What a great interview. I love Joyce DiDonato. I am an opera singer from the Teatro Colón. I retired many years ago, and follow every master class I get to watch on KZbin. She is a great teacher with a huge heart. People like her make this world a better place!

Around 11:00 she says her church choir didn’t respect her. That blows my mind. There’s always a naysayer here and there but with her musical gifts and kindness, an ungrateful choir is so hard to imagine. Excellent, intelligent interview. She uses the language well in conversation and lyrics.

Was searching for any & all information I could find about this truly amazing young woman's life after learning of her recent death. Had ten years of ballet myself beginning at age five, and it was my one true joy for many of the reasons she discusses here in your interview with her. Thank you for having the insight to speak with her & record this for posterity. I don't know how she ever found the strength to persevere after the atrocities she experienced in Sierra Leone at such a young age...obviously the source of her PTSD. That she was even able to discuss these after the fact must have been, to a degree, re-traumatizing. I am so happy for her that dance - ballet in particular - offered her the mental space and fortitude to move beyond such tragedies and find true joy in expressing to the world the person she was on the inside. Such beauty, grace, and intellect, not to mention the sheer determination & inspiration, are rarely ever found in a singular presence in this world! May you rest in eternal peace and love with all those who genuinely cared for you in this world, beautiful soul Michaela Mabinty DePrince. ❤🌹🧚🏻♀

I am so grateful that this interview exists. Hearing Micaela’s strength, insight and maturity, these revelations increase - if that is possible! - the awe her story inspires. Simone Biles and Antoinette Tuffs both transformed their pain into power, raising souls into hope, protecting lives from violators. But Micaela is in a class by herself. She joins Samuel Morris (Prince Kaboo, a teenage African from Liberia who came to America in 1891). In 1892 the impact of his faith and wisdom was profound, yet of the suffering that was the motivation of his spiritual power, even today the half had not been told. Those who make romances of such lives clearly do not understand the day by day, hour by hour, shock by shock experiences by which such lives are created. PRAISE GOD FOR SOULS WILLING TO GO INTO THE FURNACE! They walk and talk with God!!

Her life in this dark place is over, but her story has just begun to flood the earth with hope, joy, faith and INSPIRATION! She is reunited with her parents and her martyred teacher, I hope she can see that she emerges as a radiant dancing star now on the WORLD STAGE, speaking GIGANTIC TRUTHS TO A WORLD in the brink of total despair. Dance on, Beautiful Lady. You did not persevere in vain!! You are teaching and reaching more and more people in pain!!! Hallelujah! The Lord of the Dance triumphs!

Some of my favorite concerts in the 1980s were Gerard Schwarz's Music Today series at Merkin Hall in NYC. I remember spectacular performances of music by composers that almost no-one did then or now, or all the time in between. Birtwistle, Grainger, Druckman, Steven Albert, Leonard Rosenman, Panufnik ... Many must've been US premieres. Sometimes I'd see Babbitt or Carter in the audience. This was the early 1980s, so maybe the very beginning of Schwarz's conducting career?

Saw him conduct many times in Seattle. Brahms, Mahler, Wagner, and Tchaikovsky were staples of the rep. Wish we could have heard more of the American neo-classical composers live, eg, Piston, Creston, Diamond. Lots of really fine recordings with SSO though.

The greatest trumpet solo in an orchestral piece I have ever heard was Schwarz playing the extraordinary solo at the beginning of Carter’s Symphony of Three Orchestras under Boulez.

What a fascinating and inspiring story of Regina’s childhood! ❤️❤️❤️ I really enjoyed this whole podcast! Although I came here from the youtube search of “Renee Fleming”… And I apologize I have to say that the host is a bit ignorant about Renée Fleming’s speaking voice. She has very nice and pleasant speaking voice which I enjoy listening to as much as her singing. Probably, also professionally trained voice. I’ll try to add a few links in the next comment - in case KZbin blocks viewers’ links.
Hi Ellie, Thanks so much for listening, so glad you found your way here. Hope you'll listen to some other episodes!

It was very early in 2015 that Tine "hit a wall," as she put it, not 2017. I had a ticket to the engagement in Naples, Florida that she had to cancel, for a "medical emergency," per Artis Naples. I was worried, and more so when she did not perform for the next 5 months. Next time I saw her though, at the Cabrillo Festival in California, she looked great and She played James MacMillan's Epicleses masterfully.
