While his top and power are incredible he really doesn’t have the vocal dexterity to do justice to all this.

he later sang it complete at the Met. with Nilsson, 1965, he had sung it in 1949 with Toscanini live and complete for a very early TV performance , that early first TV Aida , did include Nelli and Valdengo.

Two of the greatest voices in the world of opera , together at the time , singing a complete live "Chenier" in the SF. Memorial opera house , S.F. Calif. both still in their Prime years , originally cassette taped in house and so not from a Brdcst. but in House tape and Rarely heard. the California public gave them great applause for this live opera performance from the complete opera they sang on that day. --- RIP. Tucker and Tebaldi

Tucker sang 55 times in both live complete opera's and concerts with Soprano Tebaldi but didn't ever studio record with her, most likely because they both usually sang for two different major record labels , Tucker mainly for Columbia and Tebaldi RCA, they got along very well on and off stage and when Tebaldi was asked in an American interview why she called Tucker MR. terrific she said "Because he was" (Actually he had once said to her before they sang a complete opera performance at the old Met. opera house, ) r She said "Richard, how do you feel tonight?" and he answered her, "Renata, I feel Terrific" so the title stuck with her, as she said, "He was terrific" but they didn't sing in Europe or South America together that I know of, Tucker in the 1960's and 1970's sang in both Italy and South America many times (besides his 1947 Gioconda in Verona Italy with a very young Callas, Verona was his Italian debut and also her's. ) P

Without a doubt he was America's greatest tenor at this time and one of the greatest Spinto's of all recorded time. (RIP. Richard Tucker 1913-1975. ) The recorded quality of this aria, taped originally in the opera house on cassette, is not in the best quality for a audio recording, (from the complete performance he was singing in 1965 in S.F. Calif.)

Were these performances recorded live or was the audio dubbed?
@shicoff1398
@shicoff1398 Күн бұрын
Firestone was "always live, not dubbed" and in fact sometimes you'd catch a singer in a usually minor mistake, once Leonard Warren (My favorite opera baritone) made a mistake and came in at the wrong time, (caught himself and stopped) and it is still on you tube, I think it was in the Carmen aria and is also on you tube, but Firestone was "Live" and a great show always with the best singers Etc..

@ I remember the Warren flub quite well. I was always amused by the "Oh, $#!t" expression he makes! I seem to recall a Melchior goof during a performance of "Some Enchanted Evening", but I can't remember if it was Firestone or the Bell Telephone Hour.

Saludos,

For me Forza was Tucker's "greatest role" and here his first radio Brdcst. of it, the complete role in 1952 at age 38, he took on that year, 1952, 3 new roles, Forza, Carmen and also Don Carlo as he then was becoming the great Spinto ending with roles like Canio, Juive and also Samson, all live. he also was great In Chenier , this role in both 1952 and again Brdcst. with him in 1956 he sang with the great leonard Warren

A role he never sang, but out of his 31 sung roles and over 700 performances at the Met. opera and hundreds in other major opera houses he did sing many Lyric roles such as Faust and Cosi , plus Marth a Rigoletto ,Boheme magic Flute (live) 0 and also and many opperetta r roles live in Chicago for the radio Chicago theater of the air over WGN radio there , and many of those shows are on you tube. over WGN radio Chicago He once told me after the Met. , Chicago was s his favorite operatic city too sing opera in and he was a very fine and famous Cantor who sang there yearly for important Holiday's , though he was born in Brooklyn NY. At age 84 I do not attend opera anymore, health issues and nobody of great interest for me anymore, but I'm sure some great voices are out there.
