Yeh Yeh i know the raptor is better and all but this Jet was the real deal .. it could turn like hell and was loud and sexy - i know it doesnt matter now - but these engineers back then knew their sh!t and the pilots were absolute masters .. take your brain back into the time and try to understand what it must have been like developing and flying the tomcat back then ...

I have a buddy who retired from Navy (aviation). He told me the F-14 near end of service life was a real PITA to maintain and that although it was an excellent aircraft a lot of Navy personnel were glad to see it retire. Notably, the F-14 as an airframe saw very very little combat. I just find that ironic given how significant it is in military history and pop culture.

You can thank Iran for the destruction of one of the modern wonders of aviation. So sad that those younger than the 80's era will never get to see the beauty and grace, followed by the downright power and speed of the F-14. Like the F4U Corsair, it has it's own distinct sound when on approach. It looks like a bird of prey when it has the wings out, dancing across the sky, and then a Peregrine Falcon when folded back, flashing across the sky. I still remember back in the 90's when I was getting my dog from his kennel in Algonquin on a heavy overcast day, and I heard the sound of a Tomcat. Then a break in the clouds, and the boom of afterburners as the Tomcat fly out of the clouds 400' above my house with the wings spread, the burners lit. A sight etched in my mind forever. This was when NAS Glenview was still in operation.

I used to watch them take off and land at the Grumman plant in Riverhead. Sometimes they would see us out there and give us a high speed fly over. Full afterburner. My dad worked for Grumman.

I always wished Grumman had developed a follow on aircraft based on the F-14 but made along the lines of the Su-27. Fixed sweep wings like the Su-27, modern digital avionics, and the main version would be single seat because the advanced avionics would eliminate the need for a RIO. Might make a great what-if model. Saw a what-if Blue Angels Tomcat at a scale modeling event. Looked beautiful in the scheme, of course, with the polished silver leading edges of all the flying surfaces.
@RobertGraziose4 күн бұрын
I saw that what if model also. My dad worked for Grumman. I used to watch them take off out in Riverhead. Grumman Propose the super tomcat but never went.
@brinsonharris98164 күн бұрын
@ If the one you saw was in 1/32, that’s the one I saw. Absolutely beautiful in BA colors. I have a big stash of kits and the old Revell 1/32 F-14 is among them. That one would be a great candidate to reinvent without the wing sweep, single seat and of course the later GE engines. Alas, work keeps me from the fun plastic these days. I remember Tomcat-21 that had the big model that showed the proposal. Frameless windshield was only one of its cool factors. Cheney made sure that project was killed and the Super Hornet was forced on the Navy & Marines. Read a quote from him dismissively grumbling that the Tomcat was “1970s technology.” Well, yeah, but so was the legacy F-18 before it was redone as the Super Hornet. I’ve always suspected he had friends at Boeing and not at Grumman.
@RobertGraziose4 күн бұрын
@brinsonharris9816 He didn't like Grumman because an Admiral said that we only need Grumman. And they had an aircraft Carrier with only Grumman planes on it. He felt they were being arrogant, but it wasn't Grumman that was being arrogant it was that admiral. Then Northrop in a hostile takeover put the final nail in. My brother was working there when he was laid off, because of the takeover. My dad had long since retired.
