Mark, Thank you very much for your concise video. I have tried this process many, many times. I failed to understand the amount of time one heats the piece. I was overheating the piece. So thank you. Also your diagram was very instructive. Respectully, Mark Ehrmann

I tried this for my very first project. I used crazy 8 half round wire so I think it was a bit thicker. I really struggled to bend the wire with my pliers. I used the ones you used in this video. Then I sawed them from the top of the overlapped end to the bottom instead of the sides and that didn’t work out. So now how do I true up the edges? File them? I tried sawing through but I still see a gap. And the ends are d flat/square, kind of mitered or beveled.

I had a very long question typed but it disappeared here I go again i’m going over a used L 45 originally from Rio Grande and I noticed that the dial for the flame size is loose. It came out so if I’m not lined up properly with the little arrow, I know I could run into trouble but other than that, is this an issue appreciate any advice. Can’t wait to start using this torch. I’ll be back to watch all your videos. Thanks in advance.

Hi so to clarify- you didn’t use any solder? Thank you for pointing out the tips for hand-saving. My hands already hurt from holding and typing on my phone too much and other hobbies so as I start making jewelry, I’m highly focused on saving my hands.

Ty, I’m actually going to do my first art project showing people how art has helped me. To vets with ptsd. I’m not a vet- but also didn’t get what this video said- how the art lets me show people how I felt…. How I feel- or how to stop feeling- and come in the now. Much love- thanks for video.

Thank you for these tips. I've been smelting silver for almost a year and just made my first OZT of 14k scrap yesterday. I've melted many lbs of silver this year from a fortunate connection on CL with a cool dude from Buffalo who inherited a huge jar of silver powder from his grandfather. I've had many hours of research and hands on learning but you still taught me many lessons!! Great job.

Using a single (1") disc is very useful for cleaning up a meniscus without grooving the surrounding plate. I never use "never" or "always." 😅😊 Thanks, Mark. Ps. How about including more than one mandrel. Oh, and I can't believe you didn't mention the gasket/washer!!! Seriously? How is this possible? Its actually part of this exact process. Sigh....

Does sparex have the ability to etch the low firing enamels ?...I noticed on occasion a more dull look after having the piece sit in sparex when cleaning off the firescale.
@RioGrande19448 күн бұрын
Yes, The longer you keep the enamels in the pickle the more of a chance you have of etching the glass. Some enamels are more prone to etching than others and the leaded enamels are considerably more prone to etching on the surface. Try to keep your enamels in the pickle as short of a time as possible.

Thank you for this. I'm just getting into enamelling and I was making the mistake of applying the counter enamel first and then applying the flux and not getting it hot enough to eat the oxides. Kind regards . . . . Andy from the UK

Are you supposed to pickle it every time you heat it?
@RioGrande19448 күн бұрын
Yes. That step continues to remove copper from the surface as you prepare your silver.
@ChalleneVi28 күн бұрын
Thank you for sharing! Do you flux the backside since that is the side you are using your torch on? Thanks
@RioGrande19448 күн бұрын
You don’t need to flux the back but I would make sure to fire coat the entire piece to keep the firescale to a minimum.

Hi, thanks for the video :). My question is, can I change the hand pieces, from the regular handpiece to the hammer handpiece on my LX with the desktop dial control or does it only work with the foot pedal?
@RioGrande19448 күн бұрын
Yes you can use either handpiece on the LX motor. The dial will not cause any issues.

Viewer warning, some scenes may be distressing for some viewers. Scatching that opal made my heart lbeed... How do you recuperate the enlarged hole in the ring (after the broken drill bit)? That looked like a bomb crater..
@RioGrande194421 күн бұрын
The Agilo cabshine wheels will clean up a scratch on a cab very easily. If you have a pulse arc welder or a laser welder you can repair the enlarged hole. Hopefully the pilot hole is still small enough that you can go in and cut the seats for the stone without any issues.

They only sell the 3/32 collect hand piece now with the 1053 package. Is it possible to change the collect to a 1/8 with other accessories or attachments?
@RioGrande194421 күн бұрын
That particular handpiece only holds the 3/32” collet. There are other units that allow you to change collets. Since the 3/32 collet fits most of the burs we carry it is the most popular. Changing collets can be more of a hassle than its worth but with some units it is possible.
