I bought the fishtail set and was actually pleased. They needed quite a lot of sharpening, but were decent tools for the price. The problem starts where I got the 12 chisel set. Of the 12, two were serviceable tools (the flat and the skew). The v-tool needed the cutting edge ground off and redone, it was so out of whack. The gouges had such steep bevels on them that they needed to be held almost perpendicular in order for the cutting edge to contact the wood, which means that all you are doing is smashing. and not cutting. Three of the gouges fell out of their handles. What they are is chisel-like objects. I've been carving since 1972, and I can't recommend these.

I hand carve wood and just received delivery of the 12 piece set last week. I found all are good quality and solid. Easily used as a hand carving tool or with a mallet. The grind on some is a little rough and all need as least stropping before use. Having said that, more expensive tools such as Kirschner or Pfeil are the same and need fettling before use. Would I buy the Schafer again; definitely yes.

Hello, thank you for your videos, they are a great inspiration to me. I don't understand why you don't have visualization, you deserve it. May I ask you what gouges measures you have on the table? I would like to start but I only have a few palm gouges. Considering the prices, I would not want to buy gouges wrong or that I do not need. Thank you

Most have said the chisels that come with it are marginal and not very sharp. I would go with Flexcut chisels and save some money and get just the handset without the chisels.
@MadcarverWoodCarvings Жыл бұрын
The chisels are professional size chisels, and come factory sharpened. In my opinion, they should come a bit sharper and that's something that Schaaf should work on. However, the chisels are true pro sized and that is something that Flexcut does not sell. The work you are doing could render some of the tools unusable but I use all of them with the work I do.

Need some help considering these are expensive so I want to get it right the first time What’s the best two individual ones I should get for character carving? Or should I get a bur kit? Also what grit strengths? Thank you great video btw !
@moonolyth2 жыл бұрын
I would probably get an extreme course and the fine round. You won't go wrong. these are what have been used for many years for copy carvers or duplicators. I say round because you'll end up getting any way to gouge out large surfaces anyway.

I have some of these and they are among the best that I own, including the so -called "high end" brands. After getting this set I was so impressed with them that I went on to buy the additional sets they sell and have been tickled to death with how well they work after initial preparation. I can't say enough good things about the tools and their customer service department.

I see the lighting for shadows is very important. How do you control the dust?
@MadcarverWoodCarvings2 жыл бұрын
Yep. Lighting and where it reaches is crazy because shadows give the work a bit of realism. The dust is blown away and swept up later. Not the best system but my workshop is small.
