First, take the clicker OFF when casting, or retrieving. The clicker is for alerting you that a fish is on, in freespool mode. Set the hook, and take the clicker off to fight the fish. No sense wearing it out. The tension knob should not be used for slowing the spool. It's purpose is to help center the spool and eliminate excess side play. When you cast with any extra tension you are creating extra wear. Most casting reels can last 40 or 50 years, except maybe the cheap charlie Chinese made ones. Your thumb is your brake. If you need to use spool bearing tension while learning, fine, but as soon as possible you need to ditch the training wheels and loosen up the spool tension. It should be tight enough to eliminate all but a tiny bit of side to side motion, that's it. If you REALLY want distance, get rid of the level wind. That is a huge parasitic drag on your reel and its casting performance. Not just the line guide, but also the worm gear and the idler gear that drives it. The levelwind does nothing for you that you can't do yourself. Finally, if you want braking, look on youtube for how to install your own magnetic brakes. Magnets won't work on plastic spools or steel spools. If you have an aluminum spool, you are good to go. You may be able to make an aluminum end plate for your spool, if you can't get an aluminum spool for the reel. Generally you want magnets in pairs, with poles alternating, one N and one S facing the spool. The closer to the spool, the more braking. If you are a reasonably talented and creative tinkerer, you can make the gap adjustable with a knob. Otherwise just set it and forget it. You want N52 grade magnets. Less powerful mags won't do the job very well. N52 is the highest grade that is readily available. www.mcmaster.com is a good source. You can glue a steel washer into the end plate of the reel with epoxy or JB Weld, and adjust gap by using taller magnets or doubling up on them, or adding another washer. A good setup gives you results like this. Tie on a weight that you often use, Typically this will be 1/2oz to 1oz in fresh water, 2oz in most salt water, 4 to 8 oz for surf casting or deep water bottom fishing. Reel in so the weight is a few inches from rod tip, hold the rod horizontally at belly height, and release the spool. The perfect setting is where the magnets barely slow down the fall of the weight, and you get no more than a couple of slack turns on the spool when the weight lands. That level of braking will reduce casting distance a little, but will eliminate a lot of your birdnests and enable you to cast at night in the dark. Your thumb is still your ultimate brake. When casting for max distance you might want a glove on your casting hand, maybe with the fingers cut off but the thumb retained. Use the mate to that glove on your other hand, for guiding your line onto the spool if you take my advice and ditch the levelwind. As your skill improves, you can reduce the magnetic braking, or even eliminate it altogether. Check to see if your reel has centrifugal or mag brakes already installed. You can usually adjust either one to the lightest setting, and maybe take them completely out, for max cast distance. Reels with ball bearings that are kept well oiled with a fast oil, when set up and used correctly, can give you 100+ yard casts with the right rod, weight and line. Even the ancient Penn 209's from the 50's, properly maintained, (these are still being made, in China) can give you a 100 yard cast if you have developed good skills, with a good surf rod, and they use bushings, i.e. journal bearings, rather than ball bearings. A high quality ball bearing reel is capable of much greater distance. You will not see any competitive distance casters using levelwind equipped reels, or tightening the side knobs more than what is necessary to keep the spool from sliding side to side, or using any braking to speak of other than a well educated thumb. Nor will you see them mounting finely crafted reels on $99 walmart rods. A nice long rod with a good action that loads and unloads well, is just as important as the reel. My two surf rods are 15 footers. Most competitive casters use around 13' or 14' rods, and serious surf fishermen seldom heave a rod shorter than 10'. I like an 8' to 9' rod for freshwater casting, conditions permitting. When casting under a half ounce or so, a 6'6" Gx2 Ugly Stick will gitter done but you will be limited in your range, to less than what a well set up spinning outfit can give you. Try to get an 8 footer with medium weight and action if you want to be able to make longer casts. I am not sure what the world record distance cast is, but I am pretty sure it is over 300 yards. No, you will probably never achieve that distance, but now you know what is physically possible. The reasonably skilled caster who is actually fishing, should still be able to heave big lead for a max of 100 yards with a casting reel. Good luck doing that with spinning tackle. When you can throw a texas worm at a likely hangout for a lunker bass 50 yards away, your fishing buddies will think you are a god. It just takes the right gear, right setup, right techniques and lots of practice.

If you know what you’re doing when fighting a fish a straight up medium power rod is all you need to guide them around. I’ve done it to 15lb cats on a bass rod before. Seen guys do it on HUGE cats with light setups. It’s all in the skill. It’s just easier to do without experience on the extra heavy/heavy/Mh rods. I think Berkeley big game 7’6” or 8” casting rods for $20 make the absolute best beginner catfishing rods as they are great for everything from 5lb dinks up to big 50+lb flatheads. Capable of it all and a very competent caster. I usually run mine over weight and with line over the 30lb rating and it still casts a flying mile. Love mine more than I can explain especially considering I can buy one every month if I want to and not upset my wife 😊

I been using spinning reels my whole life and now I’m trying to figure out these bait casters out Does anyone have experience with the bait casters that have the magnets in them for casting?? Also my issue is if im right handed should i be using a left handed reel the only reason i ask is because being right handed thats your dominant hand and not using a level wind a conventional i have a hard time moving the line back and fourth with my left hand so it seems it would be easier using my dominant right hand for that

My dad bought a fourteen foot rod from a garage sale for three bucks that was missing some guides. This is his river fishing bank fishing rod. He doesn't really fish with it that much it's more of a joke. I think he has thirty pound mono on the reel.

I know this one is old, but it is one of the better ones. To soften the tubing, if you don't have a heat gun, just soak the tubing in very hot water.

I'm THAT hardcore spinning guy who just got his first baitcaster for catfishing and have backlashed it almost every other cast and about to shelf it for the season before I found this video. My dude.... ❤❤ I even made sure I had my line memory synced up with the baitcast reel cuz I didn't know. 🤣 Good to know; also for you for future if you follow the memory of new line with your spinning reel your GTG, it's only when you run it backwards (the spool goes the opposite way the line turns) then it trys to "pop off" when you open the bail. Thanks again homie!! 🎣
