Here's a scary zombie Scarecrow song I wrote to the tune of If I Only Had a Brain. Enjoy! As a corpse who's resurrected, My palate's unrespected. Can't thrive on corn or grain. But your gland pituitary Would sure make my taste buds merry If I only ate your brain. I would love to chew a lotta' Medulla Oblongata With sour cream or plain. Call it mind over platter I would savor your gray matter If I only ate your brain. Oh, I would love to try The meat packed in your head. It's a fate I tend to think that you would dread To be a feast for the undead. I would still be dead and rotted, My skin all mold bespotted, My guts all full of pain. But my face I'd be feedin' While your open skull was bleedin' If I only ate your brain.

Feel like the biggest shortcoming for Scarecrow across the years has to do with the inconsistency of the character's design. I mean even in Batman The Animated Series, which is known for distilling Batman characters into their arguably most iconic/zeitgeisty forms in both pathos & aesthetic, Scarecrow has a new design every time he appears in that series. The idea of Scarecrow has developed to the point of iconic Batman villain, but the aesthetic has yet to solidify. Which...it took until Darwyn Cooke for Catwoman, so maybe Scarecrow is just a Dan Mora drawing away.

This is when they were directly ripping off The Shadow. Although I'm not sure if Margo ever got to fiancé. In every program I've listened to, she's always been the partner/girlfriend.

Bruce sets off the bomb while the Party Animals are trying to escape. Alfred says something like "If you were a real tactician, you would have set a trap for those fleeing" He then realizes that Bruce does in fact set a trap. Bruce is the one who detonates the bomb under the stairs.

Looking back at the book, that definitely makes more sense with the Alfred caption box. I think I was confused because the hand pressing the button is in front of a solid blue background and so is Alfred at the bottom of the page. I do question whether Batman could guarantee the explosion was non-lethal... but that's just comics I suppose.

OMG. The Solomon Grundys ORIGINAL nursery rhyme was about the DECADES of his LIFE. Sheesh. Millennials..! Phhfftt..! WORSE analogy EVER..!!!!!

That’s an interesting perspective! Given that the average life expectancy in the late 19th century was in the 40s, and earlier in the century was in the late 30s, the interpretation as decades seems quite ambitious! The average life expectancy reached 70 in the 1960s, so that interpretation would make a lot of sense to children of the mid 20th century.

Another entertaining episode. Here are a few of my observations: Because I'm more of a silver/bronze-age geek, I had no idea that Solomon Grundy is now associated (mostly) with Batman -- Clearly, I have some catching up to do. I probably became aware of Grundy in some 1960's JLA/JSA crossover, or maybe Showcase #55 (1965 - a Dr. Fate/Hourman team-up against Grundy). Regarding earliest comic book swamp creatures: I'd vote for The Heap, who debuted as a "hero" (a la Swamp Thing or Man Thing) in Hillman Comics' Air Fighter Comics #3 (cover dated Dec. 1942 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heap_(comics) ) -- a couple years after Sturgeon's "It", which was no doubt an influence, but a couple years before Solomn Grundy's first appearance. Finally, you often ask about folk's first recollection of Batman -- so here's mine: Superman was my gateway character, and I started reading his books with issue 142 (Jan. 1961). Although my love of Supes may have led me to Batman in a World's Finest book, I have no recollection of that. So officially, the two earliest Batman books I remember are Detective 307 (Sept '62), featuring "Alpha, the Experimental Man -- a one-off character. (I still own this now-coverless, beat-up book). Shortly after that, I also bought Detective 311 (the first appearance of silver age Cat-Man -- and this book is long gone...). I also remember having Batman 156 (June '63), "Robin Dies At Dawn." Keep your cowls dry, and your capes flying -- Bill

Given that my introduction to Solomon Grundy was Super Friends I had assumed he was a Superman villain for years. No idea if any of it's correct but I remember him & Superman fighting in those cartoons. It was so implanted that I thought, while cool, it was weird to see him in Arkham City. And now I know he's an old GL villain & everyone was wrong.

There is a great episode of the 2004 The Batman cartoon called Grundy's Night that I've always enjoyed. There's a bit of a twist ending, but it's still a wonderful entry for Grundy.

I decided to look at train accidents in 1940 knowing how much Finger likes, refrence materials. There were two in America in 1940 pre Scott's debut. One in Alamo Texas and one in Little falls New york on Aprill 19th. There was the Doodlebug trainwreck which took place just after the issue on July 31st. None of them involved bridges that I could tell.

I imagine the reason Solomon Grundy showed up in The Long Halloween is because Alan Scott’s primary base of operations was Gotham city, and in Post-Crisis continuity he is considered to be Gotham‘s first superhero. If you get the trade paperback of Batman: The Man Who Laughs by Ed Brubaker there is a story collected in it called “Made of Wood” where Batman teams up with Alan Scott and at the end you find out that Green Lantern was Thomas Wayne’s childhood hero, so although he won’t admit it, the whole experience is very exciting for Bruce

Great job as always, it's really interesting to hear the inspirations behind these characters. As for Solomon Grundy i never appreciated the idea of considering him a Batman villain: as pointed out in this video too at the end of the day the reason he is considered a Batman's villain is due more of his appearances in The Long Halloween, Dark Victory and Arkham City and that's pretty much it. Besides if i want to read a story about Batman fighting an animalistic brute with a tragic backstory that lives in the sewers i can always pick a comic with Killer Croc. Solomon Grundy works best when he wanders around the DC universe, fighting all kinds of heroes. I guess Grundy simply suffers the same fate of villains like Killer Frost or Chemo: villains that have become way more popular than their respective heroes therefore are put against everyone.

Another fun episode. A few things that have more to do with me than the podcast... First, I truly feel honored to be referred to as a "core" listener and to hear so may of my comments noted. It makes me think back to reading letter columns and seeing letters from certain fans who always had a letter-or-two printed every month (like Mark Evanier or Irene Vartanoff). Re: The Marx Brothers: So as I was driving in my car and listening to this episode, you mentioned my comment about Adolph (Harpo) Marx (I think I previously mentioned that he changed his name to Arthur), you got some info incorrect, and I thought, "Well, guess I have to correct them..." but someone beat me to it in real time. But, you're not "Marx Lessons, Marx Brothers' History" so I understood. But briefly, The Brothers were stars in Vaudeville and stage and made the move to films in 1929. They made films until the mid-50s. There were five brothers, in order of age (oldest to youngest) with the stage names of Chico, Harpo, Groucho, Gummo and Zeppo. Gummo left the act before films, so I have no idea what he was like, persona-wise. Zeppo left after five films and was typically the straight man and romantic lead. Chico was a dialect comic and affected an Italian immigrant dialect and persona. Groucho was a fast-talking con-man(the glasses with the nose, eyebows and moustache are often referred to as Groucho glasses). Finally, Harpo never spoke, pantomimed, and was as close as you could come to a cartoon character in a live action film. They're best films are pure slapstick anarchy. I highly recommend taking a look at Duck Soup (maybe the funniest film ever made), Monkey Business (not the one with Cary Grant) and Horsefeathers. OK -- way to much on non-Batman related stuff, so I'll close this comment. Keep up the great work.

I enjoyed dawn of dc. I picked up 4 dc titles. Good comics, but DC gave up? In less than a year they are doing an entire upheaval of the dc universe? They need to have faith in their own comics. Just make comics with good art and writing. Stop with the constant events! At least the titles i have subbed to are NOT starting over with new #1s. Theres plenty of good Batman series. They are always coming out. Batman Offworld, Batman Dark Age, Batman the Barbarian, Dark Knights, on and on....Worlds Finest. There's no shorts of good Batman stories with good art. So I'm not buying absolute batman.

Loved you guys from the very first episode. I fall into the same category as you guys of being just having casual knowledge while loving the character. Really nice to have people do research of their own instead of just reading off of Wikipedia and claiming that it's canon. An Overcast ad was my in, just so you know.

I’m actually kinda hyped for this book. At first I wasnt a fan of the way Batman looked but hearing the behind the scenes details and seeing Batman in action in the preview panels, I like how this seems to be a grounded Batman and Synder saying he wants this to be a caped Crusader for a new age and fan.

What's interesting is that Dark Knights Metal was a limited event. Based on the meme that Batman can beat anyone with prep time. What happened was the batman that laughs is so interesting. They had to extend the event. Which eventually got out of hand, turning into a soft reboot. Even then, it was still handled better than Futures End.
