnthemousevideo4 күн бұрын
That is very good information, do you know of any biodiesel plants that are cleaning their fuel in this way? I tried to find what production methods are used in plants across the usa so I could point to better areas of fuel quality. If you could point me in the right direction I would appreciate the help.
@kylemcguff55814 күн бұрын
@Johnthemousevideo I doubt that anyone is purifying the fuel via distillation. It requires more energy input and probably more costly. I did this at the lab scale and published my research. When we scaled-up our process to 5-gallon batches with grant funding, we switched over to acid neutralization and water washing. We analyzed the fuel, and it was within ASTM specifications. I would expect that much of the quality is determined by the quality of fat/oil feedstock and minimizing the amount of water in the reaction to avoid making soap, which also maximizes the efficiency of the phase separation between biodiesel and glycerol, and between fuel and water during washing. The glycerol and water phases carry a lot of unwanted substances out of the fuel, so it definitely needs to separate thoroughly. Also, biodiesel is a really good solvent and can dissolve the junk that is inside an engine from petroleum fuels. That can clean the engine but also clog filters. Rubber components may also be dissolved and should probably be replaced with materials that are compatible with biodiesel.

Been a diesel and heavy equipment mechanic for almost 50 years now. I live in upstate PA. I've never seen diesel fuel actually gel. I've even tried to make it happen in my deep freezer,. I always have customers claiming their diesel has gelled but when I get out there to fix the problem it is always water contamination that has frozen
@Johnthemousevideo20 күн бұрын
It's not surprising you couldn't get high sulfur diesel to gel in a deep freezer that only goes down to 0 degrees Fahrenheit. I have found lower sulfur diesel will start getting cloudy before you reach 0 degrees Fahrenheit. Mix in bio diesel you will see it gel in your deep freezer. You are absolutely right on the water and will freeze before the diesel. That is the biggest enemy to diesel. I have a video in my educational playlist that I will be putting up that covers more on winter fuel. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3nSf2RmZ66IjdU I also have one on bio fuel. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaqpZ5Ztq82Db5o Up here in the Midwest we see a lot of people getting gelled up when we have -10 to -30 weather, fillers all plugged up with wax, tanks that look like split pea soup. At that point the only way to get them going, is to heat up the fuel tanks to ungel them. It is very common around here to have trucking companies use tractors to pick up bobtails that had been sitting outside that an apu had quit, move them inside the shop to get them warmed back up to get them started.
@joecummings126020 күн бұрын
@@Johnthemousevideo Yeah I've never seen it do more than get slightly cloudy. Back in the 90's we had a few days that it was like 20 below. I had underground water pipes freeze that my grandfather buried in the late 40's that had newer frozen before. I had trailers stuck all over with the brake shoes frozen to the drum. I had a peterbuilt that had a dip in the compressor discharge line that somehow got enough water in it to freeze solid and it broke the end off the compressor crankshaft when the driver started it. Total nightmare. Not one truck or piece of equipment had the fuel gel. And the only thing I ever treated the fuel with was a little bit of alcohol to treat for water. I've had just about every kind of fuel related problem you can have over the years. Dirt, algae, water, drivers contaminating it with gasoline and killing the cetane value, large foreign objects getting sucked up by the pickup tube, etc. Just never have seen the fuel go below it's pour point
@Johnthemousevideo17 күн бұрын
It sounds like you've definitely seen a lot over the years. What you describe sounds like what we get when it's -40 outside for a week, Problems everywhere you look. You bring up a good point on trailer brakes frozen to the drum I'm going to have to make a video on that subject as it happens a lot. So much we have SKIDDD Wheel Indicators on tires so drivers can safely check tire rotation so they don't destroy a set of tires. The use of Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) for semi-trucks in the United States began in June 2006. The EPA mandated the switch from Low Sulfur Diesel (LSD) to ULSD, reducing sulfur content from 500 parts per million to 15 parts per million. The Minnesota biodiesel debacle started in 2018, issues with B20 biodiesel in cold weather, truckers reported issues with their diesel fuel gelling up in cold temperatures, causing significant disruptions in the transportation industry. It's funny that I can't find a news article about it today. It's like it didn't even happen. But I remember, I've never seen so many trucks gelled up sitting alongside the road, across the state of Minnesota. The Kenworth PremierCare had people on hold for 8hrs trying to get to find help. During that time I had called in to see if I could find a place that could fix a trailer at the time, I gave up after 2hrs on hold. Maybe someone in comments can chime in with their experience during that time.

Appreciate the video I’m a small town garbage man and I’m having lots of issues with my diesel fuel after treatment system on my truck. I’m trying to understand the fuel and DEF treatment process and how it affects my truck running a Detroit D8 engine. Thank you for the information on grades and usages of diesel fuel.
@Johnthemousevideo23 күн бұрын
First of all thank you for your service keeping your neighborhood clean. You are on the right track of learning, it all starts with diesel. I think you're going to really like the next video in my playlist on diesel picking up contaminants, also putting finishing touches on video on bio diesel. They all are touching on how they play a part messing up your fuel injectors spray pattern. So you end up with an incomplete burn of your fuel. Epa calls this pollution and gets collected in your after treatment system. It has its own set of problems that deserves a few videos on it. Your filter gets filled up faster than it should, causing its own problems on the system. You also have another problem going on too, they also see in the pickup trucks. Motors that don't get worked hard don't go into a natural regen. When it goes into a manual regen it just isn't as effective at cleaning the filter and degrades it at the same time. Two drivers that I know use additives year-round, are seeing extended life in their after treatment filter. I hope this helps you in your journey to get to know your system better in your truck. Thanks,

Hey me and my dad found this old mosler safe in a shop that we just rented. Its technically ours now and it looks like its been messed with. Is there any way i can open it? When the people that trued to mess with it left a hole and i can see a little rotating copper part.
@Johnthemousevideo6 ай бұрын
The best way is to use the combination to open the safe. You could try to dial 50-25-50-0, 25-50-25-0, or 50-50-50-0 to see if the safe is set to a factory default combination. You Dial Left and pass 50 three times, stop on 50 the fourth time around. Dial Right and pass 25 twice, stop on 25 third time around. Dial Left and pass 50 once, stop on 50 the second time around. Dial Right slowly until the bolt retracts some where around 0 on the dial. Next would be to try and try to feel the combination by applying light pressure to the bolt handle as you turn the nob. Pressure on the safe prevents the combination from freely turning. Last resort you will have to do some destructive stuff.
