The role was composed for the South African colerature sopprano Mimi Coertze. Coertze sang the Queen of the night more than 500 times, mostly at La Scala. Coertze had the technique to take that high note an vuma out that vibrato. Good performance by Dumrau.

People below make unwarrented comments on her acting. This is a concert performance not a staged play. She captures perfectly the conflict of Cunegonde who is tempted to give up her true self for the venal temptaions of wealth and fame. What more can we ask than this conflict be presented in the performance which Damrau does .

Funny, I read all these comments about who is better, Damray or Dessay.. a veritable Double D battle. and yet, as of August 2017 only of these esteemed ladies can actually still sing this aria.

Well Dessay is older than Damrau... I saw both in concert at about the same age and I would say that Dessay only needed her voice when Damrau was a complete different experience.

Glitter and be gay, That's the part I play; Here I am in Paris, France, Forced to bend my soul To a sordid role, Victimized by bitter, bitter circumstance. Alas for me! Had I remained Beside my lady mother, My virtue had remained unstained Until my maiden hand was gained By some Grand Duke or other. Ah, 'twas not to be; Harsh necessity Brought me to this gilded cage. Born to higher things, Here I droop my wings, Ah! Singing of a sorrow nothing can assuage. And yet of course I rather like to revel, I have no strong objection to champagne, My wardrobe is expensive as the devil, Perhaps it is ignoble to complain... Enough, enough Of being basely tearful! I'll show my noble stuff By being bright and cheerful! Pearls and ruby rings... Ah, how can worldly things Take the place of honor lost? Can they compensate For my fallen state, Purchased as they were at such an awful cost? Bracelets...lavalieres Can they dry my tears? Can they blind my eyes to shame? Can the brightest brooch Shield me from reproach? Can the purest diamond purify my name? And yet of course these trinkets are endearing, I'm oh, so glad my sapphire is a star, I rather like a twenty-carat earring, If I'm not pure, at least my jewels are! Enough! Enough! I'll take their diamond necklace And show my noble stuff By being gay and reckless! Observe how bravely I conceal The dreadful, dreadful shame I feel.

Being An Anomaly I am very much aware of the fact she is 'in character'. But I meant her acting on stage in general. I don't like her general overacting. She has a nice voice, but I can't watch her perfomances.

Sorry Diana, but you are a copycat... This is a cheap copy of Natalie Dessay's version of Glitter and be gay of 1997. All that acting, the High F and the last A flat screaming were added by Dessay in that performance. Shame on you!

Amazing voice (admittedly better than Chenoweth, whom I adore), but I feel the acting was interpreted way to literally. It would be, IMHO, a bad performance in the context of the satire; I would opt to see Chenoweth any day if it were staged. Still Damrau has the powerhouse vocals, and still makes an exceptional performance for this piece.

Idk, Chenoweth's performance didn't seem to be very grounded in character to me-- rather, just a mishmash of gimmicks. She goes for a laugh by braying "Fraaaaance" and it gets a laugh because it's silly, but it's *Chenoweth* being silly. To me, Damrau's humor comes from Cunegonde expressing the contradiction between her upbringing and her genuine feelings about her situation.

Chenoweth is fantastic. She certainly was more entertaining than Damrau. However, I will say that her voice pales in comparison to Damrau's. This performance was amazing at the musical level, while Chenoweth's was amazing in the performance aspect of it.

Chris R. chenoweth isn’t just a comedian with an ok voice. she’s an actress who handles drama INCREDIBLY well, and can sing the house down. i turned this woman’s off very quickly. this is not her song. she’s incredibly talented but i couldn’t deal with her doing this unintelligible song that’s just her showing off that she can hit high notes. we already know that cuz we’ve all seen her in magic flute
