I am sorry to hear what you went through, and it's commendable how you handled it. However I disagree with the children should realize part. Marrying Mr. Right is not a pleasure, it's a choice. If you were forced into the marriage by your family, at least families intervene in this case. But if you willingly chose to be in a relationship and marry him without knowing his true nature, if you chose to marry someone again without having enough financial stability, and dragged your child into having a hostile fatherly figure, then all of this is entirely on you. Children shouldn't have to suffer because of parent's poor decisions.

The first time he hit me, I started planning our escape, and when I saw the chance, I picked up my daughter and I ran with her. I learned how to shut down all my emotions, and I was blessed with a strong survivor instinct and a strong protective and maternal instinct. I just kept saying to myself that the next day could be the day that we escaped, and then the day came. I could, and can show emotions to my daughter and granddaughters, but I can still shut them off too with anyone else, and it's been over 30 years, and I still look over my shoulder, and I can't have a closet door open, because I hid in a closet with my daughter while looking for a weapon, when our monster was coming after us. I took beatings that were meant for her, and I'd do it all over again. I put on makeup to hide the bruises, but he'd still would accuse me of being a whore.
