Struggle with Jefferson. No nation has the right to impose their will on another, as he imposed European control over the indigenous. All men are created free as he held and did not free his slaves. And he, by our standards, had carnal knowledge of a 14 year Sallie Hemings without consent. He wrote great words but lived cruel, violent and hypocritical life.

I agree. The fact that is some letters he recognise that slavery was wrong, but he didn't really try to free his slaves, maybe it's worse than not recognising slavery as wrong

At the time of its release, I remember seeing negative reviews on the series. Now that I've had a chance to watch it, I'm wondering what exactly was the problem?

I love how nonchalantly Jefferson sits in his chair as Adams speaks about the DoI, as if he hadn't just written this immensely important document. Great directing.

The difference was that Alexander was only a maniac warrior ok, and not some hate groupist or genocidal maniac like Hitler was. Alexander never committed genocide ok, the only thing he ever did, was war. The enemy also killed his people, when he and his people had killed them. And he had nothing against Persians, or Egyptians, or Indians, or anyone else ok, in fact he actually respected them after he conquered their land(by that I mean that he never exactly tyrannized or abused them). Alexander cared about conquer, and glory, and his empire. He cared to unify all countries and rule over the world, unless he needs to fight a war to get his victory in it and win, he never even did anything wrong or killed anyone. But Hitler actually hated an entire race of people, he just wanted to kill for the sake of killing, and not to gain glory.

Even two progressive intellectuals can still disagree about the Constitution and issues about free speech. Love it. It’s actually a difficult question at hand-the least educated and most vocal among us can sway others to their cause. Just look at people like Trump or Rogan, etc. They push lies, hoaxes, misinformation and conspiracy theories that others pick up on and believe. Just look at how they made the pandemic worse as they helped the least educated Americans basically forget about basic germ theory of disease. Free speech combined with popular individuals allowed just a few people popularize the ideas of not washing your hands more, not social distance more, not wear a mask every time you leave the house, not get a safe and effective vaccine, etc… and what happened? We had the worst pandemic in a century. Just like what happened with Trump losing a free and fair election-free speech combined with popular and poorly educated citizens pushing the idea that the election was stolen, even though no evidence existed to back up the claims. This then led to an actual POTUS committing sedition when asking his supporters to commit insurrection with an attempted coup d’état against the U.S. constitution. Point being-free speech is such a radically important concept and issue in a democracy. Yet, it also can destroy democracy itself-particularly when you combine that free speech with freedom of the press, technology, and when you have large amounts of citizens who’re poorly educated. It’s a very difficult issue to manage.

I love these series, I just purchased all the episodes. Jefferson is one of my favorite Founding Fathers, he was a genius ahead of his time. Actor Stephen Dilane played him brilliantly, Jefferson would be amazed himself.
