You certainly make me less scared to visit Australia knowing that these spiders are very unlikely to be found inside is a relief! Still very scared to the Sydney funnel web spiders just existing in the city of Sydney though....
@ausgeo3 күн бұрын
You're very unlikely to run into them - the idea of a funnel web spider is just that: that they like resting out of the way. So much like your average Sydneysider, you'd be very unlikely to come across one! 😊🧡

I live on a cattle property and see Kookaburras everywhere here. I’ve recently come across a mostly BLACK kookaburra which I was so unsure of what kind of bird it was to begin with… had me super confused haha how common are black/ mostly black Kookaburras? I have now noticed at least 2 possibly 3 Black/mostly Black that I’m assuming are probably from the same linage or family…. Happy to provide photos for proof if needed

Obviously being an Aussie and living in rural areas I have seen hundreds of huntsman spiders. but I actually saw a Huntsman as big as this one and I am certain it was NOT this particular sub-species. It looked just like all the other local ones except it somehow got way biger than all the others. I was living in Drysdale, Victoria (near Geelong on the Bellarine Peninsula.) I got a knock on the door, it was my neighbor. She wanted me to come and "Kill a Giant Huntsman in her bedroom" I was thinking "Yeah, yeah, giant my bum" I'd heard so many people call many ordinary Huntsman "Giant" But this one truly was. Sadly, I did kill it and I absolutely should not have. I should have tried to secure or capture it and get it to an entomologist at a University because this thing was the truly largest Huntsman I have ever seen in my 50 years on this earth. This was about 15 years ago. I have not seen one this big ever since. I now live near the Murray River in the Southern Riverina District of NSW. We get at an average of 2 Hunstman per week inside the house. with a massive variety of sizes and sub-species. some are banded, some are like silvery gray, and some our brown. some are alone, some are in groups of 5 or more. Some are quite aggressive (biting down on the surface they are on) others barely move when you spray them. My wife is terrified of them ansd so I only do kill those in the house. I never, ever kill outdoor spiders and I never ever kill brown house spiders (the black ones lol) I really like that coz once they find a spot in your house, they dont move and so you dont need to worry about them so much. But none compare to that giant Huntsman in Drysdale. it was easily and I mean easily 20cm, possibly a tiny bit more.

This looks like the spider that I saw on my balcony that made me shut down. I've never had that reaction before but my husband had to shuffle me inside where I couldn't speak for about an hour. I don't hate spiders, I don't want anyone to hurt them. Being arachnophobic really sucks.

I lived in the Victorian bush most of my life, that is a small one they get as big as a dinner plate/ They live under tha bark of mountain ash and bluegum trees in huge colonies. Also they are the least painful bite from a huntsman, the smaller orange ones hurt most.
@ausgeo12 күн бұрын
They certainly can get even bigger in size! 🧡

Lovely spider, though love to know how large it is compared to a Goliath spider ❤️
@ausgeo12 күн бұрын
So it seems the goliath gets up to 28 centimetres (11 inches), while the green-bellied huntsman can get up to around 20 centimetres (7.9 inches). Both pretty imposing!

I've seen a few the size of a dinner plate growing up. I remember it clearly as the bugger jumped on to my brothers dinner plate scared the living hell out of everyone. Another time i was woken up by partners screams at 2am only to see a giant one sitting above the bed.

They can get surprisingly large... and certainly lead to a surprise! 😂
