Hi, I just bought an a208 and the top was working fine until i dropped it off at the detailers. After picking the car up, I heard a clicking noise from where the windshield meets the softtop, closer to the center reading lights. when i tried opening the roof, the rear bow and the tonneau cover came up, and everything stopped working. i manually opened the roof all the way, hoping to close it the right way, but now nothing works. the button stays red and i cannot hear any motors or electronics. i cannot even manually close the roof, it seems to be stuck inside the trunk. please help. i want to get the roof closed up asap and then get around fixng the softtop. thank you in advance

Congrats on the new ride! The problem appears to be electrical, based on the clicking noise you are describing and the red light being on. For help with the electrical issue, you had best consult a CLK forum, such as mbworld.org. There are many helpful and knowledgeable folks on that forum and you will find it to be a wealth of information for anything related to your car. Meanwhile, to manually close the top, please be sure to have the pressure relief/manual actuation valve at the back of the pump open and the ignition off.

I strongly suggest you unclip the top pins while the cover is open. Doing it from within the trunk might be doable if you had hands of steel - but trying to remove them while reaching up is calculated to leave you with not much more than bleeding hands. Do not pull the pins, just remove the clips - then raise the top and lower the case cover, raise the trunk, and start trying to remove the lower clip. You can’t see it - I recommend a small extension mirror so you can see it to get the screwdriver in the right place to remove that clip.

@TopHydraulics
@TopHydraulics 21 күн бұрын
That’s most unusual. Are you sure that you are turning the wrench far enough? Be sure to turn off the ignition. If you are turning the wrench as far as it can go and if there really is some obstacle preventing the lock from opening all the way, then take the hoses off the cylinder first and try again, in case fluid flow is blocked. If that still doesn’t help, then unbolt the lock from the chassis.

The latch on the cylinders wasn't locking, so I had to manually pull them while my wife pushed the convertible top close switch, the sound that I was hearing was the convertible motor. In 2012 my son and I rebuilt the cylinders on his ‘99 SLK 230 that he bought at an auction, and he was the coolest thing his High School had seen and Michael Phelps went to his High School. I’m replacing all the cylinders on my 2000 SLK and I feel like a fraud. With all of that, this is the best resource for auto repair I’ve seen and nothing is close. I have rebuilt the top of a VW boxer and I have rebuilt the vario roof and this is a bug damn job. But with this guidance it’s like paying with a new credit card. Fantastic series. Did I miss anything as far as bleeding the system. Or is it self-bleeding by just operating a few cycles?
@TopHydraulics
@TopHydraulics Ай бұрын
The system is self bleeding as long as there is enough fluid in the pump. If you are replacing all five cylinders, then you want to install the cylinders, fill the pump, cycle the top one full cycle and refill the pump. After a few more cycles, you may need to top off the pump again. Theoretically, the fluid level should be at The Max line with the top down and at the Min line with the top up. The first time that you fill the pump with the cylinders still having air in them, it is okay to fill the pump to the Max line even with the top up. If you are replacing all cylinders, then it is okay to fill the pump to the Max line with the top up even after the top has cycled one. Later, you want to be careful not to overfill the pump.

Are the tonneau cover cylinders adjustable? My tonneau cover does not quite open far enough. The front bow hits the tonneau cover latch when opening and closing the top. The tonneau cover just needs to go up a 1/2 inch more to clear the front bow.

Observe the movement of the tonneau cover very closely: does it open up far enough at first and then come back down a little?
@GlennMilne-t6h
@GlennMilne-t6h Ай бұрын
It seems to stay open and stays in that position and doesn't sag. Over time it does because of the hydraulics let go. I can lift the tonneau another three inches by hand, to clear the latch, so it seems like the tonneau cover should lift higher when operating. I don't think the rams are adjustable but maybe the tonneau cover top can be adjusted or they might be fixed and no adjustment can be made. There is another remedy where you can adjust the two bolts behind the door pillar that angles the top down and forward, but slight adjustments as the front bow pins need to align in the holes.

@@GlennMilne-t6h There is no good reason for the pump not to open the cover all the way, unless 1) The upper limit switch on the left tonneau cylinder gets triggered prematurely, or 2) The fluid level in the pump is too low. If the reservoir (tank) on the pump has a fluid level below the MIN marker on it, then you have a leak and you have to deal with it. Very likely, that leak is from one or more of the seven hydraulic cylinders. If the reservoir is empty AND you can’t find fluid on the bottom of the black tonneau/case cover lift cylinders or around the pump, then the main leak is likely on the bottoms of the main lift cylinders. Any modern convertible top will fail at some point unless the car gets wrecked prematurely. The failure is predictable, depending on age, use and climate.
