I wonder if it's because the audience isn't playing along with him as much as he might have hoped. He has said that he doesn't think of himself as a performer so much as someone who goes out and plays with the audience (or something to that effect). He couldn't very well just cut it off, but perhaps he didn't want to spend a lot of time just "performing." Just a guess.

There isn't even a minute's difference in performance time between the two. Both are rushed, but I guess you have a pair of those rose colored glasses on.

this is not in the us. In Montreal, even if people know the movie, a bunch will have seen it in french so they don't know the lyrics like they did in the 88 version. Also, even if this is a well known movie and opening song, I don't think people in Montreal would have known every little bit of the movie like they would have in the us in the eighties.
