Never owned the 358win but had a Savage 99 308win. I really wish Browning made the BLR in 338 Federal and Marlin brought back the 338 Marlin Xpress. One can wish.

It's odd that I should see this video. Today, I wrote to Savage Arms about the return of the 99. In that, I stated that although both winchester and marlin serve their purpose, they lack the beauty and usefulness of the 1899/99 rifles. I would like to see them come back with the same great quality.

I’m not so sure it should be used past 200-250 yards to be called a brush gun. That’s a very long shot through trees or any kind of brush. It’s a great bear and moose, some cases elk round. Some hunters want bigger holes in and out , bone breaking if possible. The 358 is over kill for a White tail but, like I always say, to each their own. That’s what great about our hunting, choices, choices, choices.👍🇺🇸✌🏻🙏🏽👏

The Model 99 was typically the most expensive American made rifle in the woods, early in the 20th Century. I own a Savage 99 and have shot and handloaded for a Browning BLR and a Winchester 88, but I have not seen or shot a Sako Finnbear, which might be the best of then all. Removing the buttstock, I have read that the trigger can be tuned to about 3 pounds, but I would like to hear if any fans have had success with improving the trigger.

I have the chance to buy a 1923,1925 and 1938 savage 1899 rifles this weekend ...yet I know nothing about these but spending some time today to learn ...the 1923 is 303sav..the 1925 is 300sav and the 1938 is in 250-3000 ..all 3 in very outstanding condition and all 3 are takedown models...I am a wanna be gunsmith and avid reloader so if I can find cases for the 250 reloading wont be a issue ...any idea what I should offer for these? any info on if any of them are more desirable etc I would very much appreciate it

I knew nothing about the .284 Win until I started to study the Model 88 for purchase. I wanted it in .308 because I have a lot of brass and powder for it. If you're interested in the Model 88 you're going to run into the .284, so I started to study the ballistics. It is quite a nice round. Like Blackie 1 0f 4 stated, maybe it is time for gun guys to bring back the .284 along with the .35 Rem Mag, another and actually first short magnum. For the .350 Rem Mag, Remingtgon just didn't kow how to build a nice rifle around the cartridge. The Model 600 Rem had that barrel rib and shark fin front sight that looked rather contrived and silly. Ballistically, the .350 Rem mag has not been loaded properly by any factory ammo maker. It truly shines when reloaded properly.

You have an awesome collection, I recently picked up my first 1899 recently not knowing much about them when I bought it. it is a 1910 model in 303 Sav. with a half hexagon barrel and its wearing a lyman alaskan scope using the open sight cuts to mount the rather odd rings. I hope to someday fire it and enjoy it before moving on to other things.

Marlin also made a rifle in the 356win. I own both the Marlin and Winchester in 356. With Speer 180 or 220gr bullets it’s a lethal 300yd whitetail rifle.

I just purchased a 22 hi power randomly not really know what it is to help a family member. I believe is a take down. Quick google search of the serial looks like it was manufactured in 1930. It’s been fun last few days nerding out on the history of these gun.

Hey Leverbolt76, which caliber do you think is better in this rifle, the .300 Savage, or the ..308? Also, can these triggers be improved upon by a gunsmith?

Looks like Browning is now dropping the .358 Winchester from the cartridges available for the BLR - the Browning Lever-action Rifle. Glad I got mine when I did. The .358 is now listed as "no longer in production" for each model BLR in the new online catalog.

Guns are special. I have many Savage firearms. My grandfather bought a spanking new Savage model 745 in the 1940’s and wore it out. I have two of them now. Also a MKII .22, a 93R17 and two Savage Axis 22-250 and 25-06. I love restoring firearms and working on them.

I don’t wish to be picky I am just trying to help. I worked in the aerospace industry for 30 years and it was my responsibility to teach employees how to use torque wrenches and measuring equipment. If you torque a fastener more than once it places an unknown torque value on that fastener. It’s always best to get the fastener snug before torque. Also removing fasteners with a torque wrench will damage it. Just my anal two cents. I have the Savage Axis 25-06 and love it. I put a Rifle Basix trigger on it and JB welded the removable trigger guard housing along with some JB weld in the wrist section of the stock. Most recently bought a forearm stiffening kit. Loving the videos and the upgrades. Keep them coming!

Hey there, love the video and I was on board all the way up to doing away with walnut stock and adding threaded barrels. I’m old school and all about steel and wood which is a true hunting rifle. I hate that these companies are going to plastic. If Savage brought back the 99 in wood and steal I would order it tomorrow.

Love the 35's. 358 win, 35 Whelen...No point talking about 400 yards....You taking it beyond what its designed for. You missed your mark. Great caliber for inside 250 yards here in the southeast. I do like whelen a little better. But be careful comparing calibers with different ballistic coefficient.

Nedner 257 Roberts was based on the 7×57 German cartridge. The 25-06 is based on a 30-06 cartridge necked down to a 25 diameter.

Great video. I would hate to see what it would cost to manufacture a 99 nowadays. Had a brand new .358, a .300 and a .250. Foolishly sold them and have gone without for over ten years until this weekend when I picked up a takedown in .303. Forgot what great rifles they are. Will try to get my moose and deer this year with this latest acquisition.
