This is my biggest issue because I am relatively new to hunting and 5 years from retirement. I plan on buying property to live on and hunt on, and I can't afford to make the mistake of buying the wrong property. I just need to figure out who to trust as a relator to guide me in purchasing the right property the first time. Once I own the property, I will have a habitat consultant come out so I do not spend time and money doing the wrong things.

Facing this dilemma right now in NW Michigan. Drilled in a blend ahead of rain. Both storms missed me. Now facing some severe drought and plot failure. I do have an extended growing season bc my proximity to lake Michigan luckily. Rye to the rescue I guess.

Jake, is winter wheat an alternative to Winter rye? Any pros or cons? Winter wheat seems to be more readily available and a little less expensive. SE Wisconsin. Thanks!

Man i got some ( crossbow) herbicide, will i be good to plant in 3 weeks? It has 24d ,34% and triclopyr 16%..... Will i have a residual left? I have 41 gly but the place I'm doin is more left over woody, stemmy junk and little grass, i was going to spray today with a mix of both to set it back im putting lime down lime also and going to have it disced in a couple days to get lime in the dirt, im just doing winter wheat this yr ( mid September) to get ground in better shape for future ( mixes) when ph is in better shape! It had been ag limed about 4 yrs ago and it gets bush hogged 2 times a yr! Thanx brother, good video!❤

Not a good crop of acorns you say, likely due to off-target herbicide on the landscape. Oaks are susceptible to non-lethal doses of 2,4-D and dicamba, which can alter tree crowns and limit production.

Biggest yuck factor in consulting is having to be a salesman. State DNR (depending on state) can be a tremendous free resource for folks who just want to improve their property.
@HowtoHuntDeer
@HowtoHuntDeer 2 ай бұрын
You're right, State DNR can be a great free resource. But they simply cannot provide the level of guidance, habitat design, and reporting that a private consultant can. State DNRs aren't staffed to allow the level of service a consultant can.

@@HowtoHuntDeer You are incorrect. The PLBs in my state and my area have went above and beyond and did a full property plan... multiple maps, schedule of work, and 40 page written report. They also plan to help me burn and offered to sign me up for a learn and burn opportunity that they offer landowners.
@HowtoHuntDeer
@HowtoHuntDeer 2 ай бұрын
@@usernamehere6061 That's a very impressive level of service! Many states cannot offer that. Curious what state if you don't mind sharing? But... my comment still stands as correct. What you outlined is not close to the level of service you receive from a great habitat consultant. Not to knock the tremendous job your PLBs do, but just to say that's far less than half the work a great consultant can provide.

Could I let the winter rye up until August and just roll what's standing over my fall blend, along with spraying for weeds? I've had some failed buckwheat plantings the last few years so I'm wondering if its worth the money and time.

How do you guys feel about bare root seedlings versus trees that are established at 3 to 4 feet tall already?

There seems to be a time and a place for all different types of plantings. There are so many variables mainly revolving around the goals of the landowner that it is difficult to give a one sizes fits all answer.

Great episode! Question: I have a small parcel that backs up to large amounts of fields, timber and creeks. I have created a 1/4 acre bedding area that i will block with screening and 100 yards from 1/2 acre food plot. On the travel corridor i've placed a water hole and mock scrape as one stand location and another stand at bedding all with great access and exit. What are your thoughts on a Tony Lapratt style management strategy of breaking the 3/4 acre up into sections divided by screening to prevent fighting to hold more deer . Thanks Guys...keep up the great content!

It's difficult to say for certain without seeing the property, but typically anytime you are doing things that will influence the deer to spend more time on their feet in the daylight on your property the better off you will be. We have a small property (10 acre) design breakdown coming out soon!

Just like any timber... keep setting it back. We want the timber keep from getting mature, so cutting down some trees each year, or every few years, will keep doing this. This thicket in particular is so thick and brushy that it will not need much to stay the way it is.

Back to the question of bed size...do you cut different size areas depending on whether its for bucks or does? Im assuming the answer is yes as for doe bedding you're accomodating a family of deer and for bucks just a single deer. If that's correct, what average size are you creating for each? Secondly, it would be fun to have all the guys take a tract and each one present a plan based on just what can be gleaned from online scouting and the details gleaned from the owner consult. Obviously one of you would have the advantage of the 'boots on the ground", but its not a competition and it would be very interesting to see the different ideas and just as interesting would be the reasons why one idea might not fly due to what was learned the one who toured the property. It would also illustrate the value of having someone visit on site to get the best plan.
@whitetailpartners4624
@whitetailpartners4624 4 ай бұрын
For bed size you are correct that typically they will vary when designing for buck vs. doe bedding. On average the doe bedding areas will fall between 0.25-0.50 acres while the buck bedding could be extremely small with more focus being placed on the right location and features based on the characteristics of the property. That is a very interesting idea! We have some different things coming out for design breakdowns over the summer and we will see if we can fit something like that in!

Only problem with hunting off topographic maps is that during that magic 10 days kick in is that there are drifter bucks pulled out of there core areas searching for doe and these travel routes are there preferred routes due to experience on that property, drifters are new to those spots and are just following there noses
