I had aortic valve replacement on 11/06/2024. I was 58 at the time, a former 40-year smoker who had just come off a heart attack in July of 2024. I was discharged on 11/10/2024. My surgery was scheduled to be invasive, but due to complications, it led to major open heart surgery. From right side robot to breaking sternum. I needed my wife to manage prescriptions and some help in the shower the first few times. She was amazing it takes a village during recovery. I recommend preparing for the unexpected, family, wishes, etc, but not dwelling on the worst-case scenario. Remember, these surgeries are done 400-500 times a year with a less than 1% mortality rate. So, in almost every case, you're in good hands with your medical team. A recliner is a must and chest vest (orotonyx) on amazon or a pillow for coughing and sneezing if they crack your sternum. Your body will give you all sorts of signals. Phantom pain, numbness in surgical repaired areas, and if you had a mechanical valve get used to the ticking, which is the hardest for me. I use loud white noise while sleeping. As a side sleeper this was challenging, the recliner helped, but I gradually worked my way up to sleeping on my right side (recommended) and used an ice pack for irritating numbness and shooting pain under my right arm pit to sternum. It made a world of difference and reduced my pain. I go in and have INR checked to regulate my warfarin intake, so pricked fingers are regular. Do not skip these appointments! A mechanical valve requires a blood thinner for life, and while that may suck, you avoid any additional valve replacements and reduce the chances of heart attacks and block clots, which can be fatal. When my surgery changed from invasive to major, my time off did as well. You can expect 2 months for invasive and 3 for the latter. Dont rush yourself back. This is a serious surgical procedure, so being physically and mentally ready to return to work is important. Light duty or strenuous work. I had emotional episodes that included random and unexpected sobbing. This is expected, so dont feel like you lost your man card, men. For a while, it was the crying game and uncontrollable. If you're lucky and have a partner or spouse, try your best to give them some slack. You'll notice they will go overboard to help, and for me, the love that was shown was overwhelming, as I tried to say I could do it, her willingness to go the distance and mine to be self-sufficient led to some friction, followed by more crying. I guess what Im trying to say is let them know you appreciate them, love them dearly, and forgive them for doing too much. They were scared, too. I hope this information helps those who come here and are about to embark on their own journey. For me, I had peace because I knew I had a relationship with God, and whatever happened, I'd be fine because I felt I had no unfinished business if it was my time. Dont be scared, friends, it will all work out as intended, and I'll pray that those that come across this message while long winded, find it useful and helpful. I'll even throw in a free prayer for you. God bless!

I had a stroke 5 days after my surgery because the surgeon said it would add $10,000 to the cost of the surgery to use a filter that would have prevented it. Not using the filter cost significantly more than $10,000 and the use of my left side.

I have a congenital Bi cusp aortic valve detected with i was age 62. I was getting ego cardiograms yearly. I also have a heart murmur . Age 72, I had a lingering bronchitis,my doctor suggested a Lung CAT SCAN, lungs were strong, but pick up the Ascending Aortic valve turns out aneurysm 4.5. I had open heart surgery 2017.I have a cow valve, tri cusp and angioplasty repair with the ascending part of the aortic valve. Fast forward January 2024, same situation, Bronchitis/CAT SCAN, detected Aneurysm same place .I was scheduled for surgery NYU for prosthetic aortic valve replacement. Due to a hiccup with my insurance, surgery was put on hold. I research online and found a Cardiologist specializing in Aortic valve aneurysm, at Weil Cornell hospital nyc. he looked over my test results, explaining details documented after my surgery 2017 indicates no change today. He wouldn’t do surgery, suggested CAT SCAN every year. live a healthy, productive life.I am still teaching. My Heart, My lungs and Valve are doing fine. CN

I had a breast MRI which was barely tolerable. When my breast specialist wanted an MRI guided biopsy........I refused. She did an open biopsy under general anesthesia. Only way to go.

The "needle" that they are using in this video looks more like a trocar, not a needle. Much larger than a needle. I've watched other mri breast biopsy videos that show the amount of tissue actually removed during this procedure. The biopsies looked more like a lumpectomy.....ALOT of tissue is removed. I noticed in this video the amount of tissue was not shown. Personally, as a woman with spine issues, i cannot imagine that i could tolerate laying on my abdomen for that period of time. My back hurt just watching this video. Good luck to everyone who has this procedure.

How common are patients asking for IV sedation?
@emb7410 ай бұрын
This procedure is much more painful and uncomfortable than they discuss in this video. I’ve been through two of them- once at a Penn facility. When I asked, weeks before my second one, knowing how bad it was, for iv sedation, I was scoffed at. The lidocaine shot is not a pin prick. It is so shockingly painful that a technician is there to hold you down. You can see her in this video.

Why would the surgeon ask the patient how to go about fixing their heart valve problem!

To give them options to match their lifestyle. Some people don't want to be on blood thinners.

In the 21st century, this is as modern as it gets when it comes to collecting a semen specimen? I mean, in 1879, a WOMAN named Anna Baldwen obtained a patent for the first milking machine. In nearly 150 years since then, jacking off into a tiny plastic cup designed for urine collection is the best we can do? 🤦♂️
