Just recently came across your channel and really interesting. I'm looking to experiment in old school voice synthesis and have got the SC-01 chip and looking to breadboard it out to experiment with. Where do you suggest to get details on just creating an onboard system, perhaps creating an EPROM with the needed data onboard.

Really enjoyed the video (like every video of yours). It seems clear you still need to really know the hardware and the language well yourself when using something like this. I don't see this completely eliminating humans anytime soon. And of course we should still be concerned where these AIs are getting their training data in the first place.

One thing about an LLM is that it will state falsehoods with absolute certainty. I asked three LLMs (GPT-4o, Gemini, and Claude) who wrote the Land of Devastation BBS game for example and all three insisted it was someone who was not me. A bit of RAG could probably fix it, but only in the case you're building a bot for a specific subject matter. Eventually the models will get bigger and/or more LLMs (like gemini-search) will start incorporating web results automatically. On the other hand, you also have the issue of them ingesting training data that people might not want ingested, for copyright or other concerns. I wonder what it will look like in a year.

You are aware of that there are locally running LLM's right? No internet required... just download a model from your favorite LLM interface (I use GPT4ALL)

I tried getting ChatGPT3 to write assembly code for M6809 and HD6309 (in native mode), and it was an interesting source of ideas, but it hallucinated nonexistent instructions and registers! I tried to get it to output music for Yamaha YMF262 FM synth, and it was a similar story.

I did get Claude to generate some 8008 and TMS9900 assembly. It did invent a few nonexistent instructions on the 8008, but you can usually point out that the instruction doesn't exist and it'll go fix it. It does make me wonder if you could take the output of the LLM, assemble it, and feed the error messages back into the LLM and have it automatically correct. This would at least lead to correct syntax, if not necessarily correct behavior. Anyhow, the code generation LLMs do seem better now then they were last time I looked.

Do you think that the amount of effort of guidance to the AI worth as opposed to coding it? I'm genuinely curious. Edit: 18:16, you answered my question. Thank you.

I did feel like I got a better payoff having it generate assembly language for me -- in this case the output is longer and more mechanical and I felt like the time savings was increasing. It was also the case that with assembly, when it makes a mistake (like inventing an instruction that doesn't exist), pointing out the mistake will lead it to correct all of its mistakes at once. The models are probably also better trained with more modern languages, such as Python or Go, where I would expect it to do a better job.

this sums up my experience with AI and generating code. I admit it might produce some interesting base, I don't want to spend time asking it to fix it, I can do it myself quicker. Great video though!

I really want to see AI port programs to different platforms. Or, at the very least, port to semi-compatible systems where the mapping is different. For example, taking disassembled code from an Atari 8-Bit game and “transporting” it to the Atari 5200. Maybe fitting a larger game into a different ROM scheme that supports higher capacity cartridges. Or, more exotically, cleaning up and reducing the size of the old code. And that’s even before moving onto requesting the AI to port the code to a different platform that would have different audio and video chips, or even different CPU architectures. What a trip that would be.
@smbakeryt

Oh it can do that. After the demo in the video, I told claude "Convert this to TMS9900 assembly" and it did what appears to be a reasonable job of it. Then I told it to "Convert it to 8008 (not 8080) assembly", and it did that too, though I had to instruct it to make several corrections. I haven't verified that either of the two assembly programs work, but they look reasonable.

I have an AIM-65 in it's original cardboard box with a bunch of original manuals and guides but no chassis. I'd love to test it someday but the PCB looks really crusty on the back so I think it would be a good idea to go over it completely before attempting to power it. Very cool to see what the machine could be capable of, thanks!

Wow what a blast from the past. I had a couple of these chips from Radio Shack, and built the thing on a perf board (all those wires!!) and it worked! I played with it for years. Now here's the kick: when Radio Shack started to add a ton of stuff to "clearance" (beginning to go out of bussiness) they had a bin in the store full of stuff. Including a bunch of the speech chips, marked down as a buck apiece! I freaked out and bought six of them (all they had). There were a couple of other stores in town (Lansing MI) who had some too. Over the years I kept them (think I had ten or so - no really) but during a move had to get rid of an entire workshop of parts, tools, Etc. You really can't take it with you scenario. That was more than 30 years ago (or so) and now they are very hard to find. I have seen a few on Ebay for - - $50.00 to 75.00 bucks. Oh if I had kept them. thanks for the very, very inspiring video!

Could you please please please please please please please go to Google and tell them about their TTS because it freaking sucks! I'm sorry but it does and the reason why I'm saying this here is because you brought up a good point you talked about inflection. Today synthesizers don't really have that. Not really. Especially Google TTS. It's uncalled for they could make it have more inflection it doesn't even acknowledge question marks. I am blind myself so I use text to speech everyday of my life. And I can't stand Google TTS because it's not expressive enough. I'll use it for basic things, but I don't like it. Also that sounds like a synthesizer I heard called keynote gold. Probably because that's probably what it's based off of. Anyway I'm totally subscribing to your channel, thank you so much. This is awesome.

If Magnetic bubble memory modules are impossible to find, MRAM (magnetoresistive RAM) memory chips are also a good alternative for that storage option, which is a bit easier to interface with in pretty much all older computers with the parallel version of MRAM chip, compared to the bubble memory modules (you can technically get away with doing brain-dead simple logics for that bubble memory module as long as you stick with the restrictions listed in the datasheets). I already grabbed 32 kilobytes parallel MRAM chip along with the parallel SRAM memory for total of 64 kilobytes that a Z80 CPU can directly access with little logics for my own DIY computer basically for fun (I decided to make it similar to IMSAI 8080 computer by functionality viewpoint, mostly for educational experience). Be warned, though, higher capacity MRAM chips (beyond 32 - 128 Kilobytes) tend to be quite expensive - it's immortality is kinda worth it though (it got crazy rewrite endurance compared to flash chips).

Hey! Thanks for this video. I tried following the same procedure with a digital optic cable that I've brought through the walls from the TV. I have light in the end that I made, but I can't get any signal to my dac. Using another store bought cable (not brought through the walls) I get signal with the same setup (TV to DAC). Do you know if the cable could be broken even though strong light is still coming through?

I was 26 back in 1982, working full time as a processing Equipment Maintenance Technician for GTE uCircuits in Tempe, Arizona. We were making early video game ROMs, Static 2114 static RAMs and Mil Spec 65C10 uProcessors chips on 4" Si wafers. I bought the Digitalker chipset complete with both of the ROM sets from a local electronics distributor called Circuit Specialists that's still in existence in Tempe, AZ and still selling electronic components online. I built a WireWraped perf board for all of the devices including audio devices. I first interfaced the Digitalker to a Timex-Sinclair ZX81 computer then later interfaced it to a Commodore Vic-20 then Commodore 64. I also built a Wire Wrap card for a pair of Intel 8255 chips so I could interface A to D and D to A converters to the C-64. What fun I had with the Digitalker. An interesting thing is that there were many disallowed addresses of non-usable words that you could send to the controller chip then toggle the speak command. The Digitalker would then speak in a sort of "Martian" language. For simple video games I made it say, "Attention Operator! This is the Space Intruder. Please select entry".

Hi, I saw your video and I fell in love with it. On Sunday I bought a trunk with thousands of components at a flea market, I understood that there was something good in the middle. in fact I managed to find different versions of the 8041, 8085, 8088, 8086, ram, rom, eeprom, plus hundreds of TTLs as well as thousands of transistors, capacitors, .... etc. I wanted to know if you could help me choose the best versions of components and build a computer from scratch. It has always been a passion of mine. I hope you can help me, thanks...
