Happy New Year. I am a big fan of Gordon Lightfoot. I noticed you have been tuning down your ovation 12 string a full step meanwhile how are the other 12 string guitars doing?
@GWGuitarStudio13 сағат бұрын
I have been downsizing the collection for the past year or so. I gave my “Moon guitar”’to one of my sons and sold a couple of them. I kept the Ovation, the Guild, and a Cozart Tele 12-string. I keep both acoustic 12-string tuned down a whole step and I have been using GHS medium silk and steel strings on them. The electric 12-string stays in standard pitch. Happy new year to you, too!

Would like to hear your wisdom on the effects, pros and cons of scale length. I’ve read that a longer scale length requires more tension to bring a string up to pitch. But that sounds strange to me. What are the practical considerations. Thanks
@GWGuitarStudio13 сағат бұрын
It is true. The mass of a string brought up to pitch on a 24.75” scale feels more flexible and isn’t as bright as the same string on a 25.5” scale length. Compare the feel of a Les Paul to a Strat. Some of my banjitars are 26.5” and they are much tighter and less flexible.

I have the D'Addario Guitar Capo regular (not Pro Plus). Visually, they look almost identical. The regular is $20, while the Pro Plus is $30. I'm very happy with mine. In fact I bought two more, silver and black. I use them on 12 string acoustic and electric, and on a 6 string vintage Yamaha FG 350D, 1982. These are definitely superior to the heavy spring action capos. Question: What is the difference between the regular and the Pro Plus, aside from the price? Visually they look almost identical. I am happy with the regular, so I see no reason to spend the extra $10 for the Pro Plus.

The Pro Plus is worth the extra $10 for the rubber pad that adjusts.

I have converted my Gibson B-45- 12 to a Cittern; 10 strings in unison pairs tuned to CCGGDDAAEE, in 5ths like mandolin. To handle the extra tension (I also have a pin bridge instead of the original trapeze) I tune it another whole step down on all strings, and then capo up to the C-E (cello)range. It works well. string gauges I use are, from low to high, in thousandths of an inch (though I prefer mm): .070, .047, .034, .020, .012, all wound PB except the high pair which are the ones I have had the greatest problem with. The lightest PB wound strings, which are what I would prefer, just break, and heavier plain steel are hard to play, too stiff. But as i prefer bass, obviously, I don't mind too much. It makes for a very interesting alternative instrument which I love. However I am seeking a designed Cittern now since the old Gib is so heavy and the neck wide. I'm used to it and love the sound especially with the L R Baggs Anthem pick up. By the way, no structural changes were required, just regrooving the nut and saddle.

@@GWGuitarStudio There are 4 vids of me playing it at home, not very good but you can have a look under 'Delton Hedges'. There is also one recording taken at a local event before I had the L R Baggs, but probably shows the instrument a little better. That's under 'Deltone' at 'Monaista' Thanks for your interest. I'm not the only person who has done this conversion, but I might have been one of the first!

Plywood in NOT the only way to laminate. Tables and most large items as such are laminated: strips of wood are laid side-by-side and glued together. They are them planed down so the joints are all flat and flush. Plywood just follows the same but changes the direction for each layer. For strength and durability, laminating rules because it won't warp or break as easily as single pieces could.

You can find the ones from the 70s and 80s in that price range, solid tops, ebony fingerboards. 5-piece necks, American made. Just check Guitar Center’s web site and look for the vintage ones. I have four of them and the most I have paid for one is around $800 with the original case.

I think i found a nice Guild Westerly, 2512E. I believe it has Fishman and an arched back. I spend a lot of time making my 6 string sound like a jangly 12 string, and so many of my favorite songs from the 80s/90s have that sound, so its just time. I believe its spruce top, back and sides, Pao Ferro board. Its slightly used so the price is very good. I just hope its not warped or otherwise not straight. How can i tell? I have a metal straightedge ruler, will that help, if laid against the frets? If it is, and it has two truss rods, it can be straightened? Thanks
@GWGuitarStudioАй бұрын
You can always use the edge of the string as a guide. It’s always going to be a straight line. The two truss rods allow adjusting the bass and treble side separately. Sounds like you are all set for some fun.

My dad has a 70's Peavey 400 series bass head and 2x15 cab, and he plays his telecaster through it. I tried playing through it using an Ibanez GiO and a Zoom 505II as a kid, even an RG with a DigiTech Death Metal when I was a teenager. It definitely does the job! Josh Homme plays through bass amps and crappy solid state practice amps almost exclusively, so I figure if it's good enough for him, and good enough for my dad to play Day Tripper and The Monkees Theme Song... it ought to be good enough for anyone.
