Thank you for this much needed vid. I suspected this is the case with sidechain filtering, but having you explain it was so important to me :) Thanks so much

Hi, thanks for the video, I have a question, I'm not sure where the microphone should be placed at each point of the from and bottom measurement, should the microphone be moved away at some point?
@SPLMixingАй бұрын
@@davidpachecoegido If using the studio measurements, it's basically measuring each point of a 3D box that your head would generally reside within, so you will have to move it backwards at some point to capture points behind the head. Once they're all done, you are good to remove the microphone altogether.

Thanks for this. Doesnt sound like anything special. BTW, why do you use your monitors vertically? The waveguide and overall dispersion is inferior this way

@@isc4915 It's what measured more accurately and sounded the best to my ear. Horizontal felt artificially wide. Might be because I have a custom desk too, as I have very minimal reflections that the horizontal orientation would seek to remedy.

my initial prediction was A- oversampled D- oversampled X- oversampled curious to see if my guesses are right or not but in all of my answers for oversampled the transients felt slightly softer I would assume from the FIR linear phase oversampling that DDMF uses, and in the mixes i guessed were not oversampled I thought I could hear some aliasing in the guitar in particular.... time to see if i'm full of shit or not!

funny i could tell the difference but picked the non-over sampled ones!

How do you reduce bleed from drum cymbals in a live performance?

Within the drums alone? Gating helps, editing drum hits and sample replacement as a last resort.

Nice job)) how can i contact you ? I usually record my drums on 1 mic as multitrack but i never felt happy with the mixing and mastering on my drums sound . the engineers usually put another snare and kick etc . but i really want the sound of my drum recording to sound better and heavier without replacing anything
@SPLMixing5 ай бұрын
@@elyehage7776 Hi, you can contact me through my website. Word of advice: Mixing starts in the recording phase, Mastering begins in the mixing phase. Focus on the basics - i.e. great performance, well-tuned instrument, good recording environment, keeping recorded peaks under -10dBFS, good microphone placements, good phase relationships. Get those things right and you are 80% there before you open a plugin.

Yeah. I find it's a good compromise between finesse and speed. Establishes a shape quick enough that I don't lose perspective and then I get to indulge the fiddler in me (below) and the toddler that loves instant gratification (above). 😂 Great video by the way. Subbed. 👍🏼👍🏼

A - D - X are oversampled IMO. This is my first answer listening to from my tv. I turn on the monitors and I realised the opposite situation! Great video!
@Jooj21127 ай бұрын
I try to do bottom up as much as I CAN, but I certainly do not exclude the idea of top down. Most of the times I see myself doing BOTH, and at the end of the day, if you reached the sound you wanted you got the job done. You cant listen to a track and guess if it was top down or bottom up mixed (that doesn't even make sense). So everything is valid to achieve the desired sound.
@SPLMixing7 ай бұрын
Personally, I'm dead against the top down, having tested the results of both approaches. Getting it right from the source is my primary focus and bottom up mixing aligns with this philosophy for me.

The oversampled ones sound so much more open. Like there’s room to put your feet up in the mix and stretch out. A, D and X sound more cluttered. Not bad but I definitely prefer B C and Y. Great tests!

Yes but inturn more 'Perceived' low end is coming thru. Pretty sure Pro's understand this
@SPLMixing9 ай бұрын
What I explain in the video has nothing to do with perception, it's about understanding the fundamentals of how a compressor works. The resulting tone could skew more low-centric, and in most cases it will, but this depends on how the compressor is reacting to the bandwidth limited signal in the sidechain. Not all compressors will react the same way and it depends greatly on the nature of the signal that's left in the sidechain. But don't believe me, we just met, try it out for yourself.

Big thanks for this video! It was pretty easy to hear the oversampled ones (B, C, Y), However, since I have been hoarding the "analog modeling" plugins recently, this is a very good reminder about the actual sound quality that can be achieved. Thank you 🙏
