Hello. Also as a Pianist, a lots of experiences of same mistake, I admire and even appreciate of your upload. Nowadays people are so easy to criticize others(even from fellow musicians), comparing live concert with studio recording, determine musicians by misnotes than musicality… this kind of ‘mistake’ should be considered more natural and with humor.

I admire you even more for sharing this 🥲 I’m still haunted from one of my performances of a duet I did, I played the violin solo part of the Bach double *on the cello* and, for the solo, I totally forgot what I memorized and started improvising (frantically trying to get to the specific note that would cue the violinist back in). I really appreciate how you just laughed it off, and continued with spirit. I had the opportunity to see you play Dvorak live and get to meet you afterwards 😌 I was so excitedly nervous I was shaking 🥹

You're very brave to show us this, and I must say you look super comfortable in terms of playing and memory etc. We all know a moment's enough to throw even the pro's off. As a 17 yr old I played the slow movement of Ginestera's piano sonata and got incredibly lost, but because the music was so "modern," i just made it up until I landed at a point I knew. You can do that with modern music; not so much with, say, Mozart. My teachers and I laugh about that to this day, 40+ yrs later.

Good for you, glad you overcame that moment and kept on going - and hopefully continued playing by heart and not being scared for the future...

Thank you for sharing your "human" moments. Otherwise, you are a godly cellist. Hope future technology allows us for a chip that can be planted in our brains so we do not forget music xD

@@bernie57 No I am serious. It does sound invasive, but don't you imagine there will be a technology where you can physcially increase the memory storage space for human beings? Anyways, I just want to be free of that anxiety caused by memory, though, that is not my only source of anxiety when I'm performing xD

interesting thoughts indeed - I say I might agree with you though, that it would take something away from the performance if we take away the chance of maybe getting lost. Indeed, we are humans, and failure and mistakes are part of the journey - not that we shouldn't strive for perfection, but in this case it's slightly different: I didn't get lost because I had poor memory, but because I tried something new, different (as I actually always try to do), and in this case I got carried away and indeed lost my train of thoughts. Even if I had the chip implanted in my brain I am quite sure in this moment I would have bypassed the chip for the sake of creativity and would have gotten lost in spite of it :)

I am an amateur cellist. I love these daily routine videos. I find them deeply insightful and inspiring since a lifelong professional cellist is still striving for perfection and “cleaning” his technique daily. I hope to gather the self discipline to put some of these into a daily routine of my own. So far, the Piatti 1 is regular. I played the Sevcik for nearly two weeks, but lost motivation. Feuillard 8 I played daily about 15 years ago, but nowhere near the accuracy and purpose. Thank you for creating and sharing.

As a non-professional cellist I had a similar experience playing Piatti No 7. Just all of a sudden had a blackout and found myself looping several times!🙃Thankfully nobody in the audience seemed to notice or care. 🙏It's good to know though that even professional cellist are human. 😉

They go through the first 21 of them. I felt yours with close up slow movements very helpful even though I haven’t gotten to 19 yet. Your playing in your concerts is wonderful!

Great! Wow, not seen that much that thumb position action the in fast section since D. Shafrin...Makes sense though, much less shifting! I've always loved this concerto, though a pity the orch. accomp. is so thick it can overpower the solo cello lines. One has to work a LOT harder in this work.

I had just finished performing the Saint-Saens cello concerto. The conductor asked me to play the last movement of a Mahler symphony which has a soprano soloist. This was after the intermission. I was sitting next to the first cellist. Just after the movement began, my A string broke. Without any hesitation I played all of the high notes on the D string. I’m always amazed at what you can do just to survive.

ha ha awesome way to keep on playing - the show must go on they say! I can't imagine the ledger lines needed for those notes though. one would think the composer would ask a violin to step in at that point, or a piccolo :) and the players behind you are amazed at notes you are getting out of that cello, not to mention the d string
