I remember my first evening spent on deck of USS Nimitz walking across the fantail and seeing my first image of an F-14 parked on fantail, six tie down chains securing it and the sun setting directly behind it with an orange glow leaving it in a dark brown shadow. The wings set to stow position giving this appearance of a fly watching me as I walk by. And I was able to spend the next 3 years with my name painted on the nose wheel well door. The best 3 years of my life...I'm 64 now and every day I think of how fortunate I was to be a part of the best plane ever created..... machinist mate 3rd class/ plane Capt. VF-41 USS Nimitz. 78-81...

At the time, even with the persistent engine problems that were never resolved (costs of upgrades were deemed to prohibitive) the F14 was the best of its design. Because of lessons garnered during the whole program, start to finish, has brought us to the USN premiere fighter aircraft flying today, the F18 Hornet.
