I have watched the first season of the anime. And I agree this 100 percent! I haven't read the manga, and I quess that there's going to be character development, ( I really hope, otherwise Denji will be the second worst main character I've seen so far in any anime), but so far as the first season is over, I'm not thrilled at all

I agree with you about Denji at least for the beginning part of the anime, Denji as a character feels lackluster because of his lack of goals. In many ways Denji feels more like a side character than a protagonist. I began to understand and even like Denji more then what I did at the start of the anime, he's not one of my favorite characters in the series but towards the end of the series I understood more the role that Denji has in Chainsaw Man.

Understandable how things are about the show at surface level, but there's really a LOT more to it. Especially ep 3. Yes, Denji was talking about copping a feel. But right after that, he had the flashback with Pochita that showed how he related to Power and the feeling of losing a pet. All of the show's " fanservice " as some people are calling it isn't there just for the sake of it. It actually goes somewhere story wise and is all part of Denji's growth. The show can understandably be very polarising, but there is a reason why it got such a huge fanbase. There's a lot of subtleties to both it's story and to Denji as well with very little in terms of exposition like most shonen.

It's almost like you have no idea what the show is actually about and haven't read the manga. The show is about a kid that just wants to be loved but throughout his whole life he's been abused and used . If you watch anytime he actually gets the thing he's promised it either means nothing to him or he's so excited at positive interaction he can't even control himself and speak properly. Instead you db it down to it's bare bones and look at it skin deep get out the anime review scene

I felt the same way at first while reading the manga. But what is good is that there is more to his character especially as the story goes on. I'm 100% caught up and to summarise his character is horny but deep.

"Denji is trash", but have you considered the fact that he has been treated like trash for the most of his life? The guy had been forced to sell off his kidney, eye and testicle, while working 2 extremely dangerous jobs for the yakuza to pay off his dead father's debt, since he was like 10. Not to mention he had no parental love or any education to speak of. Hell, I was suprised he wasn't a junkie until I learned that he could barely afford bread for his meals. The only thing kept him alive and innocent was a chainsaw dog. If I heard of someone with a childhood like Denji's, I would imagine a violent, rabid junkie, compared to that image the boy's an angel. The reason why I appreciate Denji so much that you may not have seen yet (will be shown more in ep 4-5) is the fact that he treasures the little things we take for granted, like some decent food, a place to bathe and sleep, some porn mags, a girl who would hug him and let him get a bit touchy. Those are things any typical Japanese teenage boy could experience, and to adults they wouldn't even make for a happy life. But to Denji, it's heaven, and a heaven worth dying for. He's willing to follow anybody that could give him that and that's why I feel so bad for him. That's the most prominent theme of his character and will later on play into the show's, relativity. And I don't see a lot of anime characters with that kind of theme.

I heavily disagree but I still gave you a like cause you made a well produced video and you're open minded to continue with the rest of the story. There absolutely is more to Denji than the typical "I like boobs" that you see in pervy characters in anime. I think one of the most important ways in which he differs from those is that Denji never harasses women or violates consent. Even though he wants Makima's body, that's not the reason WHY she likes her, and he states as much: "Today was the first time I was treated like a normal person". I think the biggest indication in episode 3 that the show is very intentional with this, is the fact that the first time he helps Power, he does so for selfish reasons "help me and I'll let you fondle my boobs", and how does that end up? He got basically killed. But when she gets eaten and he's gonna rescue her, and he says "give me my tits back", we immediately cut to an inner monologue he has about how one time he lost Pochita, and spent all day finding him, falling asleep with him afterwards, and he ponders how awful it must've been to fall asleep not knowing where her pet was. He is definitely not just thinking about boobs, he is finally empathizing with Power, something he couldn't do before at all when they had conversations like her telling him that Pochita surely is dead. And now that his reasons aren't superficial, the outcome will be different. You can read this far into every sexual interaction that happens in Chainsaw man, it's definitely not a fanservice or pervy type of story whatsoever in my opinion, Denji's character is very intentionally written to be someone who appreciates the little things and spends most of the story discovering his own wants and needs.

@@maddmoniart I can understand that, the sexual situations and interactions will definitely put off a lot of people, but I think the author builds over certain expected tropes and archetypes. Would still enjoy seeing how your opinion evolves as the story goes, just keep in mind that the writing is intentional like I've described, and not just a superficial "boobs lol" like many other animes do. And if it helps at all, the word "t*ts" is a subtitles interpretation, he literally says "ore no mune e kaese", and 'mune' means literally "breasts", it's not really a crass word like "t*ts" would be lol
@dark_rit
@dark_rit 2 жыл бұрын
@@Ram-mu7kl Yeah to expand on that mune is the proper word whereas a word like oppai would be considered slang. Denjiro on surface level looks like an idiot indeed, but he has also been treated as less than human for almost his entire life leading to some weird things developmentally.

Don’t worry, it’ll get better. He’s 16 years old so it’s understandable he’d think about these things a lot. 😂Also come on, for guys what Denji’s going through is something that all guys have went through in one way shape or form. It’s just more blatantly and more extreme because of his lack of contact with people. Women especially. His character is actually much more in-depth than you think. Fujimoto’s subtlety with these things is amazing and it’s not spoon fed to you like other Shonen.

Makima does it to manipulate him, Himeno does it because she has some screw loose, Power does it because Meowy was on the line. Yes it's pretty disturbing for Makima and Himeno, but with Power I can put it aside lol. And Kobeni doesn't do it so not every SINGLE female.
