Can someone please tell me more about the kind of soil to use? Maybe Brand or a link? There are so many, and it is really confusing. TIA! :)

Yes, it can be confusing because there are absolutely so many to choose from. However, this time of year (winter) the options in the stores are far fewer. But here's what I know. Ideally choose a bag that is called "potting soil." Don't choose seed starters or top soil. If you can't find any potting soil in the stores you could try the "Raised Bed Soil" because it is pretty close to potting soil. Choose a potting soil that does not have anything added to hold moisture because your roots could rot if they stay too wet. Organic potting soil is fine but not necessary. Any brand is fine. Even the cheap ones. You are going to be transplanting out of the jugs while the plants are quite small so they won't need much in terms of nutrients while they are in the jugs. For this reason you don't need potting soils with fertilizers added. There is a Winter Sowers Facebook group with very helpful people if you need immediate answers to questions.

Layely, I have been watching lots of tutorials on winter sowing and find yours to be very comprehensive and clearly demonstrated. The narration is clear and concise with a soothing voice. You cover everything in such a short video. I am, for sure, saving this video and mow I feel more confident sowing. 😉🍃

Thank you!! Im all about helping the wildlife!! I planted a dying xmas tree from walmart in my front yard after xmas and it struggles at times but I baby it so it has to take off this spring! It upset me so much that walmart had a huge shippment of these small trees maybe 12in tall. They were all dying and not one worker was watering them. They even had watering cans from the summer laying around. All them trees just wasted. I did save one tho! I did it for the birds mostly and squrls. You are soo correct on mothers day NOT being our last frost. I had to take in and out 6 hanging baskets for a week. Everything that you said in this video was perfect! I do beleive also that humans are not supposed to kill other life 100% no hunting for food. Theres way to still get meat and not takibg a life! I dont flush insects now I put them outside. All these utubers leaving there jobs to make a homestead ?????? If utube didnt pay these channels they never woyld of left there jobs. They baby there animals and than kill them for food how inhumane!! One video had there kids watchibg as they thru there own chicken into boiling water than into a thing to remove feathers. I couldnt belueve utube let this slide? I think utube should shut these family channels down!! They dont work and they put there kids lives on there? Anyways thank you for being you and I hope people stop killing animals! They feel and have the ability to connect with humans! I plan on planting tons for as long as im living!!!😁🥰❤💚💜💙💛🧡🦊🦝🐈🐈‍⬛🐕🐵🐴🦌🦌🦌🐖🐄🐄🐰🐰🐿🐿🐿🦫🦔🐨🐻🦨🐓🦆🦃🐦🐦🐛🦋🐞🐠🕷🐝🐸🐍🦉🐻‍❄️🦛🦏🐀🐹🐁🐭🌿🌲🌳🌴🌵🪴🌱🌱🌱🌱

When do you start?
@youthformonarchs

The traditional kick-off date is around the time of the winter solstice, Dec 21st, but really you can start well after that. The main thing is to make sure the seeds get the required number of days of cold moist stratification, and that will be stated on the seed packet. I usually start in mid January for perennials that require cold moist stratification, but have started as late as April for tomatoes.

This was very helpful; especially the information regarding watering. When you transplant, do you ever put them directly in the ground or do you always put them in a small container?
@youthformonarchs
@youthformonarchs 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Shauna, thank you. Yes, people do sometimes plant them straight into the ground. It's just a little bit more challenging to protect them from transplant shock if they are in direct sun. You may need to protect them from the sun for a short time until they recover from the shock.

When do we start planting seeds in the jugs?
@youthformonarchs
@youthformonarchs 4 жыл бұрын
The traditional first day to start is Dec 21 on the winter solstice and you shouldn't start before then. But after that is fine. Just check your seed packets for the number of days of cold moist stratification required. As long as you have enough days to meet the cms requirement you can still winter sow. January is a great time for winter sowing perennials.
