As a former Royal Engineers officer, let me just correct you on one small detail regarding Chard. Lt Chard was indeed in command but he wasn't there to build a bridge, he was overseeing the ferrying of some equipment over the river by raft. With him was Driver Robson, the only other Royal Engineer present. They had a lucky escape as the other members of their field company were all killed at Isandlawana. A nice looking game, thanks for keeping the history alive

Okay, I don't know how I missed this video a year ago but thought I'd comment regardless. First, your figure painting is gorgeous in the extreme. I think the scenario & army lists gave an overwhelming advantage to the British. Giving the strongest infantry unit in the Game Lists of all Countries, possession of the primary objective from the get go is ludicrous. Any expectation that the Guard or anyone else prying them out of a fortified position is fantastic thinking unless your playing with loaded dice. Putting my favorite cavalry unit of the entire period, the 5th Lancers, against the Cavalry unit with the STRONGEST STATS in the entire game, British Household Heavy Dragoons, is either insanity or malpractice. I still love your table & figures , also your camera work outshines any other battle reports.

Thanks for most of your comments 👍🏼 I think this was one of my earlier Naps games. If you watch the later ones you’ll see I painted up a lot more French to balance things out. Also remember though, battles are NEVER balanced. It’s always interesting to see how each side will get on when disadvantaged. On this particular one the French had a tough task. Try watching ‘Through the Mud’ and see how rough the British had it on that one. Thanks again for watching 👀

Another visually spectacular video Drew. Glad to see the technologically inferior natives triumph in this asymmetrical combat which is so often, embarrassingly, the opposite. Was really impressed by how much realism was added to the terrain by the simple addition of a few bits of gravel or moss bits scattered about here & there among the teddy bear grass. Thanks for all the work it takes to make one of these. I hope Dave wasn't put off by his dice luck being so rubbish.

Hey Drew, thanks for the reply and explanation of the 95th's unlikely ability to fight off 3 battalions of French regulars (at a figure ration of 20 to one that's 1,440 Frenchmen) which is an example of why I think the 95th are way too strong in Black Powder, possibly to conform to the ficticious adventures of Mr. Sharpe, and why I hate the 95th. Conversely, I think artillery is far too weak ( I admit my prejudice as a former gunner ) feeling an extra dice should be added to each of the distance factors. You only have to read a few in person accounts of the Napoleonic period to see the paramount importance of the guns in this period. The willingness of all sides to throw hundreds or thousands of troops, and so casualties, at these weapons makes it too clear, as does the emphasis on how many pieces were won or lost in determining victory. Seeing the news videos of the present European conflict demonstrates how very little that has changed over the centuries. I was able to see " L' Espionage " just before your reply and of course greatly enjoyed the French victory. Wasn't sure what happened to the the 2 Dragoons though (brave lads), guess I'll have to watch it again. Haven't had a chance to watch the Zulu battles yet but look forward to them. Sorry for this late comment to your reply, I'm working from a new (to me) mail program & didn't see your reply in a separate folder from "inbox" till recently. Stay well.
@TwisstedSage
@TwisstedSage Жыл бұрын
Admittedly I loath the 95th, nevertheless, it seems like they had an inappropriate amount of power out of a built up area. Since we didn't get to see the shooting rolls I don't know for sure but I believe shooting from a built up area is rather like shooting from a square in that the available dice must be distributed to all sides of the BUA as with a square. So it would be impossible for all 3 or 4 dice of a unit to shoot out of one side of a BUA or square, ie one or two shots per side. It seems like the casualties the Rifles were getting per turn would be outside the possibility of this rule. This, added to the minus numbers for the hard cover would make it virtually impossible to push them out of a BUA and lead to the result of one smallish unit breaking multiple battalions, yes ?
@Drewheed1
@Drewheed1 Жыл бұрын
The compound was split in two and each contained one unit of 95th. Each unit get a maximum of 2 shots which can be split per face of the compound (as with square). As they are sharpshooters though they get one re roll automatically. Also if they are shooting at attack columns then the fire counts as enfilading fire so all misses are re rolled. Hopefully that explains the high hit rate. If you are wanting to see a French victory then I recommend going to watch my latest battle rep, “L’Espionnage!”

Lovely game, not just because the French won! Your armies are really looking great. I’ve yet to play a Napoleonic game that gave representative power to the artillery, as it had in the period. Indeed, I’ve only seen one game on line of many, where a battalion was broken by artillery and that was using “Black Powder”on a Perry Bros. size table which may be the answer. (Basement 1803 on KZbin). Bit sorry to see a different period just when you’ve gotten both adversaries up to a good game standard but I understand how tiresome these big battalions can be after you’ve painted a couple of hundred of the same uniform. Good luck & I’ll be watching for your future videos.

Not into "playing" but I love to paint miniatures and up until now "only" painted figures from Revell, Italeri and Zvezda. But I am very interested in the miniatures of Warlord Games / Perry Miniatures. However what I noticed when looking through their catalogue is that most line infantry are in marching position. A few "shooters" here and there. Only the ones from the American War of Independence seem to have "firing ranks". Are the miniature sets really that one sided when it comes to poses? I don't mind not having any special poses like waving or pointing figures, but having almost none shooting (kneeling or standing) is a big turn off. Can someone here enlighten me if my perception is correct or am I missing something? I know some miniature sets allow for different poses/stances when assembling the figures; is this the same here?
