I'm a guy who's the firstborn child of my mom and dad, and my dad loves me as much as my mom did until her death. My dad loves me and my younger sister equally. Our mom died 11 years ago in January of 2013. I was almost 18. She was 38 when she died. She was a pretty woman ,but she had an awful addiction to cigarettes. Nothing could get her to stop smoking. She, of course, loved us but wouldn't stop smoking. I'm 28 years old, and I never will smoke, drink, or do illegal drugs. I choose to take good care of myself for the most part. Of course, I love my mom and dad and sister equally, too. I can't stand smoking or drinking. But I'm still thankful to God for still having my dad, my old man. My old man has been both a good and bad influence on us for foul language and wasting money. But he's also been a good influence on us by loving us and teaching us what he knows about God and stuff.

My old man is a garbage pile. Never did a thing for me but pushed me off on my grandparents. That was after my mother pushed me off onto my father.

Wow, what a weekend! Our 45th class reunion -- seeing former classmates, telling stories, listening to The 70's Band from Omaha. Saturday night we attended the Alumni Banquet -- best banquet meal we've ever had -- and then the alumni street dance with The 70's Band again. Sunday was the alumni golf tournament. Our team ended up 2nd but I found some game again and got to hang with my son and his friends. But here I am Monday evening, alone, enjoying the grounds of Gooshaven and welling up with sentiment and nostalgia. I'm missing my dad. I don't miss my day every day like some people do. I guess life goes on and it gets busy. Oh, from time to time a memory or experience will flood my mind but it's usually around certain times I really, really miss him. Like Father's Day a couple of weeks ago, and a couple of days ago with alumni and what would have been his 98th birthday. Good dads are everything. A lack of them is what is spiraling our society. But I was dang fortunate for one who was tough and tender when he needed to be; who taught me about everything I know in terms of skills and relationships; and conveyed to me not only good, sandhill's values but a deep, committed love that at first was difficult to express verbally but became more frequent with the years. My dad's love was expressed in his commitment to not only providing for our family but in helping us to excel in valuing others and being a good neighbor. As I was looking for my seat at the banquet Saturday night, I saw a couple from the class of 1952. I was drawn to the name tag of the elderly gentleman ... Oatman. For the next 15 minutes we talked about the Oatman family, Broken Bow, the military service, Runza which is his favorite place to eat, and so on. I was my dad, personified -- visiting with strangers, hoping to connect, hoping to add value and significance to their lives. The song personifies what I am feeling tonight and the artist is a good friend of our families. Watch it, without checking your other posts and texts, etc. Think about your dad, reminisce, laugh, cry, and if you had a good dad, thank him again in your heart of hearts whether he is alive or not. If you didn't have a good dad, and I daily interact with people who didn't because with experience I can read it in their countenance and actions -- come to the one Father who can fill you with what you missed and allow him to heal you -- so you and your children can be whole. I am so glad for my old man. He was far from perfect, but he was the perfect dad for me. One of these days when I am gone, I pray that my son and daughter will watch a video like this and find it tears them up inside. Because if it doesn't, I didn't do my job and their heart and life will reflect it.

My dad passed back in January. He lived just long enough to see my buy my first house. He was an ordained minister that not only wed my wife and I but also my brother and his wife. He taught both of us the value of hard work and principles. He taught us both how to fix cars. Build fences, fix houses, siding, painting even gardening. But the most important lesson he taught either of us was how to be a good father.

“My son has done things I could never be more proud of, but he has also don’t things I could never be more terrified by disappointed in him for or (give me a minute I don’t use this word he said it like he was talking to an army but of one in chains) okay a Paul led by. But I love him and at least I know his’ enemies. So anything you want to talk about?” Said a father of many fathers.
