That’s crazy that Dorothy didn’t run back inside the house, until the twister funnel was literally right in the backyard. Realistically, she would’ve been able to walk (and swept off her feet) in winds that strong. Also, the house crashing down from such a high altitude, would’ve been smashed into splinters. 😂

Reading up on this scene, apparently this scene was so well done and realistic that it was used by actual meteorologists for training because they didn't have good footage of actual Tornadoes in the wild. Keep in mind back then they only had photographs of tornadoes to work with, and that "they" includes the artists who made this scene possible. They even got the funnel clouds correct! Damn good scene and a greatly done movie that still holds up today.

From Northern Ireland (Belfast), and we haven't had a tornado since 1913, this is the first time I seen a tornado before and I was 6 years old, and 12 years later I am still in love with studying twisters

I'm not ashamed to admit this scene is still scary looking even as an adult. It's impressive how they made the tornado look so realistic with the limited technology for the time. I bet this looked even more fearsome on the big screen.

The main theme of The Wizard of Oz is the nature of self-reliance. In this scene Dorothy must walk TOWARDS the storm in order to reach her house. Whether intended or not, a hard lesson was learned when I first saw this film as a 4 y/o. I had recurring dreams about cyclones for years afterward.
