Non-commercial bug sprays are better for the bugs that are good for a garden like bees and butterflies, lady bugs and preying manits.

Looked like not using a trellis and letting the squash wander might have lowered the risk of powdery mildew. Is that possible?

You were supposed to tell us how to grow the plant. But all you did was yap, yap, yap. You should have shown the step-by-step from seed to planting in a pot, how deep, how much water etc. etc. etc.

What size pot are you using to grow your cape gooseberry?
@jonsveggiegardendiary5691 Жыл бұрын
I normally use pots 400mm high and 500mm wide but I'm not really sure if that's optimal as I just picked them pretty randomly.

@jonsveggiegardendiary56912 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't know as I haven't planted there but it's definitely worth giving it a try. I believe the climate is quite dry so you may just need to water more frequently than I do here in Gauteng.

Hi June, I wouldn't give up on it just yet but it can't hurt to plant another one and see what happens. I did once have a Gooseberry plant that died, which made me feel despondent but I realised later that it was just bad luck. Does it get a lot of sun? Which area do you live in?

It's crazy but I often find them in there near the bottom, in the section that's composted. I would have thought that the heat would kill them. Although now that I think about it, its normally the adults I find in there. Hope I didn't cook this one alive.

I have found that once the peel gers thick enough the flies cannot sting them. Maybe remove one or two bags from larger butternuts to test.
@jonsveggiegardendiary56913 жыл бұрын
Hi Hein, I definitely agree with you. Sometimes I have to remove the bags as the butternuts outgrow them. The chances of being stung do seem to be less when they're big and when they do get stung, it seems to cause less damage.

Thanks for the video. How many females can one male pollinate?
@jonsveggiegardendiary56913 жыл бұрын
It's a pleasure. That's a very interesting question. I have only ever used one male for one female flower as I usually get far more male flowers than female. In theory though, I would imagine that one male could pollinate many females as natural pollinators like bees only carry a little at a time. It's worth testing.

Thankyou this has been very helpful, couldn’t understand why I had so many flowers that fell off without fruiting! I think all the flowers that have opened and fallen off the plant have been males as they didn’t have the swelling underneath as you’ve shown here. I did notice a bee or two, not often though, buzzing around in them but obviously the plant hasn’t yet had female flowers so no pollination. Now I know what to look for I will hopefully distinguish the flowers properly to help it along with hand pollination. I don’t have a clue what squash is growing as it seeded itself from the compost! Again very grateful to you for showing the difference and how to pollinate these flowers....x

Hi Jon, what's a organza bag made of, looks like a really fine mesh.
@jonsveggiegardendiary56914 жыл бұрын
It's a thin nylon weave fabric. I've seen them at a lot of gift shops. I've bought them from the party place in Woodmead and Bruma oriental city and I think crazy store sell them. The only challenge is finding big enough ones. I sometimes have to cut them off the butternut once they get to a certain size.

@@jonsveggiegardendiary5691 iesh ok thank you ... we don't have those shops in Zim, but I'll make a plan ... basically something that will allow air to move but stop the fly getting to the nut ... copy thank you
