To answer the question for how to test for 1000 years: In electronics, reliability is tested in an accelerated way. Unlike software reliability, electronics can be tested by using tests called HALT and ALT tests. These tests are very interesting and meticulously designed. So, the most simple way of testing is that if I know the kind of conditions that the device will go through, I can accelerate those conditions. For example, (the most simple of course) if we assume that the device is going to work from 0°c to 50°c, we make the device run at 70-100°c to an extent where we don't damage the device by the temperature but, we sort of degrade it faster. Then, we can use binomial distributions (funny maths) to calculate a lifetime. This lifetime isn't really a "real" lifetime but, we can use these numbers with high confidence as there are tests which do reproduce those numbers in real life as this kind of statistical inference is well proved.
