Wishlist definitely matter but these people are making it too simple. The percent it’s on sale matter as ton as does the base price. A $5 wishlist game and a $40 are completely different. Then you also need something on the page to be attractive for them to buy, regardless of why the wished in the first place. And if you have a huge campaign to wishlist that isn’t organic you’re not gonna see the same results as one that is.

Love to hear some random bum that never released a game or had any success elaborate, as if it's a scientific theory on how "wishlists are useless", when many successful people in the industry use it as a standard and a very good metric to acquire data (to measure efficiency, as the Steam platform is it's own ecosystem so you have to play "by the rules" unless you achieve viral success by other means like Vampire Survivors or Undertale etc). There is even some Polish publisher (Playway S.A.) that go in trouble with Steam for abusing the wish-list feature. They just popped like 3-4 games with "Coming Soon" and checked which had the most wishlists and media coverage. Then they would choose the most successful and scrap the other. They would repeat this process multiple times until the desired result was achieved and they "knew" what game would be a "sure-hit". And you can see that their simulator games are mostly a success: house flipper 2 (6.3k reviews), contraband police (15k reviews), thief simulator (28k reviews, sequel wasn't as succesful for obvious reasons) Surely some random discord bum must be knowledgeable and therefore correct about this topic. People listening to some discord randoms is a good explanation of overwhelming mediocrity of indie games - people try to "reinvent the wheel" and go "against the current" just to be met with obstacles that they can't defeat. Obviously over-reliance on everything is a burden that can drag you down, but if this guy humbled himself and get into a "learner" mentality he would probably achieve some new kind of Buddha enlightenment on video game industry.

Reasons I wishlist: 1. It looks interesting and I might pirate it later 2. Read 1 The only exception was hyperbolica, and only because it was an indie game, and I knew how much of an insane work the dev did.

the wishlist isn't really good for the initial release into EA the wishlist is good because it sends an email to all users that have the game wishlisted that it is on sale if it is 20% or more. it isn't meant to give you an exact number or approximation of how many will buy it into EA release or even 1.0. and because it was brought up in the video. it is the same with yt subs to video clicks. the big majority of creators doesn't even get 10% of their subscribers to watch their new videos. most of their views comes from people that aren't subscribed. i myself are subscribet to over 600 channels and I'm probably watching only 10-15 of them somewhat regular. the actual way of how to get game sells is by creating a game that people like enough to talk with others about it without someone telling that they should do that. if then enough people talk about it and show it to the streamers they like and the streamer finds it interesting enough to play, only then will the sales go up. the mouth to mouth advertisment is way more valuable than any ads you can buy or any number of wishlists. indi game devs basically win the lottery if they get streamers like asmongold to play their game and he likes it. it doesn't even have to be him. it can be any streamer with more than 1k viewers that is used to playing your games genre and style because s/he will have the audience that is actually interested in your games style. making a demo that shows enough of the game to leave a longing for more without spoiling everything is also really good for wishlist to sale convertions.

I wishlist games but they don't tell you the price. So sometimes it's "I'd spend $10 on that, then it launches at $30 -- welp, guess I'll buy that in 3 years." other times its "That's worth $10, and it launches at $5, easy day-1 purchase." and the third case: "That's gonna be $60, so I'll wish list it for when it's down to $20". I almost never buy anything over $20 at full price.

Important to note about this conversation between aspiring game devs: no development is happening. Y'all are putting the cart before the horse, and I suspect it is because your game sucks. Make something good and it will sell. No amount of sales trickery will make me buy a dogshit low effort game that belongs on albinoblacksheep or newgrounds

The way I understood wishlists is that if you have a lot of them, your game will be boosted in the algorithm. It tells steam your game is serious.
@blar21125 ай бұрын
its the ratio effort/reward Wishlisting is effortless, so the reward does not even need to be in the picture, but then as soon as there is a minimal effort, like a $1 price, the rewrd gets in to the picture, so if the "reward" promised on the wishlist is -50, a $1 is not low enough to get over it. What happens then is that gmes with a -50 "reward" are as likely as to be wishlisted as a 0 game, then once it gets a price tag, one will sell some while the other does not. So i agree with that dude, wishlists are worthless.

Reasons why i wishlist (Not all apply to all games): - Waiting for sale - Waiting for full release - Waiting for reviews to improve - Waiting for updates - Waiting for friends to get the game - A game looks interesting but i don't time to fully look at it yet Ultimately all of these mean almost nothing though if my backlog of games i own and haven't played yet is too big. It's an oversaturated market and i work full time. Should be called a 'Watchlist' because that's how i use it. Some games on my wishlist i will never buy. A sad reality for devs and i really sympathise. Good luck out there

Wishlisting a game basically means I will buy it once it goes on sale.... thats how I use the steam wishlist. I see a game I see is kinda interesting, but I dont feel like I have to have it, so I wishlist it and wait for it to go on sale, and if I have extra money to burn once whatever game is on sale I then buy it

I wonder if the wishlist conversion goes up with lower prices, and/or a more simple/easier onboarding experience [like a pre established genre].
@dovos85725 ай бұрын
I would expect that the wishlist conversion rate for lower priced games is actually lower. The reason is that you don't need to wishlist a game before buying it and many people just buy games that cost less than 10$ without wishlisting it. There is no need to wait for a sale if the peice is already lower than other games sale prices. Games that cost 30 to 60+$ have probably way higher wishlist to sale rates for the same amount of sales because of that. Direct buy sales are completely ignored in this conversation.

well if you get bad review, those wishlist not gonna buy it. Wish list is more a i will keep an eye on it, if price go low enough when i have money to spend i might buy it, But let's not forget that video game are a luxury and like i have a hundred of game in wishlist. It's just mean you are in competition with a hundred other game in my wishlist instead of being in competition with thousands. :/

completely disagree with the dude shitting on the wishlist. I cant always afford the games I want. Sometimes I wait for a sale. Other times if it releases in early access Ill just outright avoid it till its 1.0.
@mm.7865 ай бұрын
the thing is, wishlisting is a boolean value and sale done is another boolean, so with that two values alone you cant get any reliable data, because you got logically speaking just 4 combinations for all the interested or not in a game. And engaging is just a part of a sale, you can get enough engagement to wait for a discount or to buy on the spot, both are engaged enough to lets say wishlist but a 50% chance of get the wishlist and buy on the spot
@Frainkey5 ай бұрын
Wishlist is a reminder list. It’s like, I’m interested in this but I’ll buy it when I got the money and feel like it. And yea, a lot now may find interest in a game, wishlist it and never buy it. Using a wishlist as a measure of if a game will or won’t do well is stupid. Take actual surveys and get better statistics.
@Frainkey5 ай бұрын
Added, the variable about the wishlist is this. People are different and there are definitely a percentage of people who have fleeting interests in things. Attention divided, too many choices and will wishlist things, come back and not want it and not remove it from wishlist. Social media swipe left if you don’t like, swipe right if you like. KZbin, like, share, subscribe. The wishlist is essentially a LIKE button. Meaning that to those people, although I liked this don’t mean I even intend to buy. Weak maybe. If you really want to use wishlist stats effectively, only survey those who intentionally use wishlist as intended. It eliminates the variable.

I try to keep a balanced view on wishlists. I won't say they are completely useless nor that they are a make or break for your game's success. I think Thomas Brush has proven that a certain threshold of wishlists are a good indicator for sales. But then again he hosted an ex Halo dev that had 100k wishlists and a terrible conversion rate. What was the issue? The time between wishlists and the release. How many games have you wishlisted two or three years ago? When they release, will you be that excited than the day you said maybe I'll buy it if it comes out? No, exactly. So where wishlists come from and how many time between your spikes and your first release is super important. If you're a gamedev KZbinr making a game and you're not Dani, chances are your conversion rate will be bad. The reason being your viewer base isn't gamers, it's game developers. The day you release your game as a gamedev KZbinr, you're kind of saying goodbye to the content for that game. As for everything there are exceptions. Good luck to you all in your game projects, cheers :)

The wishlist is good for guaging potential interest in your game over time. If it's suddenly trending on social media you'd see a correlating spike in wishlists. Conversion data from it is worthless, though, and even harmful. That's because people add games to their wishlist for different reasons. Some people might do it with the intention of purchasing a game at launch but most just do it so they won't forget about the game later. Plenty of people add titles on impulse and never end up buying the game, even when it goes on sale. Wishlisting a game is the equivalent of writing the title on a sticky note and tossing it in a drawer with all the other sticky notes. It takes minimal effort, required no commitment, and at worst symbolizes an impulsive urge. It's decent as a metric to know if your game is trending but that's all it should be reliably used for.

Too many factors go into if people want to buy your game or not so wishlist numbers are effectively useless. It just gauges that x amount of people found your game vaguely interesting. I think the more unique your game is the better the wishlist to sale ratio
@davidanderegg12325 ай бұрын
It’s not useless at all, you just can’t do a simple conversion and call it a day. Knowing you’re gonna get somewhere from 1-30% is way more informative than 0-10000000 sales.

@@davidanderegg1232 But you don't know if you're even going to get 1-30% sales though. I guess it shows you the upper limit on how many sales you'll get, but it has effectively no meaning.

@@JohnSmith-kt3yy very high odds you are. Nothing in life is guarenteed but if the odds are high enough you treat it as is. In engineering 95% is as good as guaranteed. And in business even 10% chance is worth at least investing time in, given you can see 1000% profits on investments.
