00:09 - Bilbao is not the capital of the basque country

01:29 There's a Bidegorri on your left. Bidegorri in Basque means literally "red track", because its colour, and is for exclusive use by biking, skates, scooters... In our little Bilbao there are almost 50 km of bicycle lanes: Barcelona has about 200 but with a population x 5, and Madrid multiplies our population x 9.5 and has 195 km. Not so bad, right? In Bilbao, as a general criterion, bicycles, electric scooters and any other vehicles are not allowed on the pavements, with the exception made for children. The fine for cycling on the pavement and pedestrian areas is 200 euros. You've been lucky. Come back soon, I hope you'll enjoy the city in that short trip. Trivia: In 1983 Bilbao suffered a flood; 500 litres of rain per square meters in just one day. In areas of the Old Town, the water reached a height of almost five metres (15 feet). In some parts of the Old Town there are plaques marking the level reached by the water. Others tell the origin of the names of the medieval streets. Do you know that Euskara/Basque is the oldest language in Europe?

I just absolutely love these. What an amazing place! (The music works really well with this - nothing cheesy about it!) Considering all the snow that had to be plowed to clear the road, I'm stunned at few potholes I saw - and you commented the road was in good shape. Civil engineers in America need to go there and figure that out. Thanks for posting yet another lovely journey!
@ComeRideWithMe-js5gc

Maybe the secret with the potholes is the fact these passes close more than half the year, protected under that thick blanket of snow. It might be a different story if they were ploughing to keep them open 365. I'm always struck how the Alps are a working place, with big population centres and all sorts of industries from hydro to agribusiness to tourism. They do a great job managing the extreme environment. We saw that In arctic Norway too, where the infrastructure is seamless. I guess it takes a fair bit of public investment.

Wow! So, so beautiful! Things were not always so violent or confrontational in those days. They had many, many peaceful days of fishing, farming, adherence to and celebration of their faith. But most of the history books covering the period 900 - 1800 emphasizes struggle, war, disputes over who swears fielty to whom, disease, and other aspects of that life - but very little about what life was like in the absence of those stresses. Too much emphasis on monarchs, lords, ladies, knights, etc., - not enough (probably because it wasn't recorded) on Ma and Pa and the youngins. With these videos, especially this one, I can easily imagine how lovely life might have been, save for the the occassional rascal asking for a shave.

Initially the Vikings were raiders and were a very really threat, but soon enough they came as settlers and assimilated with the locals. In the Middle Ages, every aspect of island life would have been dominated by the Abbey, but that came to an abrupt end when Henry VIII broke with Rome and dissolved every monastery in the land. I guess the point of mentioning the 1715 rebellion was how comical, almost Keystone Cop, the whole situation was. Like you suggest, I guess the island provided a terrific refuge, well provisioned by land and sea, for monks, scholars, fishing folk, farmers and families.

Ha, the squiggly lines warn drivers they're coming up to a pedestrian crossing. The property boom brought a lot of new building to Belfast but I'm not sure all the office and retail space is full to capacity these days. But it's all preferable to armoured cars and nervous, heavily armed troops on the streets. These are largely neutral areas near the centre. @@davidstuart4489 Yes, there's no dispute that a large proportion of wealthy people play tax where they live and earn, and give away a great deal more besides. Just to get back to your point about safe cities, I wouldn't feel completely relaxed walking the streets of Abuja. Is it a coincidence that the late dictator of Nigeria, Abacha, amassed a personal fortune of $3-5biilion during his time in power, and that most of that was stashed away in Swiss and Liechtensteiner banks (and some in the UK too). That money would help in a small way to make Nigeria a better place to live. This is the pattern in many African countries. Yet when sub-Saharan Africans risk their lives crossing the Channel in rubber dinghies, seeking a better life, the vice chairman of our governing party says in an interview last week, "They can f*** off back to Africa".
