@@dantecorbett2221 Probably not. These are two different machines. A computer with an RTX 2070 Super was probably made for gaming. The MacBook Pro is a highly capable light weight laptop that can also play FFXIV. If performance is what you want, go PC. The point of this video was to tell people who want / own MBPs and don’t want a PC, that FFXIV runs similar to that of a console.

I have had a very different experience. I have a Macbook Pro M3Pro 18GB system that I bought last year. Before the new expansion the game ran perfectly fine without any issues. However since DT I have noticed horrid frame stuttering regardless of graphical settings. The stuttering often drops things from 60+fps to single digits. I also have noticed what looks like a memory leak as i've seen the game slowly use up to over 64GB of memory. Stuttering happens right on login and depends often on where you're looking. It doesn't matter if its older or newer zones, or if they're populated or not, though its worse in newer areas. It simply has not been playable on my mac and am stuck waiting to see if Square fixes it. However it seemed to actually get worse since the most recent patch. I spent all of early access and days beyond just trying different graphical settings and even reinstalled the game to no change. Iv resorted to playing on a windows laptop which is less powerful than my macbook but runs the game perfectly fine. This is my first mac and I miss playing ffxiv on it, I hope Square fixes it.

THAT SUCKS! I’m guessing you already switched settings to standard…. What what I’ve learned in the comments is, there are server side implications to this problem. Did you try changing Data Centers? If in the US, go to Dynamis and pick the one that starts with an H. Just to test it. It might be the world you are in… Aether was my home world and was really congested and laggy around launch.I left and have since returned and things are running smoothly. Let me know if switching data center temporarily works. Should be night and day. Follow up. Let me know.

@@vithedesigner From what little gamedev experience I have I doubt its that. High population would effect fps in heavily populated areas and if data is being live streamed from the server then the fps should lvl out after a short bit. The game of course runs far better in cities in the middle of the night when barely anyone is online. My server is US but queue has been as tiny as pre dawntrail. I did figure out how to activate the Metal Performance Hud via the terminal to get a more live readout of performance and while weirdly during this recent test the game ran much better with me having done literally nothing with nothing having updated...it still had areas with stutter with the games memory slowly raising. So there seems to be an issue with a memory leak that seems to sometimes happen and not happen. With the stuttering accelerating the leak. Its possible Square did a silent patch that helped or maybe there is a server side issue. Something might have updated and I didnt notice or maybe the game has a shader cache it needs to build. Really cant tell since I dont know. I just know there is a memory leak that is sometimes meh and sometimes horrid and there is often stuttering which gets worse as it progresses. I did though try playing on my dynamis character to see if there was any difference and at least in my case there is not. I have noticed in the official forums a lot of people reporting stuttering on windows as well so...*shrug* I just hope it gets fixed somehow. For now I guna stick to my windows laptop.

As someone who used to build custom gaming PCs for gamers on a commercial basis (including many FFXIV players), let me share some input FFXIV 2.0 (from ARR until DT) at its core is a old engine, created back in 2013 when 4-core CPUs were the top-of-the-line and most poor players had dual-core Intel Core 2 Duo machines from 2010 or older. So it was never coded to be very multi-threaded. You will notice on many Windows PCs, whenever you encounter a large crowd (Sat night in Limsa Lominsa Aetheryte Plaza, or hunt trains with dozens and dozens of other players etc), you will notice that 1 or 2 cores are 100% loaded all the way and the rest are either doing nothing or much less % load I suspect what is happening on your M1 is that you have 8 cores, but the game is really only making full use of 1 or 2 of them in large crowd situations. And when this happens, the CPU's single-core speed becomes the bottleneck, not the GPU (dont be surprised to see GPU being nothing near 99% utilized in this situation) Plus, FFXIV as a x86 game is likely running thru Rosetta 2 which is going to hit overall performance pretty hard i think especially in single-core

Wow, so FFXIV was not coded in a manner by which we would benefit from recent multi-core chip advancements. That is interesting. To your point, this is a 10-year-old game. Low key I was hoping that FFXIV was going to end and that they would give us a new MMO. I love the game, don't get me wrong but... this thing is old. lol. Thanks for sharing. Because I was really trying to figure it out, I would have expected the fans to be on full throttle and for the game to be cutting up if the machine couldn't handle it. Instead, all we get is lag that’s just annoying enough to bother you. I appreciate the inciteful comment.

Are you playing using XIV on mac/xivmac? I tried it out on my M1 Macbook Air was pretty astounded at how well it ran...the devs of that project are wizards (don't think it's a good idea to do this for long periods of time, buuuut it can comfortably manage short login tasks) From the time I spent in the discord, I think it can improve the experience a bit

Hi Ryan! I appreciate the comment. Like I said in the video, my wife and I ran FFXIV for 20 hours on launch day using my M1 Mac Book Pro Max and her M2 Mac Book Pro. The one advantage we have is the fans in our machines. The MacBook Airs can run it, but it's the cooling that becomes a problem (no fans). If you are on an Air, I agree, long term might not be a good idea. Sofar, the Pros are running it well.

It is a client that was and is still used by players since there was no official one at the beginning of apple silicon it allows also people to play on mac with the windows or steam version of the game, it works (need to compare now that the big crowd is gone) better than the official and it worked better when dawntrail released you can easily find it by typing XIVformac

It's a mix of hardware limitation and how the game is written. namely a bandwidth limitation of the CPU. This also happens on my PC Laptop, not so much on my desktop (more on this later) but even there is not perfect. although it will not look like that your CPU is maxed out, but it has to do with memory bandwidth speed between the CPU, Cache and Ram. The speed between CPU and it's cache, for x86 you have level 1, 2, and 3 cache (For the ARM chip what you are using i'm not sure how many cache levels there are but doesn't matter) they are small in size but they are real fast much faster then your RAM. but pushing or reading data to RAM costs multiple clock cycles longer then compared to the CPU cache it takes time and thus causing delay. This is also not a new issue however with FFXIV, this happens for years like for my server, phoenix, Limsa will take a considerable hit on performance, with the amount of people there. it might be a optimisation problem of the game it self. if you are in tuliyollal, try to walk to the big bridge your framerate will improve as it is unloading the people. also using a 3rd-party plugin to hide players also increased the framerate. My desktop, does have a far larger cache then my laptop, i have the X3D variant Ryzen CPU, and it has massive impact on situations like this. The CPU is waiting less for getting data from RAM or writing to RAM because it can fetch the data from the cache, increasing framerate

I think it’s the congestion. I’ve experienced the same on early access. Should get better with time. In the less congested areas, it runs great. Been a bit better today. Give it a week. Working on a video but it’s to early to tell.

Hey brother great video! I’d recommend checking out how to set up cross hot bar properly with controller (im a controller player too) you can double tap each triggers for two top bars and hold both triggers down for two more (I usually merge the double hold down for a single bar and have mount, tank stance and sprint plus L On it so i dont have to figure out which I need to hold down first) gaming FFXIV with a controller is great when you can actually use the Cross Bar effectively.

I'v been playing FF XIV since ARR in PC,and really can't think another way to play it. I tried with controller on ps4 and ps5 and played on steam deck,but the confort of the keyboard+all the support software that is only on windows that makes the life at the game soo much easy. with controller I've managed to do only dungeons and gathering content oh and if you want it in a laptop,there's much better optons in pc. for example I have a rog flow x13 that can run perfectly fine the game at 1080p more than 60 fps. is lighter than a macbook air,performs better and has a simmilar price. onestly,apple can do a great job in a lot of things,but gaming is not one of them

I think the PC gamers are missing the point here… People don’t just buy computers for gaming. There are a ton of startup founders, creative professionals and college students who like Apple… Most people either pic Mac or PC. Since M1 arrived, things have been changing… this video is for the emerging market of Mac users who traditionally couldn’t run games like FFXIV. Apple doesn’t have to deliver PC gaming computer performance on mass…. If it can consistently provide competitive console level performance, they win…. Only the vocal minority cares about high end performance, mods, parsers and 3rd party add ons. Most people just want the game to work every time they turn it on….

I randomly got this video recommended. Here's some constructive feedback. The background music is way too loud and it's distracting, especially since it has lyrics. Worth mentioning in the video is that a Mac is a poor substitute for the console experience. You get an objectively worse experience than playing the game on a PS5/XBSX and you're also missing out on all the modding and addons you can get playing the game on PC. The benefits are portability and ease of use but it is probably one of the worst ways to experience the game.

As a PC user, you might not fully appreciate the context of the video. Most people use either a PC or a Mac. Gaming PCs are versatile, serving both professional and gaming purposes, whereas Macs typically do not cater to both needs simultaneously. Consequently, most Mac users opt for consoles for gaming. This goes double for non-PC Final Fantasy fans. The Apple Silicon community represents an emerging market in gaming. Many Apple Silicon owners buy their laptops for work, school, or content creation / creative work and prefer not to own PCs. This video aims to inform them that the best MMO on the market runs great on Mac. I am not trying to get PC users to switch… As a console gamer, we don’t have access to add-ons, mods, etc, so why would I mention those? The Mac experience runs just like a console: Reliable with the added Portability, Track Pad, and Keyboard.

True but here’s the thing… people love their Mac’s… honestly if it’s about money, you can run this on an XBOX Series S…. People who buy Macs don’t do it for gaming so this scenario becomes a pleasant surprise when the find out that they can. I appreciate the comment.

Such a cool video! Love hearing your families experience with XIV and differece systems to play on. I have been a PC FFXIV player for about 5 years now and I do play FFXIV on my M2 Macbook air for evernything outside of battle content. I have leveled my island, worked on housing, done crafting and gathering. Its great for working on quests and non intensive content. Personally I still prefer to do my raiding on my PC but that is just a comfort preference. Hope you and your wife have a great time in DT!

Just built my first pc for dawntrail as my old 1050 laptop wouldn’t be able to run the new graphics update. I was so happy the moment I set everything to max 😂 its like night and day, an entirely different game, no slowdowns, no fps drops, and finally frontline and pvp doesn’t look like a stop motion movie 😂. @@The_Lesser_Evil I have a starforge PC with a 4080 and an M3 Macbook Air. Game runs great on both. In most instances with the M3MBA I'm well above 60fps. ALSO, you don't really want FF14 to run above 60fps bc the physics are tied to the framerate. Apple's M chips are actually kinda crazy. I used to hate on apple HARD because they couldn't keep up with PC power but with the rate they are going the M4 or M5 will likely be almost on par with conventional high end gaming PCs.

While I primarily play XIV on PC, I've got it working on my M3 MacBook Air for when traveling. I 100% agree with you that a MacBook Pro would be better, not only for the higher performance but also the cooling solution. Having said that, I've not had any issues running it on the Air at a slightly lower graphics setting and capped at 60fps to not over tax the hardware for wastes frames. System load generally sits between 80-90% on the GPU. Machine does get warm but far so good with no issues.

Same here, M3 Max MBP running the Mac version through XIVonMac. Consistent 60fps at 4k/native and max settings. If I want 120fps I drop the resolution to 1440p and turn off tessellation

@@domni2392 128GB for running LLM's, shouldn't need more than 16-32GB to run the game. Although the game's recent graphical update will make it perform slightly worse than before update. Nothing that lowering settings/dynamic resolution can't fix :)

i play FFXIV on my macbook pro m1 max @ 120 fps on my 4k tv, you just need to update ur hdmi cable, and let me tell you is a day a night diference!
